@15:44 The parachutist's jacket was called the "SSF Smock" and was worn by all members of the Special Service Force while in garrison, including the "legs" (Airborne slang for soldiers who don't jump: leg = Lacking Enough Guts). For winter dress, we usually wore it with work dress pants, combat boots, and a colored T-shirt which identified our unit. Summer dress was almost the same, except we used button-up short sleeved shirts. Only the Airborne Regiment or one of the CAR's sub-units wore the SSF Smock with combat pants in garrison, and I don't think it was ever worn in the field.
Those press stud snaps on that flap on the back used to pull right out of the smock. It was a design defect - they were held in place by four little bent tabs and half the time the tabs would break off, making them useless. That happened a lot, so the guys would pin the flap back on with safety pins -- that's one reason we used to call it the "diaper".
Incidentally, the diaper was completely useless for parachutists. Jumpers wear a parachute harness around their bodies and between their legs, which naturally holds the jumper's clothes close to the body. Don't believe what the label on your combat shirt said. Parachutist's uniforms never "balloon" while jumping.

Quick notes for the Airborne Jump smock. The smocks were originally issued in 1975 the pattern DPM is what is called reverse DPM as in the lighter colours are the opposite of the British DPM..The original DPM for the jump smock was for a contract through Peerless garments for the Tanzanian military. The original jump smocks were olive green up until 1975.The smock was rarely worn in combat or exercise conditions because it is rather fragile snap and material wise ( you found that out when the snap pulled out). The smock is made from a windproof nylon/cotton blend. Features of the smock include a hood in a pocket on the neck and it also has inside velcro pockets as well.(similar to the combat shirt MKII you have)..The smock also has a rear pocket at the bottom for stuffing it into with double sided zippers much like your 2 winter EC jackets.Look under the flap it is there. The flap on the smock was used to keep the bottom of the smock from billowing on a jump as well as the keeper snaps on the side ( nothing says i can't see like your bottom part of your smock billowing up). The smock is also made a bit baggy so a Trooper can wear their fighting order inside of it (webbing) all the pockets are lined with nylon to allow mags to be pulled out easier . The bellow pockets are elasticized to keep mags in as well as other items. All the pockets have pull tabs to make them easier to open. The material is also water resistant .

Garrison (Duck Hunter Jacket). We hated it but it was better than the bus driver jacket. The garrison boots were/are crap. All units of the SSF wore them. We didn't wear Canadian flags at one time in Canada, only overseas until we went to the green Canada flags

it was a jump smock isuued in petawawa in the 70's and 80;s as part of the special service force.....all units attached to the ssf were issued with jump boots.... as well ..only worn during brigade parades

The Airborne Smock, was issued only to Special Service Forces in Petawawa and was not only worn by the Airborne but,all combat regiments at the SSF Brigade,in Pet...thank you very much!!! And it was extremely common.

Irish Stock.......The Airborne jump smock was also worn by the parachute riggers at The Canadian Forces Parachute Maintenance Depot (CFPMD), and the riggers attached to the Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR), to 435 (T) Squadron and the Canadian Airborne Centre (CABC). Without those parachute riggers, you would have NO parachutes to jump with or to use in cargo airdrop (heavy drop or LAPES).......many of whom evolved from the original parachute riggers of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps (RCOC), who wore the early version of the army parachute jump smock and original army parachute wings....as for this narration of the Dennison jump smock.....NO parachutist wore a RED shirt nor a RED beret.....the T-shirt or Sweat shirt worn under the jump smock and the beret were MAROON.....the Royal Canadian Air Force SAR Techs (Search and Rescue Tecnician) wore a RED beret and the Canadian Army Provost Corps (Military Police) also wore a RED beret.....(aka the "Cherry-beret")......also a few die- hard Airborne members at Mobile Command Headquarters and National Defence Headquarters who were in designated Airborne-job positions also were authorized to wear a MAROON beret......as were a very few SAR techs authorized to wear their RED berets.....so have you got that all straight now?

    • @medalsresearch6226

Everybody in the SSF wore these smocks until about 1990. As well the Reserves QOR Para company wore them. The only time they were issued to anyone outside the AB Regt after 1992 was for one Parade in Dec 1992 for those going to Somalia after it was changed from UN to Op Deliverance- then all troops supporting wore them- probably even cooks again. If you wanted one because they were interesting you could get one at Honest Johns surplus for about 100 bucks. They had many shades and they are actually beautiful. When you returned them you only needed to return the hood to keep the smock if you knew the right person. There is a post on these online with the real history from those who were there when the AB Regiment paid for these to be purchased and issued themselves in the 1970s before the Govt paid for it. They fell apart in the washer and were much too hot for the field apparently- but go figure they were worn at times in Somalia. There were also the Canadian DPM Combats (Known now online as Tanzanian Combats) which were actually really issued once and worn on a 1970s parade which i believe the same post or website describes- PM Trudeau showed up and saw it and didn't "like it" immediately- no surprise - thus we were stuck with these silly OD uniforms and the stupid red green bush hat for another 25 odd years. Please also talk about the useless 1990s load bearing vest- equal piece of garbage. The 90s Gore-Tex Jacket was very nice- and much better than the useless fall jacket - but they did not put slanted big pockets on the chest and a US M65 type liner and not the silly polyester sweaty one which would have been good. We also wore US Rain coats up until the 90s as the Canadian rain suit was like a business raincoat and useless- we even wore garbage bags once as it was so useless when we were forces to wear it. When the newer one came along that you show we liked that but it wasn't as good as the US one. They've come out with newer Gore-Tex ones but forgot to line them like the gen 1 US Gore-Tex parka which makes all the difference.

Some people are stolen valour nazis and need to chill.
There are tons of people who collect military regalia, people who probably have more respect and knowledge about and for those in the military than most.
As long as someone is not wearing the full uniform or making false claims then relax. No one is going to think some guy wearing a jacket with a pair of chinos is really someone who served.
I get that it is an issue but it seems to be getting a bit over the top with how crazy its getting. Its becoming as silly as some poor kid wearing a red ball cap getting run out of a neighbourhood...
It should all come down to whether the person is intentionally trying to steal valour, otherwise drop it.
That jump jacket is just awesome.

The rain jacket is great if you're just standing around in the rain. Start to do any type of moderate activity however, you'll get just as wet as if you weren't wearing one at all, only it will be sweat, not rain. They're like wearing a Ziplock bag, no ventilation.

If your in the military and your improperly wearing the wings, fine - that's a problem, don't wear what you haven't earned. But the previous owner of those wings obviously didn't value them enough to hold on to them after they left the forces, they take upon a different value in civi life. Shouldn't enforce military values on those who aren't in the military

    Clarifications.
The Canadian para smock was first issued in the summer of 1974 just in time for the Edmonton Freedom of the City Parade. They were in use more widely until 1995 when the idiot liberal government disbanded the Airborne Regt. Beyond that, instructors at the Cdn Para Centre (formerly the Cdn AB Centre - CABC until 1996) for a few more years beyond. They were not authorized for wear by the new dispersed para companies.
The smocks were the idea of the Regt Comd, Col Lessard, who wanted them to be a symbol or the Regt's identity, like their distinctive maroon berets (maroon, not red). The maroon beret is the internationally recognized headdress of paratroopers. Before 1974, many jumpers wore the older OD smocks which were not on general issue nor were they being produced. By the 70s, they had become a status symbol but not everyone had one. Contrary to your video, they were not worn "with black pants". Generally speaking they were worn with the OD combat pants and a maroon AB Regt t shirt (long sleeve sweat shirt if temps were colder).. On rare occasions they could be worn with the dark green 'work dress' pants (same ones later worn with the garrison jacket). However, members of the Regt did not like that.
With the creation of the Special Svc Force Bde (SSF) in 1977, the wearing of the smock was expanded to people outside of the operational airborne community as a symbol of their belonging to that special, highly mobile, rapid deployable bde. For example, First bn the Royal Canadian Regt in London, ON was now part of the SSF and, as such, they all wore the smock... whether or not they were jumpers. The patch you refer to as the "OSONS patch" is that of the SSF. Osons is the bde motto in Latin and means 'we dare'.
They looked good but were somewhat impractical in the field. The more non jumpers chose to strut around in them, the less that real paratroopers wore them. They generally became garrison wear. As for the DPM pattern. Yes it was based on UK DPM with slight colour differences. The pattern was created for the Tanzanian army who, in turn, contracted Peerless Garments of Winnipeg to make their uniforms. These had the same pocket layout etc as the Cdn uniforms. When the AB Regt was shopping around for someone to make their smocks in 1974, Peerless said "we've got thousands of yards of this Tanzanian stuff, you want we should make it out of this?" Okay. And the smock was born.
AB vets get really touchy about civilians and non-jumpers wearing their precious smocks. Good for a collection, it is disrespectful to slum around in it.

since i can't comment on your 2nd video of cadpat this is on the wikipedia as well. Like other elements of Canadian military uniforms, ownership and wearing of CADPAT is subject to section 419 of the Criminal Code, which prohibits the unlawful use of military uniforms.[5].
Also cadpat is very easy to get back then it was hard to get but now its super easy i have bought lots of it from people in the army or airforce. ive heard lots of complaints about that cadpat rain jacket its not real goretex its WMVP says in the book it comes with if its new,
only cadpat items that are hard to get are the sniper jacket sets ive seen 2 for sale since i started collecting and using also bought some commerically made cadpat that was actually used overseas and in canada some prefer some commercially made stuff over the real stuff.
ive bought and sold lots of cadpat and its very easy to find now people in the military trying to get some extra money sell there gear or extra stuff they dont need. Also the jacket you have there is a couple other versions the navy has one in black and theres a search and rescue one in orange
i buy cadpat cause its better then it ending up in the shredder since they shred old or worn out cadpat uniforms and dump in a landfill theres a video of it half the shit i seen in that video was not even worn out.
they don't want people impersonating soldiers and they dont want people to own it cause its got NIR in the fabric which is NEAR INFRARED INK that stuff is not even permanent and wears out over time, you can also get legal us military camo with NIR or commercially made stuff with NIR .
finland let there copyright expire now theres a company making it and its been approved for use in military exercises and fun activity's and its got NIR the color is similar to cadpat but not all Digital. i think 1 of the nicknames for it was FinPat or something
this is why i wanted to PM you since i had to type all this out

      @pacmanpaquette  6 лет назад

Thanks for your comments Kyle! Yes i agree with the above. i was not even aware of the NIR at all, thanks for that! Ill look it up. You are correct, Cadpat is really easy to get both from old stock, Army surplus or things that were donated by family members. Also its readily available from overseas and looks just as good. Not sure about the Goretex part but you may be correct. In my case, i didnt pay for my jacket so im fine with it but you are correct in saying tyhat some might prefer the real thing over this. I have worn this jacket many times in the wet and cold and can confirm that it is great at keeping you warm and dry.

Excellent video! Just for the record, I've been told that the Airborne Smocks typically were not worn in the field, they tended to be very delicate, faded rapidly and would often rip easily at the seams. Rather, they were purchased mostly as garrison garb, something to differentiate Airborne from the rest of the troops. Gave inspiration for the later Garrison Jackets

If he was military, and wasn't jump qualified, then yes, don't wear what you haven't earned, your going to get eaten alive for violating regs and disrespecting those who've qualified. But outside the military, having jump wings on your clothing is as meaningless as having the 'Supreme' logo. Shouldn't expect civis to conform to military standards

I'm sure Canadian soldiers today would complain about their kit as any soldier of any country in any generation do. But you really have no idea how lucky you are.
I have the misfortune to have joined up in the early 1990s, when all our uniform was starting to age, but well before the new CADPAT stuff had started to roll in.
Everything was either too huge or too small, too thick or too thin, too flimsy or too stiff. Dry sags and gortex kit were non-existent.
The rain jacket leaked and there was no velcro in any of our jackets or combat shirts. Soldiers had to manually sew their patches on, often in very amateur and a gazillion different ways, ended up looking unprofessional.
Never understood the logic of a silly straw string on a combat shirt around the waist, when all you needed was either a more streamlined cut around the waist, or to have buttoned or velcro adjustment tapes around as some other countries' armies do. I'm sure those with a big belly must have complained things were too tight then again if you had a huge belly you should have no business being in the military.
The whole idea of a garrison dress was a mystery. Why need a different pair of boots when you could wear a pair of perfectly polished combat boots with it? In the end that's what we were allowed to do anyway. Why have camo in something but not consistently in everything?
The Arctic Warfare kit was great I'd give you that. I still miss those white mukluks.
The Brit's male and female waist belt buckles are far superior but we felt obliged to look more American with that silly slide-lock buckle which comes loose by itself.
Can't honestly say those in charge of kit development and procurement were very bright back in the days.

You are right, it is restricted. In fact, most used or decommissioned Cadpat clothing is shredded. That being said, any respectable army surplus here in Canada will have some on hand as some soldiers or even retired soldiers sell it to them for a profit. Also, some makes it in the hands of civilians through family members. The truth is that Cadpat is really not restricted if you know where to look.
