I personally like Nevermind's clean, pop-oriented production. I slightly prefer in Utero but I love Nevermind and I loved that we got what we got. Without it, and possibly without the production, there probably wouldn't be In Utero. Or at least, it wouldn't have as big as an impact. That being said, I would have loved to hear Nevermind released like this. It sounds fantastic and very grungy/grimy.
absolutely nailed steve albini’s recording/mixing style, especially with the drums. that’s always had a very distinct sound that i’ve found hard to replicate to the T, but you got it
I definitely see the difference. Nevermind is more poppy and lyrically based with those pumped up, and In Utero is more bass-y with drums out the ass and it sounds harder. I would love to see Nevermind songs "In an Incesticide Kind of Way". I love the punk sound Incesticide gives off and would love more punk from Nirvana, but sadly..
Does Incesticide really have a sound of its own? It’s a compilation of tracks from so many different sessions over years with so many different producers, different drummers, etc
jajjajajaj este tipo entendió todo, amo la canción milk it de In Utero y de tanto escucharla mas o menos se me quedó en el cerebro la calidad de sonido que tenía, el pibe hizo que esta canción literalmente suene como una de In Utero, un epico!

If you're using Logic Pro X in your DAW, there's always Flex Pitch Editing to play with the individual notes. The formant shift tool in this would probably be of some use to sort any issues with vocals, maybe even guitars.
^ Has pitched editing gotten that far advanced that formant editing sounds natural? If it's as good as everybody is saying, I'd be willing to pay top dollar, as you can apparently remove vocals from mixes and everything.
Nice version. You’ve single-handedly pointed out clear differences between audio engineers’ opinions on In Utero tracks like Steve Albini and Scott Litt’s different interpretations...
This is absolutely awesome! You definitely got talent at remixing songs dude. The fact that this is my favorite song from my favorite band makes it even better.

Aaahhhh, one of my favourite songs. I especially like the bass dimension you give in this song, I think it adds more weight to the whole combination, if you know what I mean; the guitar work is also noticeable. For some reason I think about John Bonham when listening to the drums, which I suppose is great.

I'm one of the biggest Nirvana fans on the planet, and for some reason, I just never liked In Bloom. But this version makes so much more sense to me. And btw, I think Kurt was totally right about Pennyroyal Tea being more fitted for the Nevermind sound. I would have liked it better for sure. You should do that one. I'm sure one of the biggest challenges to changing Pennyroyal tea though is re-eq'ing the guitar to be less compressed to the mid range. Nevermind had a much more scooped sound.
I am one of the biggest fans as well and I never really liked Smells like Teen Spirit. It is really fun to play on guitar but that is about it for me. Drain You, to me is the best song on Nevermind
Pretty good, I just don't like that you deleted the vocal harmonies. There are back up vocals and harmonies all OVER the place on In Utero, the difference is that that don't have chorus and "compressiony" types of crap added to it.

pissedoffporcupine8 No joke. I would kill for a mix of Nevermind that actually sounds like it fits in with their other albums. The songs are great, but it's just so over polished that I can barely listen to it these days. Which is really ridiculously sad.
Ivegotwormsinme Someone posted his video for Very Ape on the Nirvana Reddit. I was interested so I checked out TheEndOfMusic's other videos. Why, did I stumble into some secret club?
I'd love to see how this mix sounds with the AI-covered vocals I made with a model I trained from the Pachyderm session vocals! It de-doubletracks them and makes them around a LOT more raw.
Calebo103 that doesn't sound stupid at all. Imagine hearing Swap Meat or maybe Floyd the Barber in either nevermind style or in utero style. I bet it would sound amazing.
+RustyWoud Not sure :(. I've run across a lot of nevermind stem files, but not too many for bleach of early cuts. Not too sure where one could get those

This is part of the demo they recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, WI in 1990. This is before Dave joined the band, but this demo is what got them their contract with Geffin DGC. The same producer recorded this and their Nevermind album.
Found that serious Nirvana fans rarely listen to Nevermind and if they do, it's only a brief listen before they lament the "real" sound they know the band are known for.
I rarely listen to the Nevermind _album_ specifically, but I do enjoy many of their performances of those songs, especially Breed and Drain You. Edit: I find myself coming back to the album quite often. I prefer their In Utero sound and performances of that era, but the Nevermind album is actually much better than you'd think if you can just get around how it was mixed and produced.

Wow! I really LOVE this for the most part. My only constructive criticism might be that the vocals could've been mixed sans effects on the verses if at all possible, in order to further reinforce the "In Utero" vibe you were going for here. Not to mention the fade-out maybe being unnecessary. But those 2 small issues aside, I'd say this is about as close as it gets for a full-on RE-IMAGINING! 4 out of 5 stars!!!!!
after spending some time experimenting with this same sort of stuff, i will say that going from the utero style production to the cleaner nevermind type of shit is INFINITELY easier than the other way around. for anyone actually interested in trying this, it's a lot more complicated than turning up the bass on the original or whatever the hell you think it is. the way i thought about doing it was re-amping the drums & guitar, re-recording them in a much spacier room/with a darker mic & combining those new takes with the original. i feel like the best way to achieve that "50 mics around the kit" sound would be to actually put a ridiculous amount of mics around a playback of a drumkit, but i'm not sure. i can also do this with the other multitracks of nevermind floating around, so i'll get back to you fags when i'm done with it. consider this a follow-up to what this guy did, i guess? not trying to shit on his work, here, it's merely a concept that i have a very particular interest in and would like to share. oh, yeah, don't ask for come as you are/lithium, as there are no multitracks that exist. it's impossible to do it with songs that you don't have isolated tracks from, and we don't have iso tracks of quite a few.
He has used samples from the in utero mulititracks and sequenced them in into the structure of the nevermind tracks. This is not reverb or vst of the drums tracks they are for sure samlples. I wan't a break down of how he did it though because I'm a huge fan of the albini drum sound.
