My late husband died and amongst other things I had a collection of mint vintage DINKY and CORGI die cast cars many in their original boxes that he had collected over 50yrs. I knew NOTHING about...AT ALL. So, I placed them all in a vintage toy auction and after three months I managed to sell everything. The most ONE car went for was £978 and it went to Australia.

I was thinking the same thing. I remember a traveling convention vendor was selling his left overs on Facebook market, Amazon Market place, E-Bay. and Macari because he was getting to old to travel from convention to convention like he did back in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. The majority of the models were Sci-Fi like Star Trek this was back in 2018 as you know Star Trek is dying so is it's fan base. I ended up buying Jem'Hadar attack fighters model set and a Lt. Commander Data model figurine from him.

it shows the problem that face this kind of items collectors ( I am one ).It is because the models are stowed in ours homes or garages like cans of beverage; You don't have time to appreciate each of them, and think a moment, in a quiet ambient, about the historical situation in which each model has been living . That's why I am limiting to a collection of 1967 year racing cars ( around 450 cars ) and have stopped to collect . Models cars are nor like LP or CD records, you can't listen to them, but only look at them . So the display on correct and large places is the only way to look with love and admiration at them. I will never sell my collection, and I suspect those who do it is related to the fact they don't have the time to look at each model, not to say to touch them. After a while, they say in their mind : " time to sell the collection "
Collection are for dreamers, not for stowage managers !

4 years late but will share for anyone that finds themselves in a similar situation, gondola shelving. Common to find at store closing auctions. Picked up (136) 4 ft wide, 6 ft tall, double sided, with average of 4 shelves per side for $400. Easy to setup. Easy to adjust the shelves. Great way to get things out of the box and organize it for sale. Year later I bought a second lot of them just for additional shelves. (260) shelves for $175.

The Randy Pratl collection that recently has been selling from an auction house is probably the biggest and best one I've known of. Having attended toy car shows for years in this area and knowing the guys and ages of some of the collectors, I think it's safe to say there will be a quite a few more amazing toy car collections up for sale in the next 10 to 20 years.

    Two points:
Point one: Congrats to the fella. A year or so ago, a friend of mine connected me with her friend who has recently lost her brother. Her brother had approximately 400 1/18 and 50 1/24 diecast cars. Almost all were unboxed and "dusty" did not begin to describe the condition. Her friend had been told by others that she was sitting on a gold mine. I did a quick perusal and saw nothing high end. I considered purchasing the collection, but didn't want to insult her. I only got called because I collect diecast. I am NOT an appraiser. I wondered what would've been a fair price, considering my time. Haul the collection home (unboxed!), clean every single one, buy shipping boxes/packing materials, compose the ads , box 'em up and send 'em out, praying like the dickens they get there in one piece. Then sigh as eBay takes 10%. Little by little, that profit gets eaten away. At $1 and change per car, this guy has some wiggle room. I think she thought she was sitting on tens of thousands of dollars. I didn't have the heart to tell this lady that if anyone offered her anything close to a grand, she should take it and RUN.
Point two: I specifically collect Aussie stuff and was surprised to see he had some. I would've loved to bid, but his starting prices for those pieces were way too high for me.

Yeah I feel kind of bad for them too but honestly like if you can't afford to pay your bills but can afford to blow it all on this stuff in the first place you kind of deserve to lose it. Who knows man maybe the person died, like we have no idea. I can't imagine someone would just let it all go, they clearly had the resources to buy it all in the first place and not only that but to organize it as well as they did. I bet the person simply passed away or something.

...vintage as in < 80s? or 70s?..........just wondering

    • @tootall5559

@@wesweatyoushop2556 Diecast models go way back. they began in the early part of the 20th century, I can't find accurate info on exactly when or what company was first to the market with them. Prior to it being cars, it was things like tin soldiers and horse and buggy, tokens like in an old monopoly set, all kinds of things Originally many were made of lead. Heck Matchbox started in 1947 70's and 80's aren't considered vintage or classic as the 70's were about the time Hot Wheels came in, then Lesney went to "superfast" wheels. sometime in the late seventies or early 80s Hot Wheels bought out Lesney, the name goes on the but the quality doesn't. So Most 70's and 80's are not really considered vintage. ... yet. early 70's, perhaps. Kinda depends on your perspective. When you're as old as me, 70's and 80's was like yesterday. Within the well known brands, quality dropped about that time. then some other brands took up the slack. I don't know all the good brands in the larger scale cars. Heck, there is even some very good stuff coming out of China. You see, what people here fail to understand, is that the people in China can and sometimes do make quality stuff. At one time being made in China meant high quality. That was before Mao. It was "made in Japan" that meant cheap junk. Now made in Japan is a good thing. Why are they making junk? It's because that's what the people ordering the stuff demand. They want it as cheap as possible, and don't really want it to last, they want it to break or wear out quickly so people go buy more.

WOW!!! that is an amazing collection. If the daughter fell on hard times didn't she realise that she had potentially a million dollars sitting in storage. I'm always curious as to why people abandon their storage lockers.

It's a large collection or 1/24 & 1/18 for sure but I have a collection of Nascar & NHRA that dwarfs this in numbers. I've been trying to find a buyer or broker for years to liquidate 20,000+ pieces. with ZERO luck. 75% is 1/64 scale with a mix of 1/43, 1/24 & 1/18 making up the remainder. I remember watching the book values climb to a half million in the 90's & yet today I'd let the whole thing go for 25 cents on the dollar of what I paid for it because it fills an entire spare room in Rubbermaid totes.
