Thank you. They are a treasured resource only available to this land. I got sick of them one time when wife made a stew with too many of them making it too strong of a mushroom flavor.
Thanks for all your excellently shot videos Matt. After a few years of watching RUclipss I was starting to get a little bored til I just found yours and watched about ten now in the last two evenings (that’s a whole lot for me, I constantly skip around) all the way through and back to back. So interesting for any fan of Oregon geology, hiking, and landscapes!
Thank you very much. I try to make videos a captivating and standalone experience, ignoring the youtube stuff. Everyone says stick to a niche, but I have gone with whatever I find interesting in the outdoors. Turns out many of us have a similar interest of learning about our natural world.
Once again you have brought back happy memories. I grew up hunting chanterelles in the coast range. The forest was beautiful. I could almost pick up the scent of the forest floor. Thank you.
Your documentaries never disappoint. Congratulations. I love hunting for mushrooms, and always worried about the positives and the negatives of mushrooms we can eat. Your Vlogs never disappoint; Thank you for being such an amazing professional!
Nice. I didn't share specific location cause some of these ones are total gold mines every year. I want to branch out and learn other mushrooms at some point. Even our dry eastern side of the cascades gets some nice ones.
You do a really great job. Very informative and interesting. Too many videos just are about people who are basically saying "Hey, look at me, I'm in the woods collecting mushrooms."
Thanks for that. You described a big motivation I had when starting the channel. I was looking for info on mountains and there was too much face cam and not enough info on the mountain that I wanted. I haven't had much time for videos lately but hopefully soon!
Great job on the video! I really enjoy mushroom hunting throughout the coast range. It gets you out to some sweet places! Nice job explaining the way to identify!
Thank you. A couple of the clips were from the coast here, but I was too busy managing babies that day. I haven't harvested that much from the coast, but I imagine its pretty good with that moisture.
Thank you. Whats cool is that big basket was all from a South facing slope, totally opposite of the usual advice. They are everywhere, just hiding a bit.
Fun activity for a cool fall day! I really enjoy looking for mushrooms, but haven’t been harvesting … I appreciate learning more about these Golden Chanterelles… maybe I’ll go out looking for just this variety… I want to make sure we’re careful and don’t get any poisonous ones! The book you showed looks really helpful and great to see the comparison with the other similar mushroom. Thanks Matt! 👍👍
If you come across rough skinned newts you are in mushroom country. ;) I frequented a region about an hour west of Lookingglass as a kid, and came across mushroom pickers often.
The Danners?! I had them too long so they are worn down and now my junky work boots. They were solid for awhile. A bit on the heavy side but I liked that for big support when carrying a heavy backpack.
Thank you. But, in distinguishing a chanterelle from not a chanterelle, you state, at 4:48:: ". . .but the chanterelle has deep forked ridges" and then a word like "in-step" or "instead". . . . What did you say or mean there? Don't want to make a mistake!
Thanks! Definitely do some reading as this is just an intro. I said most mushrooms have deeper gills, but chanterelles have shallow forked ridges instead.
I second that - definitely do some reading, biting into a misidentified mushroom can be an Extremely unpleasant experience at best. Google that and you’ll know what I mean.
The forest in Oregon are so beautiful 🤩 river , water fall , the most famous in Oregon is hunting wild mushroom every year , king crab 🦀 fishing, wild vegetables 🥗,! A Asian people saving a lot of money 💰 they love hunting foods in the forest, fun , love ❤️, happy, enjoy and relaxing 😌!
Hey Matt, are you related to a Darrel Cook? He passed a number of years ago. He was my grandpa. Was wondering if we are related. 😊 Random I know. 🤷♂️👋
@@MattCookOregon thank you ❤️ Do you know any of the cook family around Bend? Most of them are related to me. 😊🤷♂️ Anyways it’s always nice to meet another forager. Not a lot of us left after Covid. Happy hunting and stay safe. ✌️
Interesting. However, I'll stick with obtaining mushrooms from a store where they should be edible and not poisonous, and leave wild gathering for people who know what they're doing.
Working in America 🇺🇸 compare to another countries are better , like me single mom helping my families selling Thai food in the small food cart , I can buy food and shopping do everything I want , every months I still have money to save 💰 in my banks, I have nothing to worry with my living life in America
Nice finds, dude. These are THE pnw mushroom and I never get tired of them

Thanks Jim! I really like how this got to touch an important part of our outdoor culture. Hopefully more like this to come.
And of course you have a very cool basket! I love it!
Thanks Melanie. Not sure where my wife got that big it is perfect for photography isn't it.
You're psychic and it's time to pack the basket! Iris is Beautiful!
Thank you. Had to push this one out quick since its so seasonal.
Matt, I have some great spots here for collecting in the Santa Cruz Mountains so great to see you doing it in your neck of the woods.

Lovely video perfect balance.
Thanks Dan. I do try to balance quite a few things in these videos so that is nice to hear.

Such a beautiful and informative video on mushroom hunting, Matt. 👍
Thank you Arielle the Viking! This was fun to do.
Yay! A new video and just at the right time too!
Thanks for checking it out. I need to learn about wild berries next for another video.
man you got a nice spot there :) I need to start keeping an eye out for them, now that I have a better idea what I'm looking for :)
Thank you. Whats cool is that big basket was all from a South facing slope, totally opposite of the usual advice. They are everywhere, just hiding a bit.
Matt, I enjoyed this informative video. Cheers, Mate.
Thanks Jack. I enjoyed making it.

Thanks Jennifer. It is a lot of fun. love activities that give me a goal when hiking.
Great family adventure! I’m
Sharing my secret location 😂😂
Thank you. Ha the one time I finally didn't show it all on a map.

Yes newts for the mushrooms that need lots of moisture. I am just getting into the mushrooms on east side of cascades like a morel.
Way back when, we would always leave a few for future crops..
I left hundreds! Maybe a topic for debate. Mushrooms are resilient though.
Morels are another edible Mushroom that is popular in Oregon and the best time to hunt for them is right after a fire.
True! Lots of options there with all our fires.
Side note of oddness 😅 I have that same pair of hiking boots 🙃 Too funny.😁
The Danners?! I had them too long so they are worn down and now my junky work boots. They were solid for awhile. A bit on the heavy side but I liked that for big support when carrying a heavy backpack.
@@MattCookOregon the brown and black ones are dancers? Looks like my bear claw hiking boots.

Whoops, I meant at minute 4:58. . . .

A Cook! My Cook family was in bend about 30 years ago but all moved away since. Its uh, different there now, but the nature is still nice!
@@MattCookOregon agreed 👍 I bet we are related 😅
@@2HighNoon So you owe my kids birthday presents for the last 4 years.
Love Chanterelles sautéed in butter on a hamburgers
The basic obviously has to be cute😂
I got 2 daughters now prepare for a whole channel about cute stuff!

Probably safe. Though people at restaurants have been known to eat a bad mushroom before too!

I love thai food carts. Where is it?
How to collect edible mushrooms in Oregon and be sure you’re not going to die from misidentification: buy them at the grocery store.
Stores and restaurants have mixed them up before. I will trust myself over someone I haven't met.
