One of the best gay movies I've ever seen! It's a testament to these three because they had to be incredibly comfortable in their masculinity to play these ladies!
ESPECIALLY in the early 90's... it would have been brave of any of them to play a gay character in any context at the time, but to play a drag queen was taking it a step further! And they all took it very seriously too, even shadowing real life drag queens to learn what drag life is really like.
I remember reading an article after the film was released; it may have been an interview with the director - but he said that Wesley had a little ritual where he burned his "gender bender" once the shoot was over. Haha!
Thank you! I always tell people who haven't seen it. That these men dedicated their work bc they wanteded it to be right. They had a lot of research and training from real drag queens.
They wanted you to laugh with them not at them. Such a great well acted hilarious film.
And let's not forget the cameos of Robin Williams and RuPau. l.

I always thought this movie was a particularly bold career move from both Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes, especially in 1995 and given their work before that. This trailer sets it up beautifully.

I've seen this by accident when I was just a closeted 8-10 year old and I beg you not, this movie made me realize at that age that being gay is okay and my life should be celebrated not hibernated
That's great. This movie speaks to a lot of people in a lot of different situations and ways. It was more then just a movie..it was a celebration at a time when it was not common to see drag Queens being anything other then the butt of jokes.

That's great to read. As a straight man who grew up in a very sexist country, I believe watching this movie, when I was at that age as well, also helped me realize that. It humanizes people who do drag in a great and funny way.

Saw this for rhe first time yesterday and was DELIGHTED. I felt it was an incredibly respectful portrayal of drag, with complex character stories, and an amazing message about community.

I'm watching lately movies with Swayze and this one was a stupendous surprise. I thought the idea - three drag queens travel to Hollywood will be something light, aiming at humour and entertaiment yet it touches some really serious topics, gives happy ending to each unhappy character. This is one beautiful movie. It was great to watch, great to be surprised by how it developed. And watching Swayze as this classy lady... extraordinary, like ... wow! ... he got into his character with all the body language - if I wasn't that struck by the story i would be recommending to watch this movie even just to see him as Vida Boheme.
No one saw the detour coming, which would awaken them, and not making it to h'wood. :)
It's 2:03 a.m. Wednesday, March 15th 2023 & I'm watching this right now and it never gets old.

John Leguizamo os just underrated, he brought real emotion to life in this film. Besides, I think drag came very natural to Swayze, he definitely pulled it off with a great deal of authenticity. Snipes was trying a bit too hard in my opinion. He was obviously supposed to be the hilarious part of the trio and kind went overboard with it. I liked seeing him in drag for a change, yet he mostly sticked to the stereotypical black chick - trope, you know! Anyhow, great film!
It's crazy how we are moving backwards. This was released in 1995 and now....we are banning cross dressing, banning books and trying to pray the gay away. The 90s were so much better!
So true. There was so much queer culture celebrated and accepted. It was still tough, don't get me wrong - idk whether I was stupid as a kid or something because I had no idea it was possible for ME or my family to be trans or gay, but I grew up with Madam, Dame Edna, Priscilla Queen of the Desert (I literally wore my VHS copy out as a young kid!), Madonna, Annie Lennox, and more people who transcended gender roles. Anyone who was against all this beautiful stuff was laughed at, because it was art, culture, innovation. Of course there was the horrible side, because I also grew up in the shadow of HIV and gay bashing, and legal oppression, but it was never considered that strange that a little girl would be fascinated with Rupaul or insist on watching Dame Edna stand-up.

Honestly, this is a must-see movie for anybody who is into the art of drag, and a sad reminder that we've somehow reversed back to a more hateful time. If this movie was released today, there'd be protests at movie theatres up the ass by idiot "children protectors" who...get this... don't have to let their kids see it, especially since it'd be an R-rated movie.
You’re thinking is wrong, if it’s rated R then any parent worth their salt wouldn’t take Children to see it. And their wouldn’t be protests. There is no hate, but parents are tired of seeing kids subjected to the LGBT by having drag queen read to them for story hour and so forth. If you have any decency at all. You would see that having kids twerking in pride parades is wrong and that’s the problem.
