  • A drug free, non-invasive method for semi-permanently blocking the return of fear memories in humans is reported in this week's Nature. The finding may have important implications for the clinical treatment of fear-related disorders.

That's correct. It's a very subtle thing to get across, which I struggled a bit with when producing this video. The difference is literally all in the timing: simply by showing this "fear reminder" a few minutes before doing normal extinction training, the reconsolidation window is opened up which allows the fear memory to be re-written.

I'm sorry you are going through that. My heart goes out to you.

how do i apply this to everyday life? what if you're not scared of yellow squares but scared of something else?

What was not mentioned in this video is that the fear memory must be the original memory (first incident). Thus, if you have a fear of driving after car accident, the car accident/driving may or may not be the fear target for erasure. It may be "I am bound to make a mistake" belief. And this may come from childhood, and one may not even remember that. Reconsolidation looks promising indeed but unfortunately I am not seeing PTSD people screaming "this is a miracle"

Eugene Kulinek I think that is not true. Fear extinction often cures other fears than the target, as long as they have the same triggers. That is why fear extinction can be done on fears from before you can remember in childhood.

And reconsolidation is the only true help for PTSD victims.

So then this wouldn't be a very helpful treatment for people who've survived something like childhood trauma that can't necessarily be remembered, or chronic trauma that doesn't stand out as a single memory but instead as a broader, more umbrella type of a memory

Lisa SAS Yes it absolutely can!
You introduce a trigger for the fear memory. Then do extinction training on different fears and anxieties you have today.
These fears "overlap", and eventually the fear memory will be gone.
Memory and fear memory are different things.
You don't need to know the original memory to trigger and work with the fear memory.

What if I don't want to know the context of the memory.say for a rape victim the context of her/his rape is not needed

We can reset this switch & begin to live. We can awaken into a world of full frontal lobe capabilities. They estimate that a large portion of the brain turns on & operates at close to 90% more frequently. Most of the time humans use 10%.. We can change all of that with a simple treatment & people would expand to a new reality. A reality of tools that will allow us to reprogram by simply turning on the frontal lobe. I have already learned this, but i am infancy PTSD, so i dont know the memory

I don’t think that erasing memories and fear memories is true at all in my opinion.

If we erase memory of fears using reconsolidated update mechanism. Do that means that we can also artificialy put memory of fears using the same method. Or in higher assumption we can also put artificial memory like how you like a person, or how you respond upon stimulus.
Maybe I misunderstand it. Please correct me If I'm wrong.

fear is important in life, no need to rid of it
