It's really interesting what Stephen is saying about Pandora's box being similar to the internet because I remember that short span of a few years that we did all believe things were going to be fixed in the world with the discovery of the internet. Such a great communication tool, we could reach outside the little box of information we were being fed to get the bigger picture and we could work collectively for a better future. I look back and realize how naive we were and I have learned the lesson: any medium that information is delivered to you can and will be manipulated in time, either by governments, corporations, special interests, etc. And since then I have become far more skeptical of things that come along and promise to "change" things. Sooner or later it will be corrupted.
bvansenu Yes. I remember my late grandad was absolutely fascinated by the notion of the internet. When we visited him as children he would talk about it after hearing things on the tv news. Later when we eventually got our first home computer he was amazed that you could just type whatever you wanted in and it would bring you a whole world of information up (after sitting and waiting what felt like an age for the web page to load-because dial up). Wonder what he would make of it all now.
I'm not skeptical of change, i just learned that there are no magical fixes. There's no magical button to press and no amazing invention that will come along and solve all our problems. Everything has drawbacks and everything can and will eventually be exploited. That doesn't mean that we should stop trying to improve, it just means that we have to be realistic about how we're actually going to go about doing it, and make sure that we don't get caught up in other bullshit along the way or set our expectations too high.
