Perfect, just perfect. Lifelong drummer here just picking up the bass again. I have plenty of theory but needed these basics to avoid developing typical bad habits and I thank you for that.
Mark, Thank you. I'm a drummer who is learning bass for the first time and a complete beginner. Your vids are so helpful and easy to understand. Cheers!
Mark, your live stream about walking bass (Autumn Leaves) was fantastic. Your way of teaching is very special. I wish more people would know you. Thanks for everything.
I'm learning bass and I'm in band class in highschool and this channel is really helping me shine during our performances. Thanks for all the helpful tips!
Hi big man i have been bass on and off years.. Just winging it.. So i decided lets, do this right.. Found your vids..some of the music tech speak i lag a bit.. But i dont care at this moment... You have opened so many doors for me even after just a few vids.. Youre a genius thanks
When you were soloing over the track at the end of the video, how do you transition from one scale to the next? The track starts on C and then goes to G, so how are you transitioning from the C scale to the G scale in your solo? A video on this would be great. Thank you.
Mark thankyou so much ive purchased beginner and basic fundamental courses. My hands are not fkexible due to too many years of karate and goalkeeping. Thanks to you im slowly improving. Any advice on improving my movement on neck would be appreciated. YOU'RE my bass god thankyou
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons PLEASE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THESE! I lot of the times im learning many scales but cant seem to incorporate them when i play
Hi Mark, Thank you for all your efforts in passing on the knowledge and experience, it would be great to make a video about chord progressions, how to select root notes and place them after one another, etc. You rock
Tnx a lot Mark, grate as always. You are the best : ) Can you please show how to play major pentatonic scale all around fretboard with diferent fingering...Tnx
Mr Smith, you said that a pentatonic scale for C major was C Db F Gb Fb G ? Does the pentatonic mean missing or excluding any 2 notes I choose ? I enjoy your lessons
Great video, tanks for another great lesson. About other scale lessons? Well, let me think.... Modes modes modes modes modes modes freaking modes please!!!!!!!
Hi Mark. As per my question on a recent live stream, I’m still obsessed with the Neapolitan scale. More specifically how the N6 chord fits in with other chords tones. Also, I’ve been learning about secondary dominants. I understand the the theory but no so much as to living up a bass line. It would be great to get some advice on this. Cheers from Portsmouth.
I'd be very interested in how the modes are connected to each other. For example if you play an E phrygian scale further down you basically end up in an A minor scale starting from the A on the E string. I see a pattern but I can't quite figure it out. I hope you can make a nice video explaining this. PS thanks for all your work! I'm a huge fan of what you do!
Awesome teacher! Can you please help out with how to apply scales or modes or what ever in to a song, and can you please help me out with a very simple to understand the ninth chord, and will playing by the numbers systems, help me learn to play by ear more, I know the whole fretboard, all the major minor scale major minor triads, major minor pentatonic scales and a few other, I can play them anywhere on the fretboard, I also know the numbers systems and how it is layed out, but I have only been learning for about 9 months now, I don't know how to put it together in a song? So could you please help me or other people out, i am sick of banging on the root note!
Gordon Brumfield Already done two 45 min lessons on modes. Just search modes for bass and you'll see them. I suspect modes won't be as useful as you think.
I know my scales and modes, but I just hammer through them with quarter notes or double up with sixteenth notes. I hear players like Duck Dunn just float through these modes with different patterns and rhythms. I would like to learn how to practice that. I also hear a lot of Jazz players jamming through these modes with what sounds to me like one lick after the next. I want to get out of this box I'm stuck in using these modes. Please help.
Holy crap he’s wearing an LA Guns shirt! This was an enjoyable concert tho. They sound like shit which is entertaining in its own right, and there’s a few magic moments in it but it’s sort of like watching a car wreck. The drummer is amazing. Just fascinating watch/listen really. I really like Celtic Frost but this was a lame performance but I’m glad it’s here. Mixed emotions which for me means GLORIOUS!
Yeah that LA Guns shirt is the blackest you’ll ever see. I don’t have a drummer with me but I’m sure what you’re hearing is wicked. As for Celtic Frost, I didn’t really include any in the lesson but I’ll think about it in future. Thanks for the insightful critique
Lol I was revisiting this vid and realized I oddly posted about Celtic Frost in here; I was watching Celtic Frost live at Hammersmith and somehow posted my comment in here 🤷🏼♂️ Thanks for your hilarious response lol that was awesome 😂
kahwigulum That's roughly how modes are constructed but there's a lot more to the story than that. Hence both my modes videos being nearly an hour each.

Wow, you're a perfect teacher, can't stress this enough! I've learn so much from you. These classes deserve way more views.
I wish I could like this 50 times. No one has been able to answer this for me in the 6 years I’ve been playing.

Great lesson! Really stoked to have you teach me!
This is a real good lesson! As usual! Thanks Mark!
When you were soloing over the track at the end of the video, how do you transition from one scale to the next? The track starts on C and then goes to G, so how are you transitioning from the C scale to the G scale in your solo? A video on this would be great. Thank you.
Great lesson as always. I want to see how to apply this to different genres of music , mainly a rock setting where things are moving a little faster.

Mr Smith, you said that a pentatonic scale for C major was C Db F Gb Fb G ? Does the pentatonic mean missing or excluding any 2 notes I choose ? I enjoy your lessons

Mark, could you make a lesson on how to follow a guitar? I usually jam with my guitarist friend and most of the time i find it hard to follow him
That could be your guitar player's problem more than you!
Love you

Why does everyone want to know more about modes? What's there to know. Just play the scale starting on a different note. That's modes. Next!
