Everybody always says get out of the water if you see any of these signs of riptide. But, nobody ever adds. If it's already to late and you're being dragged out, don't swim against it. Swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the current. You'll wear yourself out trying to swim against it.
Happens on lake Michigan. I'm in SW Michigan. We even have signs everywhere, teaching about the rip tides. The tourists never listen. And the Chicago side rarely has RIP tides, so they think they're safe on this side. there's even an app for your phone that alerts rip currents. Thanks for listening. Have a good night.
Another thing to know: not all riptides work like that where you can swim parallel, some actually move with the beach and then circle out and into the ocean, and there is also the added factor of tide, some tides also work along the coastline and can work against your attempted escape, so in some cases it’s a 50/50 that this will work.
I saw the bodies of a father & daughter get dragged out of a beach cause they didn't listen to the signs and they got dragged out to sea and drowned likely from exhaustion. I think they were dead by the time the wife even realized they were missing....scary stuff. I got caught in a riptide along with a couple others at a beach when I was 9 yrs old, I just floated on my back while crying until folks on jetskis came along. One of them was probably a family member of another, because he slapped him so hard I'll never forget the echo it made :P
@@GeorgeTooCur1ous He was angry/afraid because many many kids die at that beach every year (this is in Morocco, people are a bit more handsy, or at least were). I saw a video about this once and a while ago I saw this phenomenon in Lake Michigan. I never thought I would see it in person since I thought you could only see it along the ocean shore.
Waves generally do not indicate the direction of current flow. They follow the direction of the wind or disturbance that created them in the first place. So if you see wavefronts crossing at 90 degrees, or at any other angle... it most likely means that two boats recently passed you.
That's dead right. That's not the explanation in the photos, (those wave sequences probably originate from distant storms in two mutually perpendicular directions, or more likely one set of very clean swells from such a storm refracted by passing two different bottom contours, one off to each side or by passing an island and refracting around the far side)... but in NO case of wave trains at or close to 90 degrees is it about currents (contrary to what the dude narrating the clip says, he clearly knows sweet FA about the topic)
You can get individual pyramid shaped waves, or a few in close proximity, as a result of currents, but not regular, sharply defined, identical instances happening over large areas as in the clip.
I live in Deleware and downstate on the coast this is literally all the waves look like. It’s all of our common rivers and large sources of water flowing into the bay and crossing over to the Atlantic 😘
I experienced this on Oahu. I noticed the odd waves and decided to try snorkeling but immediately turned around because it was hard fighting the waves getting pulled all over the place and it was too shallow.
The square waves signify that two people are playing Battleship nearby, and you're on their grids. So you should probably leave before you are accidentally struck.
They're very common in my home area in remote Ireland, where a long bank of cliffs jut straight out perpendicular to the beach. Strong riptides form like these waves, as the currents of waves rolling into the beach interact with those returning from the cliffs. Pretty, but very dangerous.
I’m just being Mrs Boring, and staying out. I’ll admire the mighty beauty while I read a book on the shore. Praise God for amazing creation and I ain’t ready for that might. I’ll rest in His grace while I fill my brain with more knowledge. Thank you Jesus for the beautiful water & land! And for our friends who share wisdom to us to be careful ❤
There's a lot wrong here. Swell direction =/= current direction. Swimming against currents going in opposite directions would actually be easier, because they'd cancel out. The real reason to be cautious of square waves is that they'll constructively interfere with each other, and wall up when they break. This video doesn't say that or really even help you identify danger in the ocean.
Everybody always says get out of the water if you see any of these signs of riptide. But, nobody ever adds. If it's already to late and you're being dragged out, don't swim against it. Swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the current. You'll wear yourself out trying to swim against it.

I experienced this on Oahu. I noticed the odd waves and decided to try snorkeling but immediately turned around because it was hard fighting the waves getting pulled all over the place and it was too shallow.
I used to travel through one often in a small boat as well as Plum Gut

The thought of swimming in the ocean is already terrifying. Square waves or handshakes.
If you see square waves, you're swimming across lines of longitude and latitude. No need to worry... maybe.
If you see the square wave interference pattern, you likely aren't in the water yet anyway as it requires a perspective above the water.
