You know, it just struck me, listening to your reading of Saavedro's journal, just how little we knew about what Sirrus and Achenar did in the Ages before they were imprisoned. All we really have are some hints in their bedrooms on the Myst Ages and their own words against each other from their respective prison books. Achenar's note to Sirrus in the Mechanical Age mentions "subjects" and "taxes", and Achenar alluded to "burning their homes" and "flooding their lands", but Sirrus was far more tight-lipped about exactly what they were up to. This journal, by contrast, provides a case study in the brothers' particular brand of megalomania and sociopathy. Myst 4 expands on this a little bit with mentions of Ti'ana's death having devastated Atrus to the point of all but neglecting his duties as a father, but in Myst, Atrus mentions having gone on a lot of journeys with both his sons.
I only mention this because I had a lot of difficulty wrapping my brain around exactly why the brothers were so vindictive. The Book of Ti'ana sets out Gehn's complex personality quite well: raised in the guild system of D'ni, having it ripped out from under him by the actions of his own mother alienated him to the point of loathing her and he spent the rest of his life trying to cobble together that grandeur, at the cost of many lives. But Sirrus and Achenar...? The game has us believe they were relatively normal children and then just became mustache-twirling villains in adulthood. Rand Miller seemed to portray Achenar as having some severe emotional and behavioural instabilities (as if the rib-cage lamp, electric cage and severed heads weren't enough), while Robyn Miller's Sirrus was more your classic sociopathic narcissist. Did they really not exhibit these behaviours as children or were Atrus and Catherine just in denial?
Whatever their reasons, its clear they believed themselves superior to the inhabitants of the individual ages and had no qualms about working in tandem to extort, rob and subjugate the Ages. Sirrus had a cloth from the Black Ships after all. But here, it looks like they used subterfuge rather than brute force and coercion. If nothing else, it's interesting to see how they went about their wicked ways.

Gotta love Sven's dramatic readings... This brings back memories of past frustrations and online help seeking.

I always found the Spider Spinner to be needlessly complicated, as the symbols on the dial, apart from moving the marble on the control panel, serve no purpose, as the symbols are already in order on the panel. I think the dials by the sonic rings should've been mixed up, so you actually have to match the weird symbols, instead of just the rotational position. But that's just me.

Saavedro's rage is so pure and underlies every location and puzzle in this game. This game is the best in the series at tying the three elements together: story, environment, and gameplay. I find myself impatient to get to the next performance by Brad Dourif, or the next few pages by Saavedro.

I need to remember to say that myself sometime.

I like how you've chosen the order of the puzzles. At this last puzzle's control panel, you can see the previous two. Makes it feel like progression of sorts.
