  • Plane Spotting at Zurich Airport (6.4.24) on Observation Deck E capturing this incredible bouncing takeoff from Edelweiss A340-300 (HB-JMF) starting towards Cancun on runway 16.
    Reasons for this bouncing was, that shortly after start the A340 received to much tailwind and therefore had to less speed. During the short touchdown the A340 could get enough speed again for the final takeoff.
    That video has been captured by me, the video from ‪@ZRHSPOTTER-sw3ot‬ is similiar, as she stood only 2-3m next to me on the observation deck.

    I've seen a similar occurrence before. A change of wind direction at the point of rotation. The pilot did the right thing by reducing the climb for a few seconds to let the speed build up enough to climb successfully, excellent flying despite how odd this may look it was the correct thing to do.

      If you look at the smokestack in the background the wind in calm. No wind change on this one. I've never seen a touchdown after takeoff. Something unusual happened in the cockpit.

    yes, the a340, especially the -300, is really underpowered, it usually climbs to its cruise altitude in 40 minutes, sooo slowly, but the pilot did the right thing, avoiding the stall caused by the wind direction imminent change. By the way the a340 is my fav aircraft, lovely fr , especially the -600❤

    • @2FriendsAviation
      @2FriendsAviation 24 дня назад

      Yeah but still even though it’s underpowered think about the food things! The engines sound like heaven and isn’t it just chill to climb slowly upwards instead of being at 36000 feet after 15 minutes?

    Pilot handled it correctly, whatever the cause (excess weight?). Limp windsock at 00:12 suggests virtually nil windspeed (tiniest of headwinds) at that time at that point of the runway. Smoke at 0:53 almost vertical implying nil windspeed at that point (admittedly not on the runway). 00:40 _possible_ windsock (since it is slanted), if so then indicating insignificant wind there also.

    55 second take-off run is a little on the short side of average for large planes like this.

    Something went wrong in the cockpit. There is nothing that would explain that maneuver. Someone pushed the nose over after liftoff and then pulled it back up again. They'll investigate this one. The tail was also very close to the ground indicating possibly an early rotation. We'll see what they find out.

    Pilots got the performance figures wrong. Rotated too early. There was still a lot of runway left. The A340-300 is underpowered anyway. Imagine if that aircraft had lost an engine as it rotated? It would never have made it.

      wouldn't the co-pilot have called V1 meaning that they had to take off, further meaning that rotation can (must) be applied at that point becaue the necessary speed for take off had been reached?

    • @vintagegamingrepublic5156
      @vintagegamingrepublic5156 4 месяца назад +2

      @@cosmicdebris2223 No, V1 means point of no return, they can't abort take-off after that, however that does not mean it has to take-off immediately, only after reaching necessary speed for take-off, VR meaning rotate.
