The colonial British built the causeway, road, and rail to transport tin and rubber from prosperous Malaya with the intention of making Malaya part of Great Britain. However, after World War II, the British faced financial constraints due to heavy spending on the war and could not afford to maintain their colonies. The British never expected that this causeway would become a symbol of friendship between these two brotherly nations.

They only built it to bring the wealth across to the port in Singapore. Explains why the internation shipping cartels would not support Malaysia in building it's own port till late 80s.

The problem is Bank Negara Malaysia does not managed the ringgit well. It depends fully on market forces & very frustrating. While Singapore dollar is pegged in narrow band against basket if currencies. The gap between both currencies will further widen in future and induce unnecessary commuters for better job (Malaysian), better groceries & leisure prices for Singaporean. BNM is source for the blame, imho.

Maybe in the future if Malaysia's central government decays and weakens to the point it can't control all the states.
In the meantime still cannot and even the most powerful in Johore can't do much about it.
But what you want has already happened just on a different and smaller scale. Both countries have gone to china for a summit meeting and the existence of a special economy zone in Johore for sg investors have already come into existence and become reality already. Though not by Singapore doings, more of a super nation wanting it to be so as all the big investors are in sg and also want a bigger exercising field so they are the ones who made things happen not the small nations ruling class. Though they should be happy about it. As it still benefits them.

☘️The good about the causeway is it provide a choice to seek an answer or a better quality of life for people if they want it.
The bad about the causeway is you will forever be bound to time constraint and can never be freed from it no matter whether you are rich, poor, struggling or going for shopping and holiday. Your mind will constantly be reminded of time and racing with time to achieve and complete your objectives in life. This can be a mental torture over time for those who are unable to cut themselves away from this bridge.

For malaysians it means you have a chance to earn higher regardless of what jobs await you on the other side.
For Singaporeans if they are the capable types it mean cheap labour and tenants to help you earn money and lighten your property mortage.
In the end both of these kinds want the same thing in life at old age. Material comfort and sense of security. Malaysians saved up enough for a landed back home and let their children to continue the cycle they have went fhrough and rely on savings and children to see them through the last chapter of life.
Singaporeans. Same. Once they have earned enough out of doing business and paying off their houses in Singapore they will use their savings and cpf drawouts to pass time in old life. Midvalley got a lot of this kind of singaporeans for studies purpose if you are curious to know. 😂
The above applies more to the older generations. The younger generations they are all basically screwed by this point. 🙂
