  • QCX-mini by QRP Labs is one of the most popular QRP ham radio transceivers. N1MM logger is one of the most popular ham radio software. These two could pair nicely together if not one problem - the QCX and the Logger don't know which language to speak! This video is about how to make the N1MM logger and the QCX-mini transceiver communicate flawlesly, exchanging frequency and other data , and, most importante, to send CW from the N1MM logger's macros! I tonly takes one cheap and easy to make at home USB -to-TTL level cable and some grammar exercise !
    I hope this could be useful for all QRP enthusiasts who like to take part in the HF contests.

    First of all, I always like to comment (to non-native English speakers) that your English is perfect! There are few bi-lingual speakers here in the US with the possible exception of Spanish. Thanks for this very helpful information, I'm waiting for my QCX to be delivered.

    In August 2022 I purchased a USB > TTL cable from Amazon for $20: Cordable USB to TTL 3.5mm Serial Adapter Converter cable TTL-232R-5V-AJ 5V. It worked perfectly with my 20m QCX-mini and N1MM commands as noted by LY2H. N7RCS

    Hi Linas, thanks for a great video. It's amazing how the QCX works easily together with N1MM with your help! Did you try to make the QMX work with N1MM? I am trying, but not knowing N1MM well, haven't succeeded yet. Can't see the VFO, although I can change the bands.... If you have been down that path, your advice would be most appreciated!

      @@arcandide Thanks for watching Arcandide! I'm glad it was helpful. I have not tried to run the N1MM on the QMX yet. I thought, it should be quite similar to QCX, but who knows :) Thanks for drawing my attention to this, I'll let you know if I find something. 73! Linas LY2H

      @@arcandide Update. You are right, the QMX is not capable to run CW from the N1MM+ Logger, I've just tried it out on my QMX. It seems that this is a firmware limitation. The QMX is a merger of two radios- OCX-mini and QDX. Unfortunately, the CAT in QMX was inherited from the QDX and, thus, is not fully supporting the CW commands, in difference to the QCX. I saw one post on groups.io by Hans, where he confirms bringing QCX CW functionality into a QMX is on his to-do list. Let's hope for this! BTW, using the Winkey should resolve the problem, but at the cost of one more box in the backpack , though :) 73! Linas LY2H

      Hello Rudi, thanks for watching! QCX-mini is using a subset of commands as in the Kenwood TS-480, so you need to choose the TS-480 as a radio in the N1MM logger. QCX-mini’s User Manual (chapter 4.17) could be a good reading if you’d like more technical details on the hardware side, like cable connections etc., apart what is said in the video. HTH, 73! Hello, both RTS and DTR are off. (because CAT is doing everything). For the radio, "Kenwood-slow" works best for me. Speed 38400, Parity N, Data Bits 8, stop bits 1. All other fields on the right are left blank. HTH. HNY, Skol! 73! Linas LY2H

    Great videos. Do you notice any timing issues for CW using the CAT port? I am using a Winkey mini but yes, it takes a second USB port on the computer.

    • @Linas_LY2H
      @Linas_LY2H  Год назад

      Thanks Greg! And no, I’ve never experienced any timing issues running N1MM on any of my laptops, be it Windows XP on 1GB RAM machine many years ago, or 8GB RAM and Win 11 PC nowadays. Winkey is a great idea but I have yet to feel the need for it as a CW generating machine in the contest. Actualy, I have the Winkey but I only use it to generate RTTY code from the CW code for my IC-705, as the newer version I have is able to do this. On the other hand, I only have experience with the N1MM logger, may be other contest/CW logging apps create the issues you are asking about, I just don’t know :) 73! Linas LY2H

    Hello Linas, is there anything else that needs to be configured in the QCX radio? I copied the commands, but is not keying the radio. Thank you, Ed

    • @Linas_LY2H
      @Linas_LY2H  2 года назад

      Hello Ed, thanks for the messgae. There is nothing to set in the QCX itself, except that you need to configure the CAT itself, i.e., to open the Config tab in the N1MM up and make the right configuration there: the COM port, the Radio ( I chose the Kenwood-Slow, it seems like better adapted to the QCX), mark the CW window, in the Set tab -
      speed 38400 ( it's important, other speeds didn't work for me), Parity N, Databits 8, stop bits 1, DTR RTS Always off, Two Radio Protocol -None, Foot Switch - None. Radio Polling Rate -Normal. After making this setup, the logger must be able to communicate with the radio, like reading and change frequency etc, and after rewriting the Macros script, it should PTT and transmit messages. That's it on my win 10 laptop. Hope, this helps. 73! Linas LY2H

      @Linas_LY2H  2 года назад +1

      Hello, there is no need for IC-705 to change the script in the N1MM+, it works perfectly with the original script and a standart USB data cable ( the CI-V port must be used on the radio). If you have changed the script as in the video for your QCX-mini, it will NOT work with the IC-705 anymore, you'll need to revert to the original script. Hope, this helps, 73! Linas LY2H
