(Felix from BilletLabs here) Great video guys! But this block was specifically for a 3090ti, not a 4090. We've since obtained a 4090 to test with, and using it with the 3090ti block leaves a gap of around 1mm over the die, so it's never going to cool properly. We're happy to answer any questions in the comments below ✌
I feel like Linus did you a disservice here with a ill-conceived video. I enjoy the humour but I would have liked to have seen them execute this properly. Edit: a month later and it looks like they have finally been called out, yay.
Linus and LTT have a history of not reading instructions (or not knowing how something works) and blaming the product. They do this like once a week. Most recent I remember, they did this with a device that had a SDR chip in it, where they tried to communicate with a digital walkie talkie using only analog signalling- and basically called it bunk. I hope this doesn't hurt your sales.
@@virtual2089 yea I really don't get why they treated it like a novice is going to buy this and use it to build an ITX build. What's even the point of doing it this way? Product doesn't get a fair shake and no one learns anything.
Very cool product. I hope you guys didn't use this on an incompatible graphics card, trash the company because you didn't understand the technical specifications, refused to retest it on the proper card, then stole their product and auctioned it off for your own profit.
I just reviewed the video after the GN one and its pretty much fine. They try it on a 4090, say that it's the wrong gpu to use with this and move on. 99% of this video is about how the build experience and practicality of this thing are. Stupid that they used the wrong GPU absolutely. But this is not unfair. The auctioning off part needs to be explained on wan show though
@@SyedMoizHussain already did, i can never trust LTT review again, also im angered for Linus behavior regarding Billet Labs and whole approach entirely, his ego is much bigger then anything else obviously. How can you not return and then auction somebody else property?! There is a word for that....1 of 1 prototype...Im just shocked by all this
@@JasperSchwinghammer Linus himself directly trash talk the product to his rather large audience on the WAN show calling it a stupid product, even as Luke tried his hardest to steer Linus to do the right thing with linus saying that hes not gonna retest because he thinks the product stupid and useless and not worth the few hours of employee time because he thinks its expensive (company worth 100mil dollar btw). it might have been fine to give the product a rather unfavorable exposure in this video and if Linus stopped at that but he got called out and then proceed to trash the product even more, as a channel with 15.6 million subscriber they need to be held to some standard as they can easily destroy a small 2 man company like this.
It’s actually very believable. The bigger your company, the harder communication is, and the more opportunities there are for information to fall through the cracks or some lazy employee to not take care of something before another less informed employee does something wrong. What happened is completely inexcusable, but at LMG’s size and Linus’s inability to manage it (to the point they just hired a new CEO), I am surprised something like this hasn’t happened sooner.
@@Drazil100 that completel;y ignores the fact that linus refused to retest the product even though he used the wrong GPU that it wasn't built for. that very act tells you all you need to know about the kind of person he is. a narcissist
No joke, talk about adding insult to injury. Testing something without the proper card. Acknowledging they weren't using the right card, but still going full "LEETTTTT"SSSS GOOOOOOO!" on a review that was flawed from the get go. When called on it, basically saying it wasn't worth their time to do it right. Then allegedly auctioning off a prototype that LMG is said to have promised to return not once, but twice. Certainly not a good look for an organization trying to step into legitimate hardware testing.
There's nothing wrong with a paper gasket. They are used for all sorts of things far more demanding than that waterblock - engines, gearboxes, pumps etc.

Taking it down is the wrong move here. Leave it up. If you take it down you get roasted for “hiding your mistakes” instead of owning up to them. Plus the conclusion of the video isnt wrong. @@sheltoncarpenter4099 bro their conclusion is always wrong, they didn't even use the correct GPU lol, and there are more people with 3090ti than 4090(at least for now), so the product is for those people, not everyone upgrades in 2 years, even people with a lot of money..
@@niks660097 they should have never done the video as a review. Maybe a showcase. Linus’ point stands though. It doesnt make sense financially for a 3090ti. The math works out to be essentially the same if you sell the 3090ti and then buy a 4090. Cool company and cool concept but poor timing for a premium product on a last gen gpu. I thought the video was pretty fair of showcasing the tech but explaining that the product doesnt make sense yet
having worked as a CNC technician I can tell you that paper gaskets are perfectly fine. they probably decided to go with paper because of cost along with thermal performance of the gasket. paper gaskets are used to seal gear boxes, motors and all kinds of things that operate at higher pressures and temperatures than a water block could even conceive. its cheap and is way more easily customizable to specifications as well as does the same job a rubber gasket does, just as well if not better in certain situations. the one downside is reusability, it doesn't really like to be reused, but I guess that's where the cheap aspect of the material comes into play.
Yeah, they are totally fine. But you're comparing different applications with very different torque figures. I don't think you'd be assembling your watercooler with >20Nm of torque.
@@diotough paper gaskets like that arent standard printer paper, if you are applying the same force you would need to fully seat an o-ring it will be just fine. Not everything in a cnc machine is torqued, those applications i listed are just to show they are robust for dealing with heat and fluids That being said certain things like a waylube tank (an oil reservoir for the rails of your turret or table) are just acrylic with little m5 screws. i have seen many o rings and paper gaskets and i havent had nearly as many issues with paper gaskets. Whereas i have had many bad o-rings cause they have a nick in them or they dry rotted. idk the real answer to why they went with it, all i know is they deemed it was good enough and they seem like the people who know what they are doing.
Having worked as an automotive machinist, I still would prefer a raised lip and a matching groove to lock that thin paper gasket in. Also, the computer has to constantly deal with more drastic temperature fluctuations as it performs various tasks creating different amounts of heat. A car (especially a street driven one, not a race car) heats up and stays at a fairly stable temperature until it turns off again.
I am deeply dissapointed in you LTT, you screwed over this company and didn't even send their engineering prototypes worth thousands of dollars back even though they requested it returned! Shame on you!

probably less that it's scum and more that there's too many hands and not enough organization. very very disappointing to hear though. this video was cringe to watch and the subsequent commentary on the WAN show was embarrassing to listen to.
They tried to say nothing would fix their issues when them using the right gpu would fix the issue alone. They purposefully were disengenuous and Linus himself is in the video asking why they didnt use the right card, only to act like he knows what he is doing, when he himself is also known to frequently make installation mistakes. Then not returning the prototype like promised, and auctioning it off for profit. That is scum like behavior.
@@SB-pf5rc i think scum is completely in place. Did you not hear the segment of Linus saying that it would cost $500 to re-shoot the video properly, and clear things up? That's straight up scummy behavior. No too many hands, simply greed.
"I'm not sure if i can apologize for not spending another 100, 200, 300, 500 dollars of various peoples time engineering a workaround for a product that no matter the result, nobody should buy". If you show time and time again that that isn't important to LTT, them people will just stop trusting you.
Accuracy went out the window a long time ago. As long as the money keeps rolling in, to hell with accurately representing what you're "reviewing". The wise decision would be to take any review out of LTT and their related channels with a large pinch of salt going forward.
Imagine how the people at Billet Labs would have felt the moment they heard they had a chance to have their product showcased at LTT They've must've been really happy and excited and probably cried for the chance of their lives to happen But then this happens, and all because of a mistake they couldn't control Truly heartbreaking
They were contacted twice and they received their assurance that it shall be returned, twice, and then they proceeded to sell the prototype in an auction, this isn't a mistake, its not even a blunder, its the end of a single-digit employee company
It's worse because Linus essentially trashed the company when he used said prototype wrong and then STOLE and auctioned off the prototype to hurt the start up for the lolz. Like wth I hope Billet Labs sues the heck out of LTT.

LTT tested it on the wrong GPU model. Results were bad... y'know, because they didn't use the GPU the block was designed for. LTT got some scathing feedback about the poor testing methodology. Linus defended their decision to use the wrong GPU for testing on the WAN show by saying it shouldn't be expected of him to spend an extra $500 to do the testing properly and shat on the product, claiming that it's bad anyway, so why bother. LTT never sent the prototype back to Billet Labs, but rather auctioned it off at their expo.
And Billet Labs actualy sent the correct GPU model with the kit to test with (LTT "misplaced" it somwehere for the video so used whatever they could find).
"Billet was originally okay with LTT keeping the block for future builds" can you site where you supposedly got this info from..? I ask because thats not what has been reported by every other outlet including ltt themselves..
Man, it would suck if Linus used a GPU that the product wasn’t tested for, got mad when it didn’t work, and then sold the prototype at an auction after the 2-man startup that made it asked for it back. And then double & triple down on how the product didn’t work for them. Because that would really suck
You know what would suck more? To be Billet Labs and tell LMG that you can use it on a 3090 as well as a 4090 and then be wrong and choose to go and blame other companies in the process for your mistake.
Dear Linus, After the Gamers Nexus video I just thought to let you know that, in the UK, where this company is based, a comparable system from EK costs £400 (cpu and gpu) whereas and the cpu and gpu cooling solution from billet labs cost £649. If the billet labs solution is cooler, then it would, in my opinion, be a valuable option for people wanting the best of the best. We have the i9, which we all know no one needs to play cs:go, but people buy it anyway. And the same goes for water cooling in general, it’s not needed to keep your gpu cool, it’s done as a choice, as a style. Maybe you know this, maybe it comes across in the video. But spending £500 more to get proper results would be something I would have expected from LTT
Hey man great point. I will add that there is the benefit (challenges too) with this product too. The whole point it being a mono block. You're saving on volume and the volume of the connection and tubing. So it's like entirely fair to pay more than the Ek offering.
That kind of gasketing works even for engine blocks. It's will be fine *if you don't open it after assembly*. You are supposed to replace it every time you take it apart (although you can usually get away with one or two disassembles). If it leaks, it's on you guys.
If it only works properly as long as you never disassemble it then it doesn't work for consumer computer building. A solution can be great but if applied to the wrong problem it is useless. A computer cooler should be designed to be removed/opened multiple times over its life without requiring the replacement of vital components. It's not a car that is usually only opened up by a mechanic with actual training and experience.
@@Cosmopean I'm talking about when they took apart the interior waterblock. There is no reason, aside from 'I wanna see what the inside looks like'. A user of the product would have no need to ever take that apart in the lifetime of the product. This deserve a re-do with proper time given to it. I’m very curious about it. And small companies trying to innovate should be boosted not slammed for comedic value.

Linus already commented on it before you typed this comment. research what you’re spewing before you comment again. it was a misunderstanding and they auctioned it for charity. they also said they’re fully compensating billet. don’t watch one RUclips video and judge something solely on that
That doesn't make it ok in the slightest, the company's reputation is still hurt, their development still stalled for months (continues to be to this day), and their best prototype potentially in the hands of a competitor. Those gaskets are actually very good at doing their job. A downside is that they usually need to be replaced once you take it apart after its been used for a while. They are pretty common on cars where the throttle is attached to an intake manifold, or a water pump is attached to the block. They see much higher temps and pressures than you will ever see in a pc.
you shouldk always replace a gasket if you open something. that's basic maintenance 101 from engines to plumbing, computer parts are no different. it would be like taking a CPU cooler of and reusing the thermal paste
To add, paper gaskets don't require an ultra smooth surface to seal on a material like copper. The copper will deform to seal on the gasket surface. Paper and copper gaskets are one of the oldest styles around. I'd have zero issue trusting it.

can u tell me what happened im out of the loop
having worked as a CNC technician I can tell you that paper gaskets are perfectly fine. they probably decided to go with paper because of cost along with thermal performance of the gasket. paper gaskets are used to seal gear boxes, motors and all kinds of things that operate at higher pressures and temperatures than a water block could even conceive. its cheap and is way more easily customizable to specifications as well as does the same job a rubber gasket does, just as well if not better in certain situations. the one downside is reusability, it doesn't really like to be reused, but I guess that's where the cheap aspect of the material comes into play.
Yeah, they are totally fine. But you're comparing different applications with very different torque figures. I don't think you'd be assembling your watercooler with >20Nm of torque.
Why go through all the effort of machining this and just slapping on a "cheap" paper gasket - wasn't this meant to be no expense spared?
A car (especially a street driven one, not a race car) heats up and stays at a fairly stable temperature until it turns off again.
i have seen paper gasket a lot, but on hydrocarbon uses as you listed. Do they still work ok for water?

After the Gamers Nexus video I just thought to let you know that, in the UK, where this company is based, a comparable system from EK costs £400 (cpu and gpu) whereas and the cpu and gpu cooling solution from billet labs cost £649.
You can’t expect these guys to spend valuable time doing research! They’ve got auctions to run!
@@danabc322 and prototypes to ilegally auction off!
If you consider import fees they'd probably be about the same price. But yeah, it's a specialist premium product.
@@danabc322 lol
Hey man great point. I will add that there is the benefit (challenges too) with this product too. The whole point it being a mono block. You're saving on volume and the volume of the connection and tubing. So it's like entirely fair to pay more than the Ek offering.
That kind of gasketing works even for engine blocks. It's will be fine *if you don't open it after assembly*. You are supposed to replace it every time you take it apart (although you can usually get away with one or two disassembles). If it leaks, it's on you guys.
as long as it wasn't exposed to liquid it should be fine to disassemble.
You can remove and reattach the waterblock as many times as you'd like and never encounter that gasket.
@@satibel I agree it's probably fine, but it's pretty easy for them to tear and weaken under the pressure of everything being torqued down over and over, especially since it needs to be tightened down relatively well. Those gaskets are actually very good at doing their job. A downside is that they usually need to be replaced once you take it apart after its been used for a while. you shouldk always replace a gasket if you open something. that's basic maintenance 101 from engines to plumbing, computer parts are no different. it would be like taking a CPU cooler of and reusing the thermal paste
To add, paper gaskets don't require an ultra smooth surface to seal on a material like copper. The copper will deform to seal on the gasket surface. Paper and copper gaskets are one of the oldest styles around. I'd have zero issue trusting it.
