Very hackable LED star light.

  • This light has a lovely modular construction that makes repairs and customisation very easy.
    It uses standard luxeon star style LEDs with good heatsinking.
    The power supply is a little shady in terms of isolation and the way it is sleeved and stuffed inside the ungrounded housing. It also uses a surface mount capacitor in a class Y situation. I'm not sure how well that is suited to the task as the capacitor is between the mains and low voltage side.
    Searching eBay for LED star sconce light will pull up quite a lot of different listings including these.

    This concept gives me a world of ideas, such as increasing the number of LED modules around the unit, and programming them to project certain RGB colors and make effects.

    Easy way to make it 12V is to use one of the step-up type constant current supplies that are used in MR16 style 12V LED bulbs. I made a nice caravan ceiling light like that, using seven 1W neutral white leds (the star type) in series on a circular piece of steel (cut from the case of an old CD ROM drive). Current turned down slightly and compensated by using more LEDs than needed (while giving a bit of headroom above 12V for the step up type supply while being used with a vehicle supply).

  • @andydelarue9344
    @andydelarue9344 4 года назад

    Excellent work hoppie, working well in low light. You can also stop it flashing in the bright light but tricking the camera with a neutral density filter over the lens.

    Nice little unit there. More expensive, but then again, you get what you pay for, and that looked good. I'd personally convert it to 12V DC supply, and those LEDs are super modular. Could have it as warm white, could have it as cool white, could have it multicolored, could have color changing :)

    Wanted to make sure you saw this so double posting..
    Just wanted to say thanks for all your solar light and 18650 videos. Because of everything ive learned I was able to modify the big solar light I have on the side of my house to make it so I can manually charge it with a USB power bank/USB Charger via a TP4056 Charging/Protection Board, I connected a long enough 22AWG wire so that I could charge it from the ground instead of always having to take the light off the wall which always requires a ladder to do. In addition to that I was also able to change the battery as I found the quick connect adapter the original battery uses on Amazon. Because of all this i'll probably try modifying some other solar lights I have so they can also be more useful during the Winter.
    So thanks again and thanks to @Siana Gearz for pointing me in the direction of the board.
    I hope this also would be an interesting project for you to do as you tend to be Sun limited and it would help any of your solar lights to still be useful during day light restricted days.

    The lens is a TIR lens - which I find fascinating. I think that they are very efficient.
    Some of the TIR manufacturers make multi-head TIR configurations that will allow 7 LEDs side by side, all oriented parallel. I think the intended use would be individual colors that can then be combined and tweaked to give very exact color matches.

    • @superdau
      @superdau 4 года назад +2

      Same in Austria from next year on. I wouldn't mind the 20% tax on everything imported (it's only fair for competition considering you have to pay that if you buy within the EU; and the chinese sellers really overdid it with cheating on the customs declaration). But postal services will collect a 10€ "customs handling fee" no matter the value of the package. That pretty much kills all China orders for me.
      My hope is that when this happens for all of the EU in 2021 the Chinese still want to sell their stuff in the EU (it's more than half a billion people after all) and start opening up EU warehouses. Sure the choice will be more limited and it won't be as cheap as directly from China, but on the other hand items should arrive much faster and you get the quite good consumer protection that's mandatory in the EU.

      @GothBoyUK 4 года назад +4

      Bit like the UK Royal Mail who will happily slap circa £8 handling charge on anything they deem to be worth more than £15, even if taxes were pre-paid or not required. I recently got sent something from the USA worth next to nothing (about £1) but because the *postage* was £14 they charged tax & fees on the whole thing. I once had an item with a 1p customs import tax & (IIRC) £11 handling fee from Parcelforce (part of the Royal Mail at the time). Hate them all. 😒

    • @johncrowerdoe5527
      @johncrowerdoe5527 4 года назад

      Depends on actual waveform. Some will heat the neutral wire via 3rd harmonics adding up. Ultimately the reactive or capacitive current will circulate between the gadgets and the distribution transformer causing higher resistive losses in that loop corresponding to the what would have been wasted transporting that many amps of real load, but the reactive watts themselves should cancel out somewhere.

      Description says hallway of a disco. So in style but not blinking and rotating.
      Other mounting options:
      1. Remove one LED and screw onto standard lamp (same thread).
      2. Attach Earth wire to any screw in the metalwork for proper grounding.
      3. Run from battery system to provide emergency lighting in Disco hallway.

    Having issues hearing you on this video. Audio seems quite a bit lower then your Norm. Supersizing how well build this lamp seems to be . A lot of Machining for such a simple lamp.

      I was testing other recording devices. Also check your sound settings. Dolby hates me and tends to put my audio out to centre speakers that may be missing.

    • @Peter_S_

      The camera had less light to work with so it switched to a longer exposure time. That made the camera work more like your eyes and the flicker disappears.
