Flat plane V8 - sounds like a 4 cal
cross plane 4 - sounds like a V8
Except a Ford Mustang GT350. I wish they can make flat 4's at least sound like that !!!
@@user-fi1xu1pp7p the gt350 has uneven length exhaust headers. if you put equal length headers on it'll scream like a ferrari v8
@@mr.petrolhead5432 So how does it affect the position of the cylinders UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN or UP, DOWN, DOWN, UP?
@@IzajResGS Beginning of time.
This is why I don't like flat plane V8
I wonder why it's never applied in automobiles? Just imagine a roaring cross-plane 4-cyl rally car!
Too much secondary vibrations in bigger engines i guess.
there are a few honda drag racers that have expiremented with cross planes, they sound like subaru. they are mainly on big turbo aplications, and crossplaning helps with turbo spool and actual rotational vibrations are down. but the lateral vibrations go way up.
It is used in the ford mustang gt.
The Mustang GT motor is just like almost every American V8, they are almost exclusively cross-plane. I can't think of any flat-plane V8 American cars besides the Shelby GT350.
@@A.J.1656 You can get Mustangs with cross plane or flat plane V8s.
God that Yamaha has an amazing, unique sound.
I had the Yamaha MT 10. I bought it specially for the crossplane engine. What a noise !
Imagine a dude in a gimp suit running off with your bike 😂
Imagine if civics sounded like this, amazing
Or Corollas.
Actually most 2 stroke 4 cylinders are cross plane. Its the smoothest layout for a 2 stroke
It’s the 4stroke cross plane that’s rare.
Great video thanks.
suzuki motogp engine currently, is also crossplane inline 4
sadly suzuki is almost not seen taking in motogp pole positions today..
Honda is also using it in MotoGP.
Honda is a V4. All MotoGP bikes now use a cross-plane firing order, but only Suzuki and Yamaha have an inline 4.
A H Doh! My mistake. They did switch from a screamer to big bang though.
Hi. It's not a cross plane. It's a I4.
2:28 i think the camera man described how we all feel about that noise
1:05 Sounds like the Tomahawk X VGT from GT6.
If it wasn't a V10 engine
The view through the windshield 1:35 heaven
2 stoke should not count, at crossplane is needed to have even fire intervals.
Yes, a crossplane on a 2 stroke I4 is as natural a choice as a flat plane for. 4 stroke I4 since both have evenly spaced ignition events. The crossplane 4 stroke I4 was dreamed up on the idea that the uneven firing might afford for a more progressive power-induced loss of traction after the same was noted for 270 degree twins vs 360 degree twins.
Took the words straight out of my mouth! 4 cylinder inline two stroke would be like having two 2 cylinder two strokes firing at the same time, that’s why the only ones made were square 4 or V4, the only way you could make an inline 4 two stroke work is the crossplane crank 👍
@@Buzdu22 But I think flat plane 2 stroke also work as 1,4 cylinder at tdc while 2,3 at bdc? That way there are 2 cylinders firing at the same time also.
L Adam it will work, but it is impractical and the inline 4 inherent secondary vibrations would increase as the engine would work exactly like a two cylinder because two cylinders fire at the same time, in pairs. Why make a more complex 4 cylinder, when you could have the same result with a two cylinder?
As far as I know there are no two stroke l4’s for this exact reason. A cross plane crank would make the l4 work in a two stroke, as it spaces out the firing intervals
@@Buzdu22 thanks for the reply as I read more comments then I realized the balance issue...
I thought Yamaha MotoGP has been using crossplane since 2004? Since Rossi said the "screamer" flat-plane was hard to handle, Yamaha opted for the "big bang" cross-plane instead...
There's one more that I know of - the Yamaha VMAX-4 snowmobile. I'm no expert but atleast some of them were built with a cross-plane crankshaft. Being a 4 cylinder 2 stroke, with that crank, they scream like an F1 car!
This is the crispiest R1 revs 0:59 recorded on youtube.
Thats how a 2L, 4cyl, car engine(VW ABA 16V) sounds with a cross plane crankshaft(exhaust sound at the end of the video): ruclips.net/video/oFHsl6TcKJM/видео.html
There's also a Fiat 147 drag car with a crossplane retrofit from Argentina.
the last engine remind me the BRM V16 note.. so lovely !
The video clip from the Fath-Kuhn URS running seemed like someone edited the footage and put a Nascar car's engine sound over the clip of the motorcycle running. It must have given goosebumps to the audience during the sessions, specially the BMW's employees haha
Cross-plane bikes are so cool
What the crossplane inline 4 really needs to shine is a true dual exhaust system. One pipe for 2 cylinders each.
THEN it sounds like a crossplane V8.
Love the fairbanks engines👍
There's a big twin cylinder 2 cycle diesel that get run at an engine show few times a year exhaust is as loud as black powder rifles.
yup 2 strokes are fun i have a yamaha 115cc 2 stroke moped...runs quick for its size..
@@fidelcatsro6948 you could fit whole 115cc engine into one cylinder of a 2 cycle Fairbank engine
ruclips.net/video/kWLLomHiFd8/видео.html
The engine had issues on right cylinder but it's been fixed since than
yeah they're both smoking puffing smoke just like my bike, 2 stroke syndrome
Can confirm the video does not truly show what the R1 sounds like. Can't wait to buy that bike next 😍
I am a helpless victim of the cross-plane sound; lured by the siren song of a harpy. Heck, I bought an R1 just so I could hear it wail, growl, and bellow all the time... it'll blow your balls off! With all electronics off, and full race mode on, wrangling that squirming monster will have you feeling like a beast.
I have a 2018 R1 I can vouch for its amazing sound.
I'm jealous!
@Siward Beorn Drugs. Not even once.
What the hell
I need to buy an r1 engine and install in my bandit 1200 as well....
sounds like three dirt bikes
all of detroit diesel 2stroke 4 cylinders are cross plane
0:45 the 2004 M1 was the first M1 to use crossplane crankshaft
Any 2 stroke inline four will have a crossplane crankshaft. I believe many more exist in snowmobiles and outboard engines.
It's funny how flat plane v8 sound better but cross plane 4cyl sound better
That old URS sure sounds good!
Truly baby v8😍😍 but what is the drawback of this baby v8??
Vibrations that need to be balanced out by use of heavier shaft
Having uneven fire order messes up the gas flow. Similar problems V8s have. It also has uneven power delivery.
Neither v nor 8
Typically also have less torque down low.
@@silverioarroyo5968 less?? Thought crossplane has more early torque than flatplane.. I'm confused
So I'm assuming that crossplane is that specific sound that we only here in moto gp & r1s
Kind of yes. The sound is a product of the piston phases (90° optimum) and those piston phases are selected for the way that any time a given piston is stationary, the other three are compensating for its fluctuating kinetic energy. This translates to less uncontrolled torque oscillation at the driven wheel at high rpm (required for high specific power output), which makes it easier to feel the limit of grip through the throttle, and should technically be kinder to the tyre for a given pace (although it's then easier to exploit the tyre more, so...). Modern traction control muddies this a bit, but it's telling that all but one of the engines on the grid this year (such that it is) are essentially cross-plane (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda) or almost cross-plane (Ducati, Aprilia) in terms of piston phases and resulting total kinetic energy oscillation.
The modern crossplane R1 is the best sounding modern motorcycle. Nobody can convince me otherwise.
Aprilia v4 is also Good
@@alexandergerst2288 the R1 has more resonance in my opinion, the RSV4 is too brappy for me
Too bad that this technology suffers from prejudice because it does not give the 4 cylinders its characteristic snore, but I love the sound
Finally man, VisioRacer , you are one of those youtubers who accepts that the crossplane doesn't have more advantages than a Traditional Flatplane crank , glad to see a ytuber who's not a Yamaha Simp😂.
deamn that firebanks sounds so cool!
Now if Yamaha could only make the CP4 function as it does, without sucking entire Texas oil wells dry in 50 miles.
Yeah... I know this feel.
170kms to a tank on a spirited ride is kinda annoying
I know it. And I've yet to hear a good technical explanation why this is, concerning the crossplane i-4. Just about everything else that makes similar power is getting 8-10 mpg better. 1290 Super Duke R even does better at 1301cc.
Yamaha in general had never been the name in fuel efficiency... but yeah these bikes are particularly bad hahah
There's Yamaha bikes that do very well in efficiency. All depends on which one. MT-07 makes best in class power and does as well or better than the rest.
Another very good video thanks for your time sending it out and it was very interesting
Someone needs to cross plane swap a Honda!
finally some torque!! oh wait a crossplane i4, not a 8 cylinder
insertrandomcleverusername I bet if you look around on the internet, you'll find some people doing so.
big red knows better. With tiny ass onboard the RC213v or whatever they call it, they are winning for years. Rossi may get yamaha to shape up
For this kind of sound, it's just easier to make unequal length headers. Search RUclips, it's been done! On a Civic and an Integra, I've seen (and heard) so far.
Bryan Liguori Yeah, you're right. Also, the Ford GT350R has unequal length headers and different piston timing on a flat-plane crank. It sounds mental!
Dude the first one and the last one are so sick
I would LOVE to see a 2L 4cyl turbo, must sound pretty damn insane :D
ay caramba 200hp from a natural aspirated 1 liter engine? thats insane!
Makes up by having no torque, 112 is a joke for a 1L engine.
Nathan Vonlanthen 112 nm is actually pretty good for a naturally aspirated 1 liter. Check for yourself. The maximum torque is delivered at a relatively high rpm though.
yes 112nm is higher than my bandito1200 only 100hp and 100nm...R1 will kick its butt and run round cat faced circles with a smiley!
Nathan you're forgetting that a bike weighs 200kg max - a car weighs atleast 6-7x as much.
My MT10 has a modified R1 engine for use in a naked sports bike.
I get powerful torque from 3000rpm onwards.
In fact, I've towed another bike with rope so it can easily lug half a tonne.
As many others said, nline four cylinders two strokes engines are made with a cross pane crankhaft, so a crankshaft with 90°shift between each crankpin. I am sure that you can find many others, it's a common solution. It's uncommon only in 4 stroke engines. Remember that Yamaha motogp is struggling with power also because of their crankshaft.
Man is this such a good collection of sounds.
Anything is possible, just dont let people say it isn't
That Yamaha... God damn, best sounding 200hp ever. All I-4s should use this arrangement. If the balance is so damn bad, how does it rev to a zillion rpm like that? Would be no problem in a relatively low-revving car
Those 2 stroke detroit diesels also have cross plane crankshafts in their inline 4 variants.
So do some older tractors
But on a two stroke you'd still have even pulses so I don't think that really counts
@@carlosandleon It does, because Yamaha and URS did not adopt the configuration for its sound.
Might want to check out the Lister JP3 and JP4
So there is a way to make inline 4's sound good then!
Crossplane in two stroke are equivalent to a regular plane four stroke engine.
Awesome video
i really has that old f1 feel to it on these bikes
This kind of engine would be awesome as the base engine in a muscle car
Excellent channel, always informative and interesting
The Fairbanks Morse opposed piston submarine engine was their greatest engine. Thousands were sold after World War II in Surplus sales and were used to pump up natural gas lines. They're just having to get rid of them now because of the EPA.
The last one sounds similar to nascar's FR9
Rakeim S. I thought that too. Like the only one that really had a v8 sound
I need that last engine in a sleeper mini car!! Lolz
Nah, even a mini car wouldnt be a sleeper with 80 hp
@@dyllongeckles2122 I'm sure a modern remake will make much much more! 😅😅 Just wishing it would make the same sound 😄😆
4 banger ms FTW.😎💪🏼 N/A or Force induction.
Imagine how a crossplane cb250rr would sound
It's all inline 4s. Yeah! My fav
Atleast someone should have made 4 cylinder diesel engines with such crank arrangement
speaking of which, i think Suzuki used crossplane crank for GSX RR before they sadly pulled out of MotoGP again.
Cara,eu aqui no Brasil curto muito seu trabalho, mesmo sem entender nada kkkkk
Somos dois
Eu curto bastante, só que entendedo
Mercury 4 cylinder 2 stroke outboard from the 1990’s run cross plane cranks. 100hp + 115hp & 125hp.
MT-10 also...yes an R1 pricepoint spinoff but nevertheless its own model
it really is the natural way in a 2 strokes inline 4
Sounds like a Subaru boxers!
Those are amazing. I hate the sound of flat plane fours. At least the Subaru boxer sounds reasonably ok.
Don't 4 cyl Detroit Diesel engines have a cross plane crank? For a 2 stroke engine it would be logical.
Yes, I also know he left out the 4 cylinder 2 stroke found in the Yamaha VMAX-4 snowmobiles. I'm sure there's a few other crossplane i4's left out of this video...
The last one sounds like a NASCAR
You can add one more engine to the list as Garage 54 just modified a Lada engine with cross-plane cranks. 😏
hey~ you got a bike! sweet brah
Ok sir
If i owned a car brand in the early 2000s, first thing id do is start putting these cranks in every economic engine. Make them less boring sounding
Imagine a cheap compact car using a crossplane i4 sounding like a LS V8 lol
F1 may going to use crossplane 4 cylinder in future
What about Detroit 4-53? It should be a crossplane in order to have even firing order.
They are...as far as I remember
2 stroke....
4-53 & 4-71 true
Will that Fairbanks Morse engine fit in my Civic?
civic fits in morse, so thats the same thing
The *Fath-Kuhn URS* sounds like a small and slow *Yamaha YZF-R1/MT-10.* Interesting.
Even more interesting is the engineer responsible for the URS engine "invented" the crossplane concept (more accurately, he paid attention to the concept of flywheel sizing and the first principles of piston motion, as adhered to in the steam era - two cylinder steam locomotives were crossplane!!), at least as far as Yamaha describe it reducing torque oscillation in the drivetrain. He went one step further and eliminated some of the torsion and crankcase breathing issues that Yamaha had to battle with in the early years of their crossplane unit.
Just goes to show that industry inertia, big egos and a predisposition for voodoo over basic education all slow progress significantly. Yamaha introduced their crossplane engine 16 years ago, and only Ducati followed suit initially, Suzuki also adopted it on their return. Two years ago Honda adopted it, and this year Aprilia did. That leaves only KTM in the old school of thought, that is of neglecting the even older school of thought...
I think the Pontiac Le Mans had a crossplane 4 cyl.
Its a keeper
And don't forget two strokes, the Yamaha VMax 4, TZ750, etc.
Vmax has a V4 not an inline 4, and it's regular for a two stroke to have a crossplane
Vmax kitty is a 4 stroker..not 2 stroke...2 stroke 4 cylinders have to be cross plane because 2 strokes fire at every revolution instead of 4strokes that fire only at every 2 revolutions...if you made flat plane 2 strokes for 4 cylinders its going to thump very hard like a single or twin cylinder and shake the ground and loosen the nuts and bolts..
The VMax 4 is a two stroke snowmobile...
The second one doesn't count. 'Cause for the 2-stroke straight four cross plane crank is natural, in order to make even firing order (every 90°).
i wish they made 600cc crossplane i4 bike
Didn’t Fords ecoboost 2.3 inline 4 and Shelby’s GT350 use flat plane crankshafts?
Yes, the Voodoo 5.2 liter V8 has a flat plane crank. It "shakes" like two four cylinders connected in a Vee
Yamaha is legand for a reason.
Nice!
Hops !! Muscle car Dodge vsvs 🤔
I have a r1 and a fairbanks Morse electric motor on my lathe.
Suzuki told a magazine they considered putting one in the new gsxr 1000. They use ine in their motogp bike.
that fath-kuhn doesnt quite sound like the yam, nor does it sound quite like a V4.
That’s a 2015 or so R1M in the video. The 2005 would of still had wasp eyes
In lower rpm, that first BMW sounded like a v8
Yamaha R1's have a crossplane i4 now.
The closest sound you could get to this in a car would be Subaru's
Not really, i see what you mean, but subies have a normal firing order for a 4 cylinder, just the same as all other 4 cylinders, but the cylinders are 180° from each other, and so is the crank positions.
RX-7 Rotary Engine is the closest sound 😂😂
I think the Ford V4 would be closer.
I'm not sure but A110 sounds like cross-plane.
there's also old honda race bike RC 163 using cp firing order, and current GSX-RR
The RC163 is a flat plane engine. The exhausts are separated such that you hear the 180 pairs, a lot like a boxer four. If you separate them even further, you start to approach the crossplane sound. But that requires some silly differences in exhaust primary lengths (/ tip locations) that usually don't fit on a bike or in a car. And it only works in a specific rpm range even then.
Motus bikes have a cross plane v4
That's different, it's _almost_ crossplane. More like the Ducati V4 and the new Aprilia MotoGP engine. A true crossplane V4 would have e.g. common crankpins separated by 180 degrees in a 90° V angle (Honda). The Motus has a 90° V, sure, but the crank is something like 75°, similar to the Ducati's 70°. My guess is the Aprilia is a 60° crank.
The guy who speaks in these videos sounds like Fes
Cuh, imagine if we only got 5934nm of torque from 171 litre engines now days.
cross plane 4 cylinders, so lets take a jack rabbit and see what happens if we make it move more like a caterpillar.
