    I find Thunderbird 2 is the one that's most in the public eye when it comes to Gerry Anderson. It even makes cameo apperances in Japanese anime for heavens sake.

    My GA life started with the end of Supercar and finished with Thunderbirds. I never got into ufo, Scarlet etc. So from my limited era it would have to be - Supercar, Fireball XL5, Thunderbird 1, Stingray, and the best, Thunderbird 2. My childhood was spent replicating these out of Lego. Gerry and his wife will forever be in my, and our, hearts.

    I can agree completely with this list. The word I would use to best describe an Eagle is utilitarian. I would have chosen Thunderbird 2 for the same reason that the Eagle is so useful, but I can accept your love of FAB 1. One of the reasons I love T2 is that Virgil was my favourite character on that show. Talented. He could play the piano, hold his own in chess against Brains, and I think he and Lady Penelope had an unspoken attraction. That said, "Filed, actioned, banked."

    You know, after the build-up and warning, I really was surprised at FAB1 being in the top spot - I would have given it to Thunderbird 2 - but you know what?... you convinced me, and for a reason you never even mentioned. Something Thunderbirds did, that none of the other Anderson shows managed, was to have a female character that wasn't just window dressing, didn't need rescuing all the time, and could deal it out with the best of them. Lady Penelope brought in a whole new fan-base of girls, introduced them to science fiction, and showed them that girls could really do anything, and be cool while doing it.

    Great video presentation of vehicles used in Gerry Anderson's tv shows!
    Derrick Meddings was a natural talent for creating futuristic machines that combined realism in functionality & form with science fiction attributes. Meddings surely could have worked for NASA as a conceptual designer, IMO.
    My favorite vehicle from Anderson's tv shows? I like many of them, but perhaps the Crablogger vehicle (from the Thunderbirds episode "Path of Destruction") might be close to a "favorite vehicle"; it was massive & rugged looking, as would be expected for a forest traversing (rough terrain) vehicle, but had "space age" design features & details, including the control cabin ("flight deck"). Meddings knew the design fundamentals & details to produce a realistic model of the forest machine, probably by having seen & studied actual full scale heavy machines of various types, & Meddings captured the size & details very well in the model forest vehicle's design, function & weathering. I know that with all that, the vehicle still wasn't quite "true to life" realistic, but was surely fascinating to me, & perhaps could have been similar to a "conceptual design study" for an actual vehicle.
    I also liked the Mobile vehicles, the Skydiver (excellent name) submarine & the interceptors from "UFO"; realistically detailed, while having "futuristic" design. "UFO" was the first Anderson tv show I saw, in the early 1970's. I did not discover his other tv shows until probably over 20 years later, & learn of Anderson's association with the shows.
    But Meddings was excellent at producing any model machine (spacecraft, submarine, car, building or structure, etc.) in all of Anderson's tv shows, I think.

    For some reason, I assumed you were going to pick FAB 1 for Number One. But, as a 60-year-old man whose first TV love was Thunderbirds, which I still occasionally watch. But my Number One would have been Thunderbird 2. I liked Virgil the most out of the Tracy brothers, and TB2 was all business, a grimy work vehicle. And I love the pod vehicles, particularly the Firefly.

      @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci  11 месяцев назад +4

      The sidewinder was in the first episode of Thunderbirds I ever watched !!! and it just blew me away. The Zero X is an amazing design I think they were both designed by Derek Meddings who is an absolute legend in the world of special effects, he worked on all of the James Bond series Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and super man and the Batman films.

    • @basiltaylor8910
      @basiltaylor8910 11 месяцев назад +2

      Yes Zero X is COOL one of my favs, but flawed, Derek lacks the basics of good aerodynamics and experience in airframe structures. He failed to include some sort of suspension between the lift bodies and main spacecraft, allowing the lift bodies to ride turbulent air during take off and climb ,like a car on a bumpy road .

    • @markparry63

      Yes but modern fighter aircraft are inherently unstable, only the computer making thousands of adjustments a second, keep it behaving. By time of Thunderbirds flight control computers will be vastly superior lol

    Eagle - This is absolutely my favorite, small scale, science fiction ship ever.
    Skydiver - I always wondered how they re-attached the plane to the front of the sub. It's mostly a traditional type aircraft and as such, it can't hover, fly backwards, or operate underwater, so how did it re-dock with the sub? Did they have to go into port, transport the plane there and then use a crane to attach it back onto the sub? It's a cool concept, but seems rather impractical as once launched, the sub portion is pretty much out of options until it goes to port and has the fighter re-attached.

    • @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci
      @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci  11 месяцев назад +5

      I used to have exactly the same thoughts about sky diver until the Gerry Anderson channel on here posted a video about it, apparently it does land in the water then submerges and waits for the diver section to re dock with it. I’ll put a link to the video below. Thanks for watching my video am glad you enjoyed it.

    Did you know that when the concept artists were working on Star Wars, one of them came up with a drawing for their idea for the Millennium Falcon and someone else said "No mate - that's already been done in a British TV show called Space 1999" and it was the Eagle to all intents and purposes.

    • @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci
      @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci  11 месяцев назад +4

      I never knew that !!!I knew George Lucas was looking at a hamburger and saw the olive on the cocktail stick on the side when he had the idea of placing the Falcons cockpit on the side of it rather than the middle but I never knew that was why he was redesigning it for that reason !!! Wow that is huge it means that indirectly the eagle is the reason behind one of the most iconic shapes in film history!!!

      @beachcomberbob3496 11 месяцев назад +2

    I grew up with Gerry Anderson's brilliant creations. I first watched Thunderbirds in the late sixties and never missed an episode of any Anderson series after that. I pretty much agree with your list but have to say that Thunderbird 2 is THE Anderson creation of all time. It really is in a class of it's own. Perhaps that means it shouldn't be on any list like this as it just stands so far above anything else. Great video. Thanks.

If I had to choolse only ONE vehicle from Gerry, Sylvia and their many, many talented people, I would choose Supercar - the one vehicle that could "do it all". But all of their vehicles and macines were fantastic. And to think, that these people did all this for US - for we children to thrill to. What a beautiful gift they gave to us. Best wishes.

Fortunately for us Kiwi's, we got the BBC, ITV, Granada and other British TV and not many of the American series. SO, guess what I am doing now? Watching You Tube series 1 of Supercar. LOL

      I just finished watching it. I loved the interaction with the scientist, engineer and test pilot. That was quite funny. The subtle humour is brilliant. I imagined watching it with young boys eyes. I see why so many were 'hooked' by the concept car. There are flying cars today, but usually owned by the developers and certainly not transferable from air to water. But, give it a bit more time :-)

    FWIW: The one vehicle design from *UFO* I had a little 'trouble' with was the _Moonbase Interceptor._ While it was not a _bad_ design, it looked too are aerodynamic to me.
    A few years ago I came across some images online of what supposedly was the _original_ design concept of the _Interceptor._ It was less aerodynamic, and vaguely reminiscent of a NASA Gemini spacecraft. That would seemed more believable to me.

    Ok. First comment. You should have done a top 10 or maybe a top 20. Then you could have included Gabriel, Zero X and the Sidewinder.
    Now for the vehicles you actually chose.
    Skydiver: I always loved UFO definitely the best of the live action show (I'm including Doppelganger, Space Precinct and the Protectors.). Possibly inspired by the British M3 Submarine which carried a seaplane in a waterproof hanger.
    Stingray: Little I can add but probably not on my list.
    SPV: Amazing vehicle! The use of hidden supply dumps/troops was something the British set up during WW2 to cope with a possible German invasion.
    Eagle: The concept of the distinctive shape of the Eagle was that with next to no friction in space, it wouldn't have to be aerodynamic. So, of course, they used them as orbital landers.
    FAB 1: Excellent choice. The only car not built by Rolls Royce that was allowed to have the 'Flying Lady' hood ornament. I remember seeing the life size replica, built on a lorry chassis, a couple of times at rallies.
    Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, you have a new subsciber now.

    Definitely no bricks being thrown from here... As you said ...it's your list. Plus I agree with your #1 choice. What made Thunderbirds especially so brilliant for me was how futuristic everything was with the gadgets (and there's probably a video you could do just on them)
    Back to bricks though - Thunderbirds were using cellphones in 1964 - but the first handheld cellular device (the original "Brick") was first demonstrated in 1973.
    In 1964 Thunderbirds introduced us to a communications device that was to become like the flip-phone 32 years later (like Lady Penelope's Compact that could do voice and video,) similarly Jeff, Alan & Brains are all seen using wrist watches that could receive video calls (the first smartwatch came out in 1999 & 2013 finally saw something like their watches!)
    Then there was their use of drones (TB1's Remote control hover camera) and remote operated vehicles, and hoverpacks.
    It came as a shock when I realised we have finally caught up with Thunderbirds!

    What a great video, and I wasn't expecting FAB 1 to come out at number 1! That said, I agree with your reasoning. I had a Corgi toys FAB 1 when I was a kid and loved it - I wish I still had it, it would be worth a bob or two!
    Honourable mentions from me would be Fireflash, Couldbase, Thunderbird 2, Angel jets, Fireball XL5 and SID.

    Another great trip down memory lane discussing the genius of Gerry Anderson’s world building. Everyone has their particular favourites, but the technical level of Derek Meddings & Mike Trim’s designs were astounding. Fab 1s performance was incredible but believable compared to Sir Malcom Campbells Blue Bird which Broke the World Land Speed Record at Lake Eyre, South Australia, at a Speed Of 403.10 MPH. The blue colour of Blue Bird very similar to the SPVs colour, so I would not be surprised if it influenced Derek Meddings design for this vehicle (my favourite). Apparently the rearward facing seats on the SPV are from the safety studies for the VC10 aircraft which had rear facing seats. Stingray and Skydiver are both beautiful designs but Stingray always reminded me of the E Type Jaguar (1961-69) era of car design and SkyDiver is from the Aston Martin Bulldog (1979) era of functional design. The Eagle Transporter is epitomy functional design, apparently assessed by NASA JPL and would be good spacecraft. Designed by Brian Johnson who worked on Stanley Kurbick’s 2001: Space Odyssey, you can the influence of the Space Bus. The ALPACA’s real world moon lander design only reinforces how important science fiction shows are for inspiring the next generation engineers, designers, scientists & artists.

    You speak in such a beautiful way and it is clear how important these programmes were to you as they were to me and so many, many others. I love your choice of FAB 1 for number 1. I would not have made that choice, but you completely surprised me with that, and that is what makes all this so sweet - everyone has their favorites! When I was young and growing up, and Captain Scarlet came along, that was my favorite becuase of it's seriousness, the realism of the puppets heads and the amazing SPV and MSV. Of course, Thunderbirds was a favorite as well. However, now, at age 66, if I had to choose just one, I would choose Supercar. Looking back, I love the one-vehicle-that-can-do-it-all concept. Also, in retrospect, I think Supercar does not get the credit it is due for the depth in some of the dialogue. I may be wrong, but I feel that there is more character development (depth to the characters' personalities) in Supercar than in some of the other Supermarionation shows. But that is not a criticism of any of the shows at all in any way. Gerry, Sylvia and all of the very creative artists that worked with them truly gave we children a beautiful GIFT with all of their programmes. Just look at all of the work they went to, to bring these to us. I know my age will show here, but what amazes me so very much is that everything you saw was REAL. Everything was in the form of hand-crafted models. NO computer effects. How the puppets walked does not bother me in the least. That you could sometimes see the marionette wires in the earlier shows does not bother me in the least. That you could sometimes see supporting wires on Supercar herself is of no consequence. Our imaginations erased those wires!! I would get goosebumps down my back as a child, and all these years later, I still get those goosebumps! How utterly beautiful. Thank you again for such wonderful comments and clear appreciation on your part for all of the hard work of Gerry, Sylvia & co. Your comments truly do all their programmes justice.

As he slept upstairs at home, he was not frightened of them 'invading' the house. Fortunately, by the time the episode came out where they had developed solid rocket engines to make them fly, he was old enough to, bravely, deal with it. Funny how young minds work.

      The Eagle was a brilliant design for a transport operating in a vacuum, but no way was it atmosphere capable no matter how good the vertical thrusters were. It did, however, manage to cause the design of the Millennium Falcon to become that iconic saucer-like ship in Star Wars because when Brian Johnson was asked if he could build the original design he had to tell George Lucas that he already had. In Star Trek TOS, there are component of the warp drive labelled XL5 in homage to Fireball and in an episode of Star Trek Enterprise, Archer copilots a small ship that is highly reminiscent of Steve Zodiac's ride. Gerry Anderson always wanted to produce live action series rather than puppet animations, but he had an influence on those who made shows and films with more money across decades.

As the cinema in Auckland, New Zealand, The Majestic Theater, anticipated it was going to be just as bigger hit here as in America, they refurbished the entire interior before the opening night. Blue felt on the walls up to the domed ceiling. The ceiling was dotted with 'stars' from little lights. There was a 'Taj Mahal' type wooden archway going over the stage and screen. As a young crumb cruncher in 60s I grew up on the first US run of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson shows ( as well as TOS Trek on NBC, Irwin Allen scifi and first run of Speed Racer so no surprise I'm a complete and total scifi geek) and I have to agree with FAB1 in the number one slot because of the fact you really can't pick one of the big 5 because it would be like picking a favorite child ( though I might have at least added an honorable mention to the series semi recurring mechanical damsel in distress the Fireflash.
    I will say at almost 62 I have been rewatching original TB as well as TAG and while a lot of childhood favorites are best left as memories rather than the cringe adult views can induce TB holds up very well still almost 60 years later. Oh the Eagle yes yes a thousand times yes..the craft looked like what would come from NASA design extrapolated 30 years after the lunar landing. And finally Skydiver exactly Anderson was getting away from the fun,over complicated trappings of Supermarination and going for the more workable looking design. And Sky1 could also have an honorable mention to the Dove from Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun aka Doppelganger.
    Was ablto pick up the old Amai Sky1 and SHADOmobile at of all places the fleamarket at Riverside Iowa Trekfest this past June and while the kits do have some issues they should fill the gap on my model shelf between my various Thunderbirds ( including FAB1 and Fireflash) and my multitude of Eagles until the proper Round2 UFO kits hit the shelves.

    FWIW: Like my separate comment about the *UFO* _Moonbase Interceptors,_ my ONLY real critism of the *SPACE: 1999* _Eagles_ was their aerodynamics -- or lack thereof -- would NOT allow them to enter the atmosphere of a planet.
    That said, few years ago it occurred to me a way around that would be if the _Eagles_ had some kind of _removable aeroshell_ that would cover the entire spacecraft aft of the command module and turn the _Eagle_ into a _lifting body_ of sorts. You still might have to use some _suspension of disbelief_ make it happen, but it would have been more believable IMHO.
