- In this talk, Sally Varma speaks on how she and her team deal with the raging cruelty shown towards dogs, what goes into their care and rehabilitation and how a little compassion can go a long way. Sally Varma is an animal rights activist. Her wish to create peaceful coexistence between humans and animals brought up Sally Varma to shift her career from journalism to animal welfare. Believing that the world belongs to every living creature that is a part of it, she started a small initiative called Save A Life. Although it all started as a Facebook page, the initiative helped rescue and rehome many animals from all over Kerala. It also helped to spread awareness on animal welfare & its impact on human lives and the malpractices to which animals, especially farm animals, are subjected due to factory farming and cruel transportation methods. She has worked as a community engagement officer for the NGO Humane Society International/India and was involved in an ABC (animal birth control) program for Street dogs in Malappuram district of Kerala. She has completed her para-veterinary course from Worldwide Veterinary Services (WVS), Ooty and was honored by the President of India as one of the 100 women achievers of India for her work in Animal Welfare. I'm a 16 year gir studying medical to become a veterinarian doctor and do something for those innocent souls (this rescuing, speak against animal cruelty is what my goal is) 🙂❤️ MAY I SUCCEED🤞🏻💞....will surely come one day to Tedx talks..plz do spread awareness among people... Don't call yourself an animal lover if you can't do anything for those souls.
I wish I could be a vet from young but I knew I couldn't make it. Hope you'll be a compassionate vet 1 day to help animals. But a strong one too, to deal with unreasonable humans and unimaginable cruelty cases.

So true! So well said. Everyone suddenly up in arms when an 'incident' happens. Lash out at the voiceless! But the loudest complainers do NOTHING .Without funding, no conveyor, I have spayed / neutered 46 dogs. Why are the dog haters so helpless??? Maybe the just need to vent hate, on ones that cannot answer back.
I got 8 dogs spayed/neutered free of cost last month in April 2024 from HSI, dehradun.. their services are amazing... Lots of thanks to Humane Society International!!

There were moments, when I was choked, frustrated, anguished as I heard about the atrocities by not so humane, human beings to these most adorable creatures. I don't really think we deserve such pure love in the form of these creatures when we as a society have become so shameless and morally corrupt!

You are spot on. Thank you for all your hard work, it's a tough job. There's no singular answer, maybe education and laws prohibiting ownership without taking a course could be included as a preventative measure. I have a 5 year old Border Collie, hurting her in any way is unthinkable, she is my adopted child. Just like humans, dogs aren't born bad, just bad owners and their environment. You are so brave to take on that job, good on you.

Dogs learn from their experience too. When they witness violence, it will make them fearful and lash out, just like humans will against a violent aggressor.

I feel your pain and helplessness. It is a sad world we are living in, and I myself have been grappling with witnessing the overwhelming cruelty towards the most innocent creatures on this planet-dogs.
I boil eggs and get pedigree food for them everyday in a bag, and try to do whatever little I can do. But yes, lot more I can do, and I will keep challenging myself to do more. I pray that for every one dog abuser, there are ten thousand savior

We rescued an injured stray dog few weeks back in Kerala. It was hard in the evening to find a rescue team. She was then in a different place, but helped 3 of us who got together to rescue the dog, to find a hospital, helping the dog to be admitted and throughout. Unfortunately the dog could not be saved, but the support she gave was immense. Hats off Mam.

sorry, not sure how this is practical... lots people are afraid of biting dogs, and people like Sally are not there helping by rescuing the aggressive dogs... so unless there is an army of such workers, your solution of "compassion" is not practical. Mind, you I am not saying that what people in your narrative do is correct also. But just saying, love them and they will not bite, is like a snake charmer saying... just be confident and you can handle cobras like me.... Again killing or harming snakes is also very bad (And rightly illegal, just like dogs) but you must understand that not everybody has your skills, and you provide no solution to this issue, in your talk... heck you don't even provide a balanced overview of the situation, let alone a solution... and the irony is that the title says a practical solution...
