Learned something new!! I always assumed vector was just a "style" of drawing known for simplicity... but this is an eye opener (and has explained a common headache of mine as to why my pixel art blurs with increased size!)
the reason most* vector* drawings look so graphic is because it's impossible to do anything too complex with it & have consistently good results
@@bupcorn4136 honestly I'll have to look into a vector program to draw my backgrounds in... I try to stick to simplistic design and it would be so crisp👌👌
not really an explanation for it getting blurrier, just saying it exists. but, if you open a pixel art image then make it bigger then maybe save it as a copy you can get around this
Because its pixel art you should instead upscale it with nearest neighbor and not anything else
@@sanxit_ is nearest neighbor like a program I'm guessing?
A vector is made of -math.- *_DIRECTION AND MAGNITUDE._*
I mean- math is just it being simplified. Direction and magnitude is the basics for vector, but guess what interprets that data? Math. Guess what created that data? Math.
OH YEAH!!!!!
Same thing
I heard that as meth
@@PlokFanBoy29PIRANHA GUN! OH YEAHHH!
a quantity represented by an arrow represented by *direction* and MAGNITUDE! OHYEAAAAAA-
Vector'd
Oh gods damn it, I’ve started learning about vectors in math recently lmao
Oh poop.
Oh poop.
ap physics 1 😳
As an artist with a husband going for his bachelors in Computer Science Engineering and he is currently a Software Engineer. I LOVE THIS VIDEO you explain it so well. I love SVGs so much and ever since he introduced me to them i try and use them as much as possible.
Learned to do Bitmap to Vector work in high school. Really useful skill as a general creative.
Bro teaches Art and Comp Sci at the same time. 🗿🔥
I love how educational your videos are.
A cool thing about vectors is that they often save a LOT on storage space. This is why old flash animation used vectors, because the internet used to be really slow, and flash allowed for animations to be shared online efficiently.
I like how I learned about the difference between raster and vector data in a GIS mapping course but never made the connection what that means for vector art lmao
Oh she is back 😍 🙌
Thank you, I will draw exclusively in vector (when I start drawing)
I've made like one or two pictures in vector using the "most sophisticated" program imaginable... Scratch. Mostly because I didn't know there were proper programs for Vector art.
CSP has a vector function!
As someone who works in the printing industry, I have seen absolutely gorgeous vector art that looks like a painting!
Unfortunately, those files are usually either 90% meshes or tens of thousands of individual gradient pieces. They are damn near impossible to color correct without first rasterizing them. Never mind the amount of work that goes into making the files in question.
My boi clip studio paint has Vector and Rastor as well as having your Rastor brushes in the Vector layer and Vector brushes in Rastor layer to swap between Rastor and Vector you need to add a layer that it there is two layer add options being “add Rastor layer” and “add Vector layer” you can also have Rastor sketch then add a Vector layer on top and do line art an’ colouring
real
as someone who uses flash, uhhhh you can use the brush tool and make it look paint like and shit if you use like less smoothness
I learned this on my digital graphic design technical career at school, and i hate it so much because our teachers ALWAYS wanted us to use Adobe Illustrator for things we could do way better with literally any other program, even non-vectorial software, if they wanted it to have quality bro just use a bigger canvas fr
0:50 what tool is that? The fill tool I mean?
anyone from scratch draw with vector for like 2 years of their life?
hopefully not just me
You can turn a raster into a vector though
Does it work on mobile tho
Are there any free drawing apps that work in vector , prefersbly on phone and please dont tell me photoshop , it is not easy to learn
doesnt matter which way it is drawn, it is still degen art.

Vector art is basically drawing exept ONLY with bézier courves. My lineart is generally horrible so this really isnt new to me :)
Came here 4 your voice.🥰
They're the same picture.
One of the really cool things about old flash animations (.swf) is that they are vector animations, which means they can be rerendered in modern high resolution. There are animations as old as the late 90s which can today be rasterized and uploaded to RUclips in perfectly crisp 4K resolution, even though back then people were watching them on 480p CRTs. It's a lot like the digital equivalent of analog film.
Pretty cool stuff. I have many old swf files saved on my computer and even though they're decades old, they look great today!
Reading .swf in this comment instantly made me flashback to the days of playing a hacked version of Bloons Super Monkey 1 on some rando website, so thank you for that.
@@MageBurger OMG BLOONS MENTIONED!!
Thank you for this information. I was always confused on why some images I have on my PC from some Art I downloaded had extremely unfamiliar file extensions because I always thought that only .JPG .PNG . GIF. WEBP. and PDF. only existed as file extensions for images.
there are many more for different apps like opentoonz has .tnz and adobe illustrator has .ai and more stuff like that
and some files are js.. weird.

I make use of vectors all the time on my art, even though I technically only draw raster. I do my sketches in MSPaint (yes, that Paint) then I send the sketch over to Corel DRAW where I draw the final linearts over the sketch using vectors and then I export them as transparent PNGs and finish up everything else (coloring, shading, effects, etc.) in Photoshop.
Drawing vectors is a very time consuming process and the whole sequence (Paint > Corel > Photoshop) is not straight-forward (I'd even say it's kinda cumbersome) but having the linearts vectorized is wonderful. I can draw a sketch at a small size/resolution and still get extremely high resolutions with high quality lines by simply choosing the right thickness of my lines and export resolution. It gives me a high resolution final product and makes it way easier to paint and shade it. Those great results and how time-consuming drawing vectors is are the reasons why I always say that I have a love/hate relationship with vectors. I love the results, but am not too fond of how long it takes to get there. It is worth it in the end, though.
do not ruin the 69 likes
Oh THATS why my earlier artworks were blurry asf 😮 took me 5 years to figure that one out
This was the most pleasant explanation of vector vs raster, thank you, I'll be linking a lot of people to it.
I use Krita for both vector and raster, if you get it through the official webiste then it's free in case you're not srue which art style you prefer (Krita also supports animation if you also want to see the difference in animation). Actually if you want to edit text in Krita, you have to use vector, but the other vector tools like the shapes can also be used on raster layers.
Meanwhile, GIMP is ... weird. It's raster by nature, but you can import vector files (rasterizing them in the process). Paths are vector objects but don't occupy image space in and of themselves, and text is technically vector (because fonts) but is always _always_ rasterized, which causes problems if you want to apply transforms to text.
(Fun fact - apparently Krita began as a fork of GIMP)
I remember being confused on what vector was and why I was able to draw off the canvas in Toonsquid with a vector brush, glad I now know lol.
Thank you for this explanation very simple but very helpful and easy to understand. I hope lots of beginners see this, and recently ibispaint just added vectors hope users see this
I sure will!
0:51 Now I want someone to make a great vector version of that Octavia just to spite you. ;P
I was taught this in a college course, but this is very, very helpful for those who don’t have the funds for expensive courses
What drawing app is a vector? (Preferably on a mobile device or free lol)
Inkscape is free, occasionally buggy but very fun with the node tools and customizability
I always called rasters “bitmaps” (which is probably because that’s what their called in scratch)
Same!
The only times i saw 'raster' was when rasterizing text inputs and framed borders. Which makes sense in hindsight as those are more algorithmic based than "handmade" like raster art!
Bitmaps are raster
same
Scratch is also why I know of SVG / Vector
i love these videos so much its unreal
I clean up a lot with Illustrator, or sometimes I just pen tool the whole with my trackball
this is a quite simple yet forgettable piece of info that needs to be kept in mind every time i make any project. adobe illustrator and svg files are so small but they can be resized to any desired size unlike raster images that went through photoshop are usually large and can only be zoomed in so much.
All of FiM pone was vector based
Once a vector, always a vector.
Once a raster, always a raster.
I didn't really use vector outside of flash and animate, but after trying to draw my comic I quickly swapped to vector, it just felt easier and faster.
we are learning vectors in my digital design class and i must say adobe illustrator is not fun
Maan, I use Krita, supposedly a Vector art program, and I've never bothered to save stuff as a vector file. People just prefer PNGs and get confused if I send them an SVG.
I thought the thumbnail was Minecraft banners for a hot second
i dont care how much crisper it looks, adobe illustrator HATES me and i STILL cannot use it to save my life
Clip is so powerful with its type of vector layers, especially in its animation mode.
Everything is cubes a just some of them are very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very small.
And there are also software like CSP, where you can draw in vector for easy modification but in most cases still export in raster.
Also, usually you don't have to draw in vector, because it's always a good practice to draw raster in a pretty high resolution. And usually if something is good enough for print, it will be good enough for display. The only case where you have to investigate in vector is if you need to produce design for die cutting or laser etching.
And then there is webm
Helpful art-wolf friend is helpful. :)
newly started drawing with a bit of vector in clip studio paint. i can draw with all my brushes in vector and it's no less time consuming than regular, makes it weird to erase and coloring is a pain but otherwise it's great. i was scared of vector because of seeing all the lines and dots and reajustings people made, but knowing i can draw fairly normally in CSP makes me actually like it and enjoy the process. and it's so nice to have line art i can scale without worrying about rouge pixels or blurryness. especially since i use textured brushes most of the time.
The thing is, and this is what I've done with some of my drawings, was then when I re-scaled something, I end up re-drawing a part of that in the new scaling on a different layer (or copying/pasting the original group layer folder/duplicating the layer folder I have) and re-draw every part I have from scratch, just to make it look 4k, as well as having the resolution go from 500 or the default size when it came to 1080p, to now having it over 1000 resolution to make it easy for people to zoom in soo dang much. So I think seeing this, I might end up increasing the resolution size to about 1500 or 2000, just so that you can see the crisp pixels if necessary. But yes, things drawn as rastors do need to be re-drawn for them to look nice (and not that many artists are willing to re-trace the original lines that artists drew before back in the day).
Many people miss these, awesome video :)
Raster San seems nice, but gets a little morally blurry the closer you get to them.
Vector Chan is genuine through and through! XD
Pov: you are a graphic designer and you remember your younger self when you started out
I’m a vector artist :D
I used to think vector was a professional program that you can pose, animate and make my little ponies. Now I know why I could never find that app. Turns out I was wrong, you learn something new everyday.
I am still yet to figure where to export SVG in Clip Studio.
It has the advantage of Vector Layers, but the smart object part is a challenge.
I used Medibang Paint, which is a raster drawing app
0:52 Depending on the skill, you can draw the right pic as a vector (by hand, not trace bitmap). Greetings, 4 years being a vector artist
Ibispaint:👁👄👁
i hate using vector programs, but at the same time, im probably going to do vector graphics for the rest of my life
Sorry to hear that you have such a love-hate relationship with vector? XD What do you hate most about them and why do you think you'll keep doing vector graphics? Just curious =)
Vector needs cpu. Lots of cpu. Raster needs gpu, gpus got so good at what they do, if u have a dedicated one, theres no point in vector just like voxels
I most of time try to draw my pictures in vector layers, but I also most of time draw in raster. Really depends.
I like rasterized cause I can use ✨️ brushes ✨️
Subtract

Accidentally clicked this, didnt expect to get a lesson. No regrets.
I love blur, and raster art is useful if you don't want to have 10 gb of images in your program / game. I never really used vector as i had no need, if i need something in higher resolution, i draw it in higher resolution. And if you want your art not to blur while scaling, you should try making it 2 times bigger instead of a random scaling. It works most of the time, and doesn't get that blurry. But it won't fix the pixels, they are there, always and forever.
Tried Vector art ingame for the game APB way back in 2010... not fun.
i'm a sucker for anything vector, i just love it's flexibility. My only issue with it is that as much as inkscape is powerful, it's still not as powerful as i'd like and there is basically nothing free to do vector animation a side from glaxnimate which crashes on me every microsecond and blender as much as it tried to be 2d software as well, it isn't. i just wish vector art was more popular to get decent software to make it with...
So cute
Erm.. excuse me?
Do people make art with vectors?? I get animation, but art??
Dude i do everything on my phone the pixels are hard not to notice i make it all at the maximum comfortable size of 1900x1900, i make it work but most of the time its still visible
Oh no, not you zooming in on the vector and saying its made with MATH!!! 😂
Clipstudio paint is unholy with the textured vectors
Actually you can make shadows and gradients by using vectors
Yes its harder for the avarage user
But still
This made me realize i've used raster images this entire time 😱 My life is a lie (not really lol)
Literally Blender Animators (still blurry when render ends in your project and resolution dependency)
is nobody talking about how at 0:53 that looks exactly like a scene in Aggretsuko???
"What is the point in vectors if your display is 7×4 pixels? "
forever mad at clip studio paint for not giving us vector layers that are actually vector layers
0:53 MY LITTLE PONYYYY MY LITTLE PONY AaaAaaAa
Octavia from mlp
I almost always draw in vector and I use scratch to draw it in
Bro the video has raster pixels:
Bro the quality has vector pixels:
I ain't drawing on CorelDRAW fr
Vector? Do u mean… desmos graphing calculator?
will there ever be a way to draw vector art without having to use “complicated” tools
i like how smooth and simple vector art is, my personal favorite example is patapon 1 and 2, third one is also good but this one lean a bit much into badass category for me, but it's still nice
i thought raster was called bitmap or smth
Im slowly shifting from gimp to inkscape
And like always, its way easier to trace the image in both.
Im drawing a thing for a shirt and i did draw it in Word how i can made it a vector?
me when clipstudiopaint
signed distance field can be from-rasterized-map (multi sampling a buffered distance field, like TH2 does a lot) OR from any function, analytic, iterative, recursive...
