/ @sciencenetworksociety... www.tiktok.com/@sciencenetwor... Make sure to use a very small amount of baking soda! A lot less than what you see in the video.
If you want to do this with a less acidic fruit, you'd need to add something else that is acidic such as vinegar, for example. So not the best considering any acidic ingredient will change flavor. But it's possible
The solution will have a salty taste because of the sodium citrate formed from the reaction resulting in an unpleasant drink. It's best to react the lemon juice/vinegar (acid) and the sodium bicarbonate (base) in a separate container with a connecting tube that bubbles the carbon dioxide into the water in a separate container.
@@prorandocopier7945 see, when you add acid + base it gives salt and water so Acid + base ----> salt + water. So, when we react baking soda (base) with lime/lemon juice or vinegar (Acid) it makes carbon dioxide and salt resulting in a salty floury over all unpleasant taste of the drink. He’s/She’s saying that we should react it in a separate container with a tube connected and sealed on to that container & the 2nd hole of the tube put in a glass of water to carbonate it. Hope you understand….
so my question to you is before I spend hundreds of dollars on a home seltzer maker maybe if I am poor it would be cheaper just to mix some citric acid and baking soda in my favorite drink instead so for instance if i were to add it to coconut water I guess it would now be sparkling coco nut water ? thoughts please thank you!
That's sooo funny you did that because I always thought to mix baking soda WHITH my flat soda but I was like I don't know if that's a good idea but here you are doing this just lets me know to try what was in my mind to do in the first place thanks
Thanks very much for this. I am trying to make a cheap homemade soda water to use with my homebrew wine to make 'Lockdown Spritzers'. How long does the drink remain fizzy? Does it go flat soon afterwards?
It depends on how long it is kept in the refrigerator. To be honest, it will not be remaining as fizzy/long as commercial ones. However, it works to some degree. I hope you can eventually make a better drink of yours than mine!
@@MrTiMHere I am not surprised how ignorant you westerners are, You westerners are born in a overpriviledge and rich family so you probably thinks it's cheap. Getting everything without any struggle or hard work must be very enjoyable gor you.
it doesnt, the body corrects the pH itself, bicarbonate is a natural byproduct of digestion i used to drink ENO for my gerd and that absolutely destroyed my health
Unless you have diaphragm trauma, the real reason for you GERD is H Pylori bacteria trapped in your stomach lining. Even with endoscopy it hides. Take 2 allicin tablets or chew one clove of garlic til it burns, with water (nothing else) on an empty stomach, for 2 weeks and your GERD will disappear and you'll be off proton pump inhibitors and all that. Been there done that. Give it a shot, you can get your quality of life back in 2 weeks
does adding the baking soda make it taste weird/what does it taste like? genuine question because i was considering buying a sparkle water carbonation machine but heck if it's this easy I'll just do this!!!
Avoid taking too much sodium in your diets, but you can drink this if thereafter reduce salt intake in the next couple meals. Also sodium citrate taste way less salty than normal table-salt and also contains less sodium by same weight.
let me explain. It isnt safe since You might have some base or acid leftover. so Citric acid (in lemons) [HOC(CO2H)] reacts with baking soda (which is a base) [ NaHCO3 ] to pruduce random salt that dissolve in ur drink and CO2 gas which also dissolves and water) so why it isnt safe? here ima explain, baking soda is base which if u drink can react with acid in ur stomach. citric acid isnt that dangerous but still it could hurt ur neck or smth. Also as i said it produces random salt, which could be dangerous, i dont know much about it but yeah. i have my own methode to do that, ill probably post it into my yt channel soon! u can watch and its surely safer then this. gl! YES. Instead, i put two bottoles side by side. One with liquid to be carbonated filled with 1 inch head space, and the other filled about 1/2 way with water. In the screw tops i have a tube connecting through holes i drilled in caps and hot glued around to make airtight. Use whatever you have such as silicone, plumbers tape, gorilla glue, whatever semi flexible sealant or glue. make sure when you glue the tubes that one tube will fully submerged to almost the bottom of the liquid and the other tube will remain towards the top where the airspace is of the water so it does not submerge. take a tiny piece of tissue paper and make it into a little pouch just to fit the baking soda into. Make sure it will drop in the hole easily and quickly so make it long and skinny. Drop it in liquid FAST and close lid FAST. Still working quickly attach or screw on the juice or liquid to be carbonated. Now it's air tight and the reaction from the baking soda will release gas through the tube into your liquid, force carbonating. It will not affect flavor, you can do it over again to get more carbonation, and you can carbonate ANYTHING. Have fun kids!!!
It is because of too much of sodium in the baking soda. Make sure to use a smaller amount of baking soda (a lot less than what you see in the video) and you may also want to add some sugar or some flavor

It is a smart question. Most fruits should be ok. However, citrus fruits are usually better. Like lemon, orange, lime etc.
You need acidic fruits as a baseline
