Tiny boat home packs sunroom & dock on remote kayakers' lake

- To reach the Iloft floating cabin, you drive five hours north from Montreal to Quebec's third-largest lake and then kayak 45 minutes along Lake Saint-Jean to finally arrive in an uninhabited bay to climb aboard the buoyant greenhouse tiny house.
When we left Montreal mid-day on a summer Saturday, we had no idea that we had a kayak trip ahead of us, so when we arrived at the lakeshore at sundown, we had to hurry through our kayaking lesson and safety instructions.
With a storm approaching, we went as fast as our novice skills would take us, but it was still a good hour before we approached the bay and the blinking light of the amphibious shelter. With a butane camping stove, we cooked up a quick dinner, blew up an air mattress (the cabin sleeps 2 and we were five), and settled in for the night. We awoke to rain hitting the plastic roof and huge views of our private bay.
The Iloft is really more of a floating greenhouse: over a third of the structure is a transparent dome that warms the structure quickly with the sun's rays. The kitchen includes the stove, ample potable water, and cookware and the outside porch houses an outhouse with composting toilet and a barrel to dump gray water.
The large dock that extends from the home is a perfect fit for two kayaks (we had to park three) and the only way off the Iloft is by kayak. There are no roads nor even paths through the surrounding forest. Hugues Ouellet from Equinox Adventure, the company that hosts the stays, explained to me that they don't own any land or water rights because the cabin is floating (on water in summer and the Igloft on ice in winter) it's outside any formal jurisdiction.
The Innu, the First Nation people who used to spend their warm season here, called the lake Piékouagami, meaning shallow lake.
For us, the off-grid adventure was a chance to get off the highway and slow down to a rhythm not driven by automobiles or even sidewalks. We spent the rainy early morning playing cards and sunny mid-day kayaking to other uninhabited islands.

An incredible childhood for your young ones. May they value it over and over through their own lives.
I'm only 4 mins in and this feels like the start of an amazing horror film.
Those kids are extremely lucky to have you two as their parents. Keep on doing awesome things!
Kayaking for an hour with two small children for the first time onto a cold, choppy, unfamiliar lake, heading into a storm and darkness. The fearlessness of youth; the hubris of adults.
@@mulemule I know right?!
I saw the sun, and that's what i thought too.
How much sunlight do they have? Then what? paddle in pitch dark?
I have a HUGE smile on my face just watching this. What a lovely little spot! What a wonderful experience and memory to give to your kids!
You started as the only person who takes your own video. Then theres the hubby, then s drone. And now one of your daughters. Really nice and keep it up
She always bring the kids along. Fun adventures!
I've been following your channel for YEARS ..and it's so odd but endearing, to see your kids all grown up..especially your now teenage daughter.. and they get on with each other so wonderfully :)
I had my doubts as the sun was setting and you guys were setting out. But, when you got to that cove I said "Oh my God, look at that. Is that not fantastic." Also impressed with how many languages Kirsten and family speaks. Tres bien.
In the summer, the dusk lasts longer and the daylight is longer as a result of being far north and I assume this was in the summer due to their clothes.
@@31mcml Yep, there were a couple of people wearing shorts.
I love it!
This reminds me of staying with my great aunt. I slept in the sun room in Florida and awoke to such warm and beautiful sun across my skin in the middle of winter. Sure beat a MN winter.
Ah, yes. But this place is missing the best part of FL. The thunderstorms. What a joy that must be in a sunroom.
"I can't make it move, I'm too légère"
Gotta love some franglais!
@earthly firefly5 wether,a fish on Mars,or a dust mote on the moon,,which is more implasible?
Wow. That is crazy getting there at night in kayaks.. Very brave. I would never do that.
What an amazing experience. I would love to sleep in that floating greenhouse and love the kayaking as transportation instead of sport. Beautiful part of the planet.
OMG, Kirsten... I can't believe it's been so many years that I've been following your adventures. The kids are getting so tall! Love your posts; carry on, Kirsten!
It’s so nice to see your children grow.
Sweet kids
Be sure to have organic oatmeal only, as the commercial oatmeal is soaked in RoundUp from Monsanto. Yuck.
@@SeaJay_Oceans Thanks for the unsolicited tip.
They don’t shrink ❤
I can see a writer or anyone who needs to unplug from the electronic world making great use of the "quiet" surroundings. So peaceful.......TFS.
I loved your comment about time, as measured out by church bells, and about being open to the moment. What a glorious place.
Leaving at sundown makes for quite the adventure.
That'll be a great experience as a family, for all to remember. Those kids are so resilient & took things well. However, I'd feel better if everyone was taught how to paddle correctly, & if you'd made an earlier start - like in the morning, after breakfast... rather than heading out to find a remote cabin, as evening fell.
45 minutes is a long time for kids - or adults - to paddle if not used to it, & they didn't seem to know enough to dig deeper & put their back into it, to move faster, with less wasted effort. I was so relieved when you arrived.
I liked the simple construction of the place. It's given me an idea for a backyard project as greenhouse/ retreat/ guest house!
Cheryl Anderson
I think they didn't realize it would take so long to get there. Maybe they just couldn't arrive earlier since they had a 5 hour drive from Montreal. Great retreat.
I love people who create a way to live differently, and its always cool because they used their own ideas and creativity, thats what we are suppose to be in life, our own people figuring out life, our life, not a life society has dictated to us. Love the greenhouse guys, you dont get any more original than that.
What a beautiful way to access a cabin! Spectacular! It even waited for you to arrive before the rain poured down! My parents still use a percolating coffee pot for their coffee because it tastes so much better!
No it doesn't. It tastes like boiled coffee which is literally the worst coffee.
this was great finally seeing you and not another person being interviewed
Have been watching for over five years. This is one of my favorites.!Thank you!
Oscar and Lucinda...adventures in the wild. Beautiful place to be without any neighbors..great family time for you guys...thanks for this one..🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
Beautiful family and scenery ! I can't believe how the children have grown up !
I love getting notifications from this beautiful channel.
Yes
Great to see the sky at night lying down and to help along with a good sleep tranquil rain sound beats any sleeping drugs!
This has to be the most unique and tranquil place to stay I have seen! With the rain on the solarium, I don't know if I would get out of bed!
Oh my goodness, sooooo beautiful!!! You guys get to experience the coolest places, thank you so very much for having us right there with you, amazing as always!!!
After watching I feel that I’ve taken a vacation :)
saaame! I live in Quebec so I will most definitely check this place out.
@@missmurda90 please dooo... An record i need to experience this kinda Peace
Thank you for taking me back to Lake Saint-Jean .... such a beautiful part of Canada. Your children are growing up so fast!! Muchos saludos desde Mexico. xo
This was amazing, thank you for sharing this. I don't want to bore you, I am from Maine, French Canadian, I almost married a hockey player from way up there, I was young and wild, came to Texas, now in my 60's, disabled and divorced, very alone, I could do this now as long as there is a wood burning stove going 😁
Living in the dry southwest, it is wonderful to see lots water 💦. Thanks for the video.
I am watching your channel since long time ago, I was really surprise that you come to my home town Lac-st-jean!
Thank you! This one was wonderful. So well done. Kayaking in the dark must have been a challenge, as is herding 3 tired children to get ready. It brings back many memories for me. atb
Different style video. One of my favourites so far.
Love seeing you in Canada, in the water with the kids
You’re like the Wild Thornberry’s but instead of traveling to study animals you study architecture lol. Those kids are growing up living an amazing life.
Until one day something AMAZING happened... And now I can talk to furniture!
@@crazymrcake 😂😂😂😂
Thanks. That was such a sweet little trip. I really loved it. ❤️
This part of the world is beautiful to behold, thank you so much for the video, taking those with you so to speak as you explore!! 🌸💐🌸
Out of hundreds of videos I watched on this channel, this one is special :) Thank you for sharing this!
Kirsten I’ve been watching you for years, since college. I love watching you bring your kiddos along. I decided to watch you tonight because we’ve been having a hard time. Your videos put me in a good place. ❤️
🥰Adore this: children playing cards instead of on phones, being a family, interacting with nature...
It’s something normal...
Ferd Ferd.D ?
How playing cards indoors is interacting with nature?

You never played family games on the Wii? Every Christmas we get together for that. This idea that non electronic things are somehow objectively more healthy is bs.
I want to live on that little cabin full time. I would never get tired of the quiet .
I was going nutzoid over all the things I needed to respond to and I took a break to watch this video and it was like for a moment catching my breath and getting some sanity. I cannot thank you enough for sharing this video. Someday you'll have to make a video about how you keep family and friend connections.
As a kid in Mississippi growing up we would spent many days out on the rivers to houseboat ...I miss canoeing 😎 ours though was a full wooden structure floating on barrels we had boat batteries for lights, bucket style composting toliet, and bunkbeds.
I always enjoy your videos Kirsten but this one i hold close to my heart. Not only this is my native land that you showcased here but i was stunt when i realize that you where at the Auberge des Iles de St Gedeon. This was originally my grand fathers in the 40's. The little shack where they now rent the Kayaks was my fathers summer cottage. Back then there was no big building like today, only little summer cottages to rent on the property. I still have one of the original bed covers from that time. I will show my 78 year old father this video. Maybe one day i will rent that floating cottage, thank you.
wow . these could be all over wild lakes and we'd never know . pedal/paddle kayaks would be great help for the long trek 💦 Thanks Dirksen Fam
Reminds me of the Cars 1 animated movie where the little town was dying due to cars traveling to get somewhere faster instead of traveling to see where they were traveling through. The canoe is not Lightning McQueen (representing speed) but they are a bit like Mater the old tow truck who enjoyed simple things which instilled joy. The sounds of the wildlife were wonderful and peaceful.
🤗🤗🤗
Big fan of these Family centered videos! MORE OF THESE!
Really appreciate your channel Kirsten. Its good, great to not have a nasaly over compensating chad speaking like a cartoon robot asking endless and rhetorical un interesting questions about the structures. Mostly its just great that this channel, and its proprietor.. is just her self. something I desire more and more these days.
Kirsten, congratulations on your feature in the November 2019 issue of Vanity Fair! Great picture of you and the family!
Nothing like a relaxing holiday - taking it easy and letting the staff do all the work - Ahhh what i have to paddle myself, where's the motor boat, nothing like the Maldives.
Great video and audio quality - just watching makes you feel like you're there :D
That's I call life my friend God bless you and your family.
Four people in a green house on a river, lets talk condensation.

I couldn't even imagine being in that little glass house when it gets sunny and hot. But with the rain it was great.
Magnificent bird and rain sounds, it's a dream to be in a place like this.
This video is so beautiful. It's like a movie. LOL
Thank you very much for sharing your uncommon and great adventure in the wild. Beautiful family!
Beautiful northern nature, a wonderful ecological house, a wonderful place for children. Everything is thought out to the smallest detail.
I was honestly a bit terrified for you guys.
yes. why go out so late?
you watch to many movies
I hope you really enjoy your trip in the Province of Quebec and to see you here back soon. Keep up your excellent work!
This looked like an awesome family adventure...Nice to see.
I love this concept, so peaceful and beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.
After high school graduation I agreed (with trepidation) for my daughter to take a portage with 5 other girls in Canada. I don't recall the business that puts it together. The girls traveled the waterways, carried their canoes on land, set up tents for night, and buried their trash. One girl had to lick up the jelly she dropped onto a rock (bears, you know), the girls endured a thunderstorm one night, and they even had to jump off a 35 foot cliff into the water below. Best thing I ever could have agreed to. So proud of her. Best experience for a young woman to gain for a life of confidence in herself!
VERY NICE ADVENTURE... be it for a couple or family... love being out in Nature! Thanks for sharing.
I love this video!! Thankyou for always keeping it real. And my goodness your kids are so blessed.
I enjoyed seeing your family, they all look very happy and it's awesome they get to experience these things. You rock!!!!!
absolutely beautiful and a wonderful way for your children to enjoy nature and the water!
Very peaceful surroundings and kayak on the water is calming for your soul.
Thanks for sharing.
I've heard of little adults like these children I've never thought i'd ever see them Why can't ALL kids be this well mannered?
Never thought they existed.. what a great job you're doing with them!
They picked it up from parents, children absorbs energy really well
The gentleman kayaker makes some good last points at the end of their journey - when you plan ahead you are closing windows; closing opportunities. If I try to recollect some of my most exciting moments they were unplanned - go with the flow - kinds of things...very relaxing and completely in the moment. Thanks for sharing
What a fun family, great parents. Thanks for sharing this with us.
While I was watching the Idaho Fire Station (what a neat woman and home) for some reason your lake house vacation kept popping into my mind. And then it popped up at the end, SO I'm watching it again! Love this.
Oh my gosh, your babies have grown so much!!!! ❤️
Then it got dark...I thought they'll never find this place, that was a bit of a family adventure...
Yeah, seemed a bit risky taking three small children across a large lake at night.
@@andrewlm5677 water is as dangerous in the daylight
Personally it's not advisable to be going out on a kayak trip especially with kids for the first time after sunset on Waters that you've never been on ... especially if you have to be kayaking in unfamiliar Waters for at least 45 minutes after sundown.... just a word for the wise .
This would have made a really great movie where the people who told them where the barge is were criminals or murderers.... but something like this could become a true story to people who are not careful .
@@andrewlm5677 💯
Cool use of a solarium ! Think I’ll put one on a trailer and park it in the woods.
Indeed!
In the bushes your's will work on sunny days (unlike the barge one). I'm making a walk along camper with a completely transparent top and on sunny days I will be able to easily move it to shade. Look on RUclips "Funky Wagon" if you want to see it (numbered videos).
So awesome! I need a floating cabin!!
She is now officially a teenage 😅
Just love every single one of your videos
This place reminds me of and is so similar to when we would visit my Uncle and his family in Nominingue, Quebec, Canada 🇨🇦. My Mother's side of the family, including my Mother and me, are French Canadians. We would visit my Uncle and we would go to the big lake and swim. When we were in our teens we were avid canoers 🛶 and go portaging with the canoe from lake to lake carrying the canoe and our camping and fishing equipment until we reached the next lake and then load our canoes again. Eventually, we would find a place to camp and set up for the evening and stay a few days. No one could get to us via roads because in that part of Quebec there are so many lakes connected by little pieces of land. My Uncle worked for the Provincial Park system and they could only keep up so many trails, cabins, and camping sites. Therefore, people could always canoe and portage from one lake to another and find a place that would be just for them! 🏕️
Amazing the vastness of this location.
Oh how lovely.....Such a peaceful, wonderful vacay
I lived in Maine for a while and this reminds me of the beauty. Kayaking is a great way to travel by water
Very inspirational channel and a cool little retreat spot. Liked the philosophical comments about goal orientated life versus life as it is without timekeepers etc.
2:25 Igloft ..IMPRESSIVE. 8:17, what the title is about. Style and practicality. Two of the most inspirational designs I've ever seen.
As the sun sets, the family heads out to a deserted island only to find it---- haunted. Love your Barbara Kruger shirt! This is sure a getaway! I mean, you can't even go buy a coke at the 7-11.
This felt like the beginning of a "found footage" style horror movie (Like Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity)...... Whatever you do, DON'T EVER go in the woods!! 😳😱😬 lol
Must be great at night when it rains.
A bit cold in winter ?
Of all your adventures this was the craziest
What an amazing way for those kids to grow up! World travellers with great family connectedness.
Can't believe you let out so late in the day!
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
So very cool - you could even grow food this way - in a greenhouse barge!!!
Wow...canada as the second biggest country in the world...i wish to visit someday..ur so lucky to see different countries by vlogging☺nice cabin...just dont run out of food if u plan to stay long..its a bit far to kayak.
Thank you for the vid.
Important to show these places. Awesome.
What a great little place how quaint and peaceful
Your kids are amazing!
11:16 she said its easier than flushing a toilet. I rolled my eyes and let out a laugh.
LOL I know! I get it: it's easy to use a composting toilet. Easier than a traditional one? nop, don't stretch it ;)
Sometimes this channel has a tendency to 'oversell' certain features or places.
Where is this heaven? I want to come and kayak with my own sit in and sleep with my tent on each of those tiny islands.
I stand corrected she obviously had a guide which then makes it much safer and more fun
This is so calming
Hmmm...Awesome! I really enjoyed that!
Very cool thank you for taking this on your adventure 👍😁👌
