Amber, can you do a video or talk just on adenosine? I've been curious about this chemical for a while so would love to hear your thoughts on it.

I have heard that ketone metabolism produces fewer ROS than glucose metabolism. If that’s true and ROS accumulation drives the need for sleep, it would make sense for a ketogenic diet to lower the need for sleep.

I've slept really well since starting keto / carnivore in January 2017... but I've had a couple dozen nights where I had trouble sleeping and resorted to eating some carbs, which quickly put me to sleep. Also, I'm using insulin for muscle growth and I inject it using white rice (I eat some rice). Since I just lift weights once a week (which is plenty in my experience), I only have 24 to 36 hours per week eating rice (with lean beef) right after heavy lifting. I feel like I'm back in ketosis in a day or two. This has really lowered by body fat (which was already low) after just a couple months. Something about an occasional insulin spike I believe encourages your muscles to take up more energy and so burn more fat (when fat is the fuel). The logic behind this is, when you eat keto for a long time, muscles become insulin resistant in order to spare glucose for red blood cells (& perhaps some brain cells)... the evidence supporting the logic is that people on keto for years seem to have their blood glucose levels creep up in the 120s from initially starting in the 70s. Hit muscles with insulin briefly, say, weekly, and it perhaps removes the insulin resistance, as well as produces some muscle growth, which in turn burns more calories, which will be fat calories during the remaining 5 or 6 days of the week on zero carb.

The insulin from eating protein is adequate to build muscle. If you release more by eating carbs it won't trigger more muscle synthesis.

I'm doing animal-based (with carbs) and I only get 5-6 hours a night. I wake up anywhere between midnight and 04 WIDE awake. What can I do to get more sleep?

"Low fiber and high saturated fat and sugar intake is associated with lighter, less restorative sleep with more arousals." Conclusion from "Fiber and Saturated Fat Are Associated with Sleep Arousals and Slow Wave Sleep"
    Marie-Pierre St-Onge et al, J Clin Sleep Med. 2016 Jan;12(1):19-24.
    Not great news for carnivores.

"Higher percent of energy from sugar and other carbohydrates not considered sugar or fiber was associated with arousals (P = 0.0320 and 0.0481, respectively)."
TBH that study is way too short to draw any conclusions in any way. Not to mention day 4, they had disturbed sleep with blood drawing but assumed that made no difference on day 5. A quick look also didn't highlight what was consumed on the ad libitum days nor when, on days 1-4 meals were provided at 19:00 at the latest. Nor was performance of the participants measured before and after to see any effect of differing sleep patterns.
edit: also, the biggest effect on sleep in that study seems to be just being male, but surely they were males before the ad libitum day too?
edit 2: just for reference the actual results from the study: jcsm.aasm.org/cms/asset/16e1832e-d27f-4e1c-87c7-9ed1b2ee9a87/jcsm.12.1.19.t02.jpg

I'm on LCHF since 2003, and I can tell I my sleep improved a lot with LCHF. The only time in my life I had comparable sleep was during childhood and in the early youth.
It's like black and white. And the same thing happened to all the people I brought to LCHF during my days as a Lowcarb-coach.
There are a few biochemical reasons why this is unavoidable.

She is carnivore for 10 years and looks the same as ppl on vegan diet for 10 years. Like real unhealthy.

What a terrible thing to say about someone. I mean I'm not interested in investing in divisiveness with you here, but I am curious, is there a specific aspect of her looks that definitively demonstrates poor health? I mean she looks to be of a normal weight, no way there's an argument for notable defect in percentage body fat. Something about her looking tired, maybe? Could it be she procrastinates and was up late working on this presentation, or has anxiety & doesn't sleep well before presentations? I mean isn't your whole judgment here extraordinarily anecdotal as far as determining the cause of anything? Again, this is just to get a beat, I personally love people including you even if your sense for enrichment in life is frivolously presenting dissent in a manner that is far too unstructured to be respected as an argument & provides heavy insult in the meanwhile. Or maybe you're just trolling and then your enrichment is just saying things that hurt people. Which as it all measures out is a pretty meaningless life, so I'll just assume the former. Anyway, I'm all ears, literally made of ears, tell me what significant aspect of her appearance can clearly establish a link to poor health.

@@MeanderingPathos I think you gotta be some kind of a jerk to point out these things, but there's a kernel of truth in the OP's comment. I think she's an attractive woman, but throughout her entire public history she's had what looks like keto eyes. Maybe it's genetic and completely unrelated to her diet. Maybe it's because she doesn't sometimes wear make-up and our perception of physical beauty is skewed in that regard. She also does not have an energetic personality, which may contribute to the perception of her physical appearance. Just as her intellect may make me think she's more attractive.
But let's keep in mind that it's a cottage industry on YT for carnivores and keto advocates to disparage the appearance of vegans (often with good reason, IMO). And the vegans are always slagging off the meat eaters. It's nothing new and it doesn't originate with YT commenters.

@@MeanderingPathos she wouldn't be on a carnivore diet (as most ppl on a vegan diet, both are extreme forms!) if she hadnt had health issues before. q.e.d. if want and no rational scientist would agree that any extreme form of diet is healthy. Both diets btw, carnivore/keto and vegan dont work without supplementation, that is often something carnivores are silent about especially when their favourite example of inuit falls off. and I'm not talking looks either, idc if she wears make up, but she is unenergetic, pale, has more adipose tissue than she should on a carnivore diet (maybe not regarding general guidelines, but those are flawed anyways). I could count on, but I'm honestly too lazy for this. It's also not to discredit her achievements or carnivore itself, those things are good and for are reason gain attention by science now.

    • @MeanderingPathos

@@wodzefag8062 I didn't get any impression of her being unenergetic, her personality seems an entirely normal level of energy. And her skin looks like pale white because it is pale white, that's a type of skin color, I see that in the world in droves. Not convincing examples. Where are you seeing excess adipose tissue? How are you determining this? Did you sit with a physician and discern the appropriate body fat percentage then calculate hers & find her outside of an appropriate threshold. Listen, if you're too lazy to offer something meaningful to say, then what you have to say is not meaningful. Do you understand how that works? There are schools of thought in nutrition & contention between. Your contribution wasn't useful in the midst of it, at all.
