It’s been a while, but you have helped me-immensely-once again, and just wanted to tell you how very much I appreciate you, Andy. I have had a Rocketeer on my bucket list for several years, but with limited income, I have waited for the right opportunity. I just found a pristine 503a at a thrift store that looks like it has never been used! The gods must have been smiling on me as it was VERY inexpensive. It only needed a power cord (I had a spare foot controller), a new bobbin friction wheel, and a little cleaning, oil and grease. As I went to replace the friction wheel, I found a strange piece of wire the appeared to be a spring. I went right to your channel and with 30 minutes had the bobbin winding parts cleaned, reassembled and working. You are truly a treasure to so many of us. Thank you again for your selflessness in providing so many of us with your experience, wonderful teaching style and a little bit of sweet laughter to boot. ❤️
So, that old saying is true! Good things come to those that wait.✨ So happy for you, Helen. Your new Rocketeer sounds fantastic. Thanks for the kind comment and happy sewing.
He's been a great help to me too with my 503a. It's a great machine but I wish Singer would have put a 1.25 amp motor instead of the .7 amp that it has, steel gears and all. I make things from very heavy material and the only problem I've had with my machine is that the presser foot releases top tension when I have multi layers of material. I tried adjusting the problem out but when I did, the presser foot didn't have enough pressure. I can imagine, with all the videos Andy has made, how many people he has helped.
It's very common for the one to be broken, but sometimes both. I think the other gets broken from someone fooling around with the parts. Glad you found the videos, and thanks for keeping that Rocketeer in service.
Hi Andy! You are my Go To Guy to learn the FINE DETAILs of disassembly/reassembly! I'm working on a 503A for the FIRST TIME EVER, and the bobbin winder didn't work - plus the machine sews beautifully then a noise CLUNK then Full STOP with a binding of the bobbin/top thread. Oh well.. So when I finish reassembly of the bobbin winder, I'll trouble shoot your other videoes - especially on the problems with threading this Little Modernish Beastie. It will go to a new sewer, who can't troubleshoot herself, so I wish to get all the bugs out first. Thank you!!! Hugs from Virginia!
Here are some ideas for the thread binding problem, if I may. Check the Thread Clearance Gap between the bobbin case corner and the spring: ruclips.net/video/OXKqZp87eN4/видео.html Mathew from OutFinshing13 spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting his rocketeer that had your problem and found a solution by removing the "De-Lint" pin near the hook. Something to think about if the thread clearance is ok ruclips.net/video/19UA-7Rj8S0/видео.html You might want a copy of the original Singer Service Manual for your machine. I always find solutions in them and you can download a free copy here: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf Thanks for your continued visits to my channel and good luck.
Thank you for this great video! I volunteer with an organization in California that works with at risk youth. I was able to fix a sewing machine that will be donated to one of the youth so she (or he) can design and make their own clothes. I never could have done this without your help!
OMG, best comment of the year so far!! 😀 I make all these videos for people to repair and maintain their machines, and the fact they helped you do something to help this young person in their creating journey is just too valuable for words. God Bless and thank you 💖🙏✨
Just put a bobbin winder rubber o-ring tire on one of these and dropped that kick out spring before understanding exactly where it fit. Went to RUclips hoping to maybe find a pic that would show it in proper position and figured I could take it from there. Can't believe I found 7 minutes (from 11 to 18 minutes) devoted to solving my problem! I left the engage lever assembly in place so it was even a little trickier getting bobbin winder screw back in. All good now! Thanks much!
Hey Andy, I found a “for parts only“ 500A a couple of days ago. Come to find out I had extra parts from when I had parted out one sometime back. I ended up reassembling the bobbin winder system, and I don’t remember it being this easy from the first time I tried. You always make things a piece of cake for me. Thank you so much. I ended up finding the “hub” of the handwheel with the screw I’m missing (don’t go there😂). Now the last thing to work on for this machine is that it’s not going all the way to the left in full zigzag mode. So I’ll be getting back with my blow dryer to hopefully loosen up that gunk in there. Then she will no longer be a “for parts only” machine❤️
Gee Rhonda, it's like you're becoming a lead technician with these machines. How many have you saved now? I'm glad you worked the stop motion screw problem out already. I've been looking around an email the couple people but nobody had just the screw for sale but only the whole hand wheel assembly for about 20 bucks
@@andytubesewing1953 lol. The piece of the handwheel that I found is just that, a piece of it, not the entire package so it only cost about seven dollars. Hopefully I’ll see it in a few days. Thanks again Andy!
Such a great video with good close-ups of the detail needed to reproduce your results! Thank-you! You are my GO-TO for these great Singer 'slant' machines!
Thank you for keeping your machine in service for yourself or another. Your efforts help justify my efforts in helping folks do just that and I appreciate you taking the time and effort to comment. 🙏
Thank you! This video has been enormously helpful to me. I just received a 503a I bought on eBay, and it was loaded with oil, and the bobbin winder idd not work. I had trouble recalling how it went together, but watching this resolved my issues brilliantly!

@@andytubesewing1953 Great, thanks. Do you know a source of parts? I need the oil shield (172504), new felts for the under-cover spool spindles, and the accessory spindle. I found the accessory spindle on eBay but the guy wants $34 *buy it now)! I'd also like a new cord, but a brown one, have only seen black. Thanks.
@@jviss07 All the folks I have bought parts from have mostly migrated to eBay, so I shop there. No one makes new oil shields no you look for a used one. The accessory spindle has become so rare I'm surprised you even found one for sale. I've never been able to find new brown cords; only black ones, and I've looked for a very long time. If you really want brown you need to find a used cord and take your chances.
I'm sorry I missed part of your question, John. I've never been able to find new made felts for the undercover pop-up spindles. I buy a 12" square piece of light tan felt from Walmart for $1.49 (in the office/school supply area) and just cut out new ones. I remove any residual glue from the metal base of the spindles and glue my new ones on. I use Goo Gone to remove the old glue and I use E6000 glue (also at Walmart) for the new felt, which is the same glue I use for gluing new oil pan felts. www.walmart.com/ip/Eclectic-E6000-Industrial-Adhesive-Clear-2-Fl-Oz/17808713

Thank you very much. I just inherited one of these machines in pretty nice condition. Went to wind a bobbin and oh-oh. Turns out the friction wheel had perished and was turning to dust (which I also had to clean out). I'm pretty good at repairing stuff, and your video gave me that little bit of confidence that it would be a pretty simple affair to fix, and it was. Haven't got the proper "tire" yet, making do with a slightly too small faucet o-ring on that, and a bit of fishtank tube on the other to make a nice connection and voila. Running nice. Thanks again, I'm off to scour the internet for a new original "tire".
Nicely done, MacGyver! Very creative. Your videos are very helpful, and you're slow enough for me to follow. Thanks for helping me replace the rubber wheel and your video on lubrication was helpful as well. This was my Mom's machine. It got a some use in the '60's. I don't think she ever lubricated it. Now it purrs like a charm!
Thanks, Scott. I'm glad you found my channel. Family owned machines are usually the best to have. I get complaints about the slowness of my presentation, but I wanted people to follow along. Those who find it too slow can click on the little gear, bottom right of the video, and change the speed from "normal" to as high as twice as fast. You can slow it down too, but then my videos will put you to sleep, haha. Thanks for taking the time to comment and enjoy your Rocketeer.
Thank you! My rocketeer was making some odd noises while winding a bobbin. Your video helped me diagnose the problem and I got the assembly back together.

Oh Andy, I took all these tricky parts off, course the first spring and washer went flying...lol...had to take the motor out to find the parts. Cleaned the motor shaft while it was out and that brown teflon like gear....then back to fixing my bobbin problem. Cleaned the parts and put it all back together and it still doesn't work no matter the adjustments you recommended. What can the problem be? No parts are broken.
Thank you. I thought I overdid it somewhat, but I get many inquiries about this BW that I want to be able to just refer people to this video. I know you will be doing your 503A in the future and trying to help others too. Thanks for commenting.
No, not overdone at all. I NEED the tips on what to watch out for and how exactly to hold stuff to get it back together correctly. If I didn't have your videos that show me stuff like this I would never attempt it - I'd be too chicken!
Great video was able to do the rubber wheel part. But I can't get the outer stop wheels to turn at all otherwise they turn to move needle. And still haven't fixed the thread breaking issue. This is my favorite machine.

@@andytubesewing1953 A great resource supply store. I will order the rubber wheel from here, found one spring, but not the release lever spring. I guess it still functions without it. Thanks for the prompt response and the link!
Love all of your videos! This is my second time removing and reinstalling the bobbin winder of my 503a. I dropped something in the machine and had to take off the winder to be able to retrieve it, so I figured I'd replace the rubber wheel with the one I purchased the last time I fiddled with the winder. The new tire is black and not gray and it is too small for my winder. The current tire has a small tear in it but still works it does have Singer printed on it but no part number. My tire is 1.26" od, .79" id, and .248" thickness, close to what Singer guarantees will fit a list of machines including the 503a (part number 15287-A). Got any suggestions? Thanks for all the video's!
I'd love to see the "Singer Guarantee" for the tire to fit. I've never come across that before. My understanding is the tire for the 500A & 503A Rocketeer Models is a slightly smaller diameter than the standard 15287 tire. The Singer repairmen told me it has to do with the distance of the pulley from the spindle post. I've had many questions about the 15287 being too big to work properly on those two models of SInger, but yours is the first I've heard about a tire being too small. Huh, that's new to me. In the description below the video, I have a link to the tire I have used for about 12 years. It has always worked fine for me. I can't speak about other tires from other sellers b/c I have never used them. Here is the link I am talking about: www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-model-503a-parts/products/bobbin-winder-tire-friction-wheel-26-mm-x-14-mm-x-6-5-mm-fits-singer-models-500a-503a It has a part number of 322 and is considered a "medium" sized tire. When I first tried the "Standard" size 15287/152871 tire like the one on my 401A I found it too large/fat to work properly and that's when I asked the retired repairmen what to use. Hope that helps and thanks for watching my channel.
Excellent Video, I had no idea what to do with the springs. I was actually changing out the light fixture and had to remove the bobbin winder assembly. I have put it all back together (several times) but I have no "spring action" with my lever. It doesn't matter at what point the screw is in (tighten) I still have no spring action. Would you please help me to fix my problem.
Hey Darla, so sorry to hear this. It's hard for me to say what is wrong without getting my hands on the machine. If there is no spring action you have either missed something and installed it wrong, or have a totally, completely worn out spring (I only had that one time) If you'd like to send me a short video of the bobbin winder movement and some pictures of how you assembled it I would do my best to help if possible. You could also post these on your RUclips channel and send me the link if you want to do it that way.. My email here at the channel is andytube53@gmail.com

Thank you for your instructions. But I have problem with my sewing machine. Machines turns on , it sews it works great and it comes with all parts. It sews it works great but The problem with it is that we couldn’t wind the bobbin that’s about it. I don't know what can I do?
Elizabeth is your sewing machine this model 503A. If the bobbin winder will not work on this model you may need to oil the spindle, replace the friction ring (rubber tire) and/or replace one or both of the springs. This video is part 2 and here is the link to part 1: ruclips.net/video/BWdT7OlGUMg/видео.html
It's the 2 wheels on outside that stop needle from going up and down. First they wouldn't move separate, now they do but they don't click for needle stopping.
Thank you. Very helpful. I have a Singer 500a with a stuck stitch selector K - Special. Have you ever done a video on that? The silver tube will not go up or down so it will only straight stitch and not make use of the built in cams.
Sorry, I have not. It is very common for that model to have "sticky" selectors, lifters and followers. The way they are made it is conducive to having old dried up and varnished oil on many of the moving parts. The first approach is always a good cleaning and oiling. If the problem continues there may be damaged, loose or out of adjustment parts. You can go here and get a free copy of the parts list, with parts diagrams, for the 500: parts.singerco.com/CPpartCharts/5_59999/500A.pdf This can show you all the parts involved with your model. If one is broken/missing it can help to have the part number when looking for a used vintage replacement part. Here you can download a free copy of the original 50-page instruction manual. Sometimes this type of machine must have some controls set a certain way to move other controls. If you don't have this manual it is worth owning: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/1308_500_0.pdf The 500A is one of a few models where the original Service Manual is available free online. It has 46 pages of settings, adjustments and remove/replace instructions with pictures for the original Singer Servicemen. I find a service manual for every model I own/work on. A huge timesaver. Get your manual here: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf One of the nice things about the vintage Singer machines is they can be cleaned, adjusted and repaired. Good Luck, and thanks for watching my channel.
Thanks Andy, I was able to fix the bobbin winder on my new little girl, Miss Holly Dee. She was stuck like Chuck and would not spin. She is good to go now- thank You so much! Karen in Texas
Thanks for watching, Carl. The friction ring on the 500A/503A is smaller than the regular one Singer used. Here is where I buy mine: www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-bobbin-winders-parts/products/bobbin-winder-tire-friction-wheel-26-mm-x-14-mm-x-6-5-mm-fits-singer-models-500a-503a
The 503A I just picked up doesn't have the proper screws for the bobbin winder assembly. I think the last guy who worked on it 20+ years ago just randomly inserted screws. And I think he replaced the motor and wired it to the plug harness wrong. Is it possible to adjust the little post that drives the tire so it doesn't squeeze it so hard?
The rocketeers take a smaller rubber friction ring. Watch@29:10 in the video. I buy mine here: www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-model-503a-parts/products/bobbin-winder-tire-friction-wheel-26-mm-x-14-mm-x-6-5-mm-fits-singer-models-500a-503a
Hey Andy, I’ve looked everywhere but I can’t find a video where you remove and replace the actual bobbin winder. This video only shows the part on its left side. I’ve done everything I can think of but it won’t go back on right. I have a video I made, a poor quality video I might add, and was hoping to email it to you to see if you can see any glaring errors I may have made? Did I mention, I want to cry at this point…..frustration at its finest😂🤦🏻♀️
A poor-quality video is not very helpful, but if you want to post it on your own RUclips Channel and provide a link here in the comments I will look at it. I'm puzzled when you say you can't find where I remove/replace the "actual bobbin winder". Do you mean the spindle and rubber tire part of the bobbin winder? On many of my videos, including this one, I divide the video into chapters with names. If you use a cellphone you can drag a finger along the timeline at the bottom of the video and the chapter names will pop up. If you watch in a browser, like Chrome, you can just move the cursor/pointer along the timeline to see the chapters. Also, in the video description below the video are a list of all the chapter names and the time they start in the video. In this video, starting at @08:51 is the chapter for removing the spindle parts w/ spring and @14:24 is the chapter for reinstalling the spindle parts w/ spring. If I have missed the point of your question, or the spindle and rubber tire are not "the actual bobbin winder" please let me know and I'll try to help.
@@andytubesewing1953 yes, the spindle and rubber tire is what I’m referring to. I took that entire piece off and also that other piece with the smaller spring. Those darn springs have been a really big challenge. I’m not giving up yet though.
HI again, Andy. Well, I have about a month of experience with my 503A and I love it so far. There are still a couple of issues, though, and one related to bobbin winding. That is the interaction between the stop motion wheel and the handwheel. When I loosen the stop motion wheel by turning it CCW while holding the handwheel still, I feel a detent after about 1/4 turn, but I can keep turning it past that point. It's not a solid, sure stop. Often when I wind a bobbin I find the shank still moving, and I have to fool with the stop motion wheel to get it to wind without the shank moving. Also, sometimes it's as if the drive for the bobbin winder doesn't engage. Does this sound like any pathology you are familiar with? I'm thinking mine might be assembled incorrectly, but I don't want to pull it apart without knowing. Thank you!
You're thinking on the correct path, John. Good instincts. Between the stop motion wheel and the handwheel, there is a clamping washer that acts as a clutch. If that washer was put on facing the wrong way it won't work properly. If it was put on facing the correct way but won't work properly then take it off, rotate it 180 deg. and put it back on. The small screw on the stop motion wheel should hit any one of the three pins or posts when turning CCW. That's about 1/8 turn. That pin stops it at the correct place. That's enough to release the clutch so only the handwheel turns the bobbin winder tire and not the needle bar movement. It is very rare that the washer is so worn it needs replacement. To get a diagram view of this and instructions, please download a free copy of the 500/503 Service Manual and look at page 18. The free manual is at this link. sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf Thanks for saving your machine and for watching my channel.

Any idea of why I can only sew 1 inch and top thread breaks. Stitches look good. I have flossed tension used vacuum more concerned that then wheel for bobbin winding but they started same time do you think related?
Hi Andy, I bought a 500a and cleaned her up and she’s running fine except the bobbin winder. I had to replace the old rotted tire and after watching you I knew to get the tire from a good place that knew it was a special size so I think it’s the right one? It’s 26mm x 14x6.5 mm and came from Central Michigan Sewing Supplies. I watched your video carefully and have the springs inserted properly. My problem is the bobbin assembly is not spinning as fast as it should. I can floor it and it still winds super slow. I don’t know what else to do. Can the straight tail of that spring put tension on the metal center wheel the tire is on, making it hard to spin? It doesn’t look bent at all… any ideas would be great Thanks!!
No, I don't think the spring could put enough tension to prevent normal turning of the tire/spindle. That spring with the straight tail actually pushes the tire away from the motor when the lever is tripped, not closer to the motor. If your motor is running at high speed but the spindle is not that sounds like a poor connection between tire & motor shaft, or a dirty/dry bobbin winder spindle to me. If you take the top cover off and put the handwheel in BW mode and engage the BW tire over to the motor shaft (never mind the bobbin or threading) when you run the motor does the tire/spindle turn normally? If you disengage the BW can you just spin the tire with your fingers easily?
@@andytubesewing1953 Hi Andy Happy Easter! So turns out I was that pesky set screw! Loosened it and pushed it against that little spindle that makes it turn and tightened it again and also made sure no grease had gotten on it from the motor gears right there, and now it works fine! I really hope I'm not driving you nuts yet. Thank you again for your time
Singer screws, washers, nuts and bolts are usually of proprietary sizes, not common sizes. They wanted people to go to the Singer Store for repairs, not the hardware store. You probably won't find the exact size washer, but will have to try something close. These measurements are approximate >>> The outside diameter of the washer is 3/8 inch, or .375 inch or 0.9525 centimeters or 9.525 millimeters. The thickness of the washer is 1/16 inch or .0625 inch or 0.15875 centimeter or 1.5875 millimeter. The thickness gauge would be between gauges 17 & 16. Of course the hole in the washer must fit over the hinge screw threads, but should NOT fit over the hinge part of the screw; the smooth part of the screw between the thread and under the head of the screw. The hinge (smooth) part acts as a spacer so the spring can flex and not be pinched. If you end up selling the machine, I want a percentage! (just kidding) Good Luck.
Hmmm.... directly to the right of the tire is another post with a spring on top- I thought that was part of the bobbin winder assembly but you don’t mention it. That spring is broken at the bottom. What is it called and what does it do? Thanks, Andy!
When I look at it, directly to the right of the tire is the end of the motor shaft. The bobbin winder has two springs and I show and discuss both. I guess I'm misunderstanding about a post with a spring on top. You can download a free copy on the Service Manual for models 500/503 that has removal/replace/adjust instructions for this machine. The BW instructions include pictures and are on page 17 sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf I also have a copy of the parts schematic that includes parts number. If you'd like that just email andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask for it (either the 500 or the 503) if you found the part/spring that I can't then you could gif me a part number to help me understand.
Hey Andy, it’s been a minute since reaching out. Hope all is well. I’m watching this video because I found a stylist 834 and when I opened the lid I found the spring to the bobbin winder was detached. Any idea how that spring is put back? I thought if I watched this again, I’d come up with some idea. I have not gone back to the machine since watching the video but I’ll go tinker with it tomorrow. I just thought I’d ask if you happen to know of any videos out there for a stylist 834 that covers this. I also heard they have those infamous gears that often need replacing,, yikes🤦🏻♀️
Sorry, Rhonda, I've never worked on that 834 Stylist. A little too new for me. You can buy and download the Service Manual for $10 here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-834-sewing-machine-service-manual/ if your email did not change I sent you a copy of the Parts Manual I found in my files. Good Luck, and thanks you still watch my channel.
@@andytubesewing1953 I’ll never quit watching your videos. I’ve joined a few vintage machine groups on fb and just let me tell ya, you’re an icon! Hi there, I love your videos. I was given a 503 special from my great grandmother and didn't think I'd be able to find any videos on the specific model but was so happy to stumble upon your channel. I have been using my machine for different projects the past couple of years, but just recently my bobbin winder stopped working. I replaced the rubber ring then after watching this video realized the replacement I got was probably too big. So I ordered the correct size & put it on but it's still not budging. It clicks into place & the ring touches the gear from the handwheel but it just doesn't rotate. I've tried taking it out, cleaning it, oiling it, and nothing works. I was wondering if you might have any suggestions? I appreciate any feedback
So when you took it out to "cleaning it, oiling it" you had your new friction ring on and you held the frame and spun the ring/tire, right? You tested that the tire turns on the spindle so nicely? I think even when everything is installed and before you push the spindle to the right to engage the tire onto the motor shaft, before that you can just grab the top of the spindle and turn it with your fingertips. It should be free to turn. You cleaned it, oiled it and it is NOT engaged against the motor shaft to wind so it is free and easy. If the spindle will not turn is it frozen inside the frame? I think it must turn OK and when you engage the arm to the right to wind you telling me it does not turn. "Not budging". Then something is jamming it and preventing movement. If that is true my guess would be it is underneath the tire, like the lamp wires or the oil shield is moved to the right and when you engage the tire/spindle it gets pinched from below? If the spindle and tire turn when not engaged or out of the machine but not when engaged against the motor shaft you must find the pressure or jam against the tire or bottom of the spindle. The last thought is if there is oil or grease on the end of the motor shaft and the tire can not grip very well, but you said it does not budge at all, so I figured you checked for oil on the ring. BTW, you said the ring touches the "gear from the handwheel" but you mean the ring rests against the threaded end of the motor shaft, not any gear, correct? That's all I can think of, a jam under the ring when engaged. Good Luck.
@@andytubesewing1953 thanks for your quick reply. Yes the ring moves with the spindle freely and I looked but there doesn't seem to be anything obstructing any movement. The only thing that I noticed that looks odd is the threaded piece you mentioned that my ring presses against when engaged looks different than in your video. Almost like the threaded spring or wire is pushed up with it sitting higher than the tip of the shaft. Not sure if that means anything. I reckon I'll have to wait for the sewing shops to reopen to have someone take a closer look. Thank you for your advice, take care
I changed the wheel on the bobbin winder and it filled a couple of bobbins but now starts filling very slow sometimes speeds up but will slow down almost to a stop. I noticed the motor post felt hot also. Do you have any suggestions where I should be looking to figure out what the problem is. Thank you for your help
By wheel, I'll assume you mean the rubber tire/friction ring. The Singer model 503A uses a smaller friction ring than the standard one found on most machines. If you use the standard it can rub on parts and the resistance can heat things up and slow down the winder. Here is a link to the correct friction ring to use: shop.sew-classic.com/Bobbin-Winder-Tire-Ring-smaller-322.htm If that is not the problem then I would try oiling the spindle post. Just a drop of oil as you don't want any oil on the friction ring which would make it slip. Other than these two ideas I can't advise you any other solutions without having the machine in front of me. Good Luck.
The first friction ring I ordered was from Central MI Sewing . I ordered one from shop sew-classic and yea! it works also did a drop of oil on the spindle. Thank you again Pat
I guess you mean the bobbin winder tension disc spring? Part number 45847. I don't know of anywhere to buy a newly made spring. I'd look for the bobbin winder thread tension unit itself to get the spring inside it. This same spring was used on several models; 188, 221, 301, 513, 514,518, 533. Sellers on eBay part out machines and that's where I'd look. Here is example (not saying to buy this one) www.ebay.com/itm/Singer-Sewing-Machine-301a-Parts-Thread-Guide-for-Bobbin/133457130034?hash=item1f12aa3232:g:QPAAAOSwByVe09Kj That spring no. 45847 is inside that part.

Can you tell me where to look. My 500 dial selector knobs (gold and brown) will push in and out but when you try to change the pointer to the letters you want they both seem to just slide around like they are loose on a spindle. I have looked and looked but can't find a video that addresses that issue. I hope this finds you well.
Hi, Pat. So I assume you know that the RED stitch width lever should be set at 3 before you turn any knob. Normally when you push the gold nob in and turn it parts I'll call lifters and followers are engaged. To lift the follower up to the correct cam for the pattern you are choosing and swing it against the cam. If parts are misaligned in there it might not be engaging the lifters and you have nothing but the knob spinning on the spindle. Parts could also be broken or missing. A few possibilities there. Maybe a good cleaning and oiling. Here is a link to a FREE copy of the original Singer Service Manual for the 500/503 models. sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf There are 46 pages of instructions with pictures for adjusting, removing and replacing the parts on the machine. This manual may help you see if the parts are intact and how they work. You can also go here to download a FREE copy of the parts diagram, an exploded view of the machine parts with part numbers (in case you need to buy a missing part): parts.singerco.com/CPpartCharts/5_59999/500A.pdf I do not know of any video about your problem, sorry. What we usually hear about is stuck or "frozen knobs" (quite common) and I often see machines where someone tried to "fix" that problem and gave up and donated the machine. That problem was discussed in a nice video 5 years ago by Archaic Arcane. You may have seen that? You can find that video here: ruclips.net/video/mdaWx1gGZWg/видео.html I'm sorry I can't give you a definitive answer to your problem, but maybe these can help point you in a direction that could help. You give me the confidence to try this. 👍
It seems like I bought it and the "tail" was long enough to bend a little "hook", it's been a while though. I also bought 3 tires on eBay for the 500A/503A but they were the standrd, not smaller one. Well, it sounds like some progress at least. I'm not sure what you mean by "can't get them to engage." Do you think you could post a video of it on your channel? Or email me at my youtube Channel email address of andytube52@gmail.com? That may be a better way to work on this than the comment section.
Today, 1-8-2018, I found out RUclips is holding a comment you sent me because of "bad words". I think maybe you linked a video. My email channel address is andytube53@gmail.com Could you send the video link to me there? I should get the link in the email just fine. Meantime, these handwheel videos on the 404 may help. I think what you are getting is "Needle Creep". Even when you "unlock" the stop motion knob the washer between the knob and main handwheel is making some contact. The needle motion will be erratic and abnormal and can cause thread breakage during the "lockstitch" when there is resistance from the bobbin thread. I would remove the knob, washer, and handwheel, (no need to remove the counterbalance unless you want to) and clean them very well, including the end of the horizontal arm shaft. Reassemble the parts making sure the WASHER IS PLACED CORRECTLY and see if that stops the needle movement when in the unlocked position. The email will be better for continued communications. ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=eZiMaaka5HE ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=hHl96WL1kzA
I just put a new friction tire on my 503A. made adjustments, and wound a bobbin. I must say, this bobbin winding system was not one on Singers best designs....... 🤨
@@andytubesewing1953 is the 403A the same bobbin winder as the 404.?. I really like that one....
Excellent explanation! My 503A came with both springs broken. I'm really grateful you published these videos. Thank you!
Thanks much!
good job I'm glad you found my video and it was helpful thanks for your comment

Here is the link I am talking about: www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-model-503a-parts/products/bobbin-winder-tire-friction-wheel-26-mm-x-14-mm-x-6-5-mm-fits-singer-models-500a-503a
It has a part number of 322 and is considered a "medium" sized tire.

This video is part 2 and here is the link to part 1:
ruclips.net/video/BWdT7OlGUMg/видео.html
You can go here and get a free copy of the parts list, with parts diagrams, for the 500: parts.singerco.com/CPpartCharts/5_59999/500A.pdf
This can show you all the parts involved with your model. If one is broken/missing it can help to have the part number when looking for a used vintage replacement part.
Here you can download a free copy of the original 50-page instruction manual. Sometimes this type of machine must have some controls set a certain way to move other controls. If you don't have this manual it is worth owning: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/1308_500_0.pdf
The 500A is one of a few models where the original Service Manual is available free online. It has 46 pages of settings, adjustments and remove/replace instructions with pictures for the original Singer Servicemen. I find a service manual for every model I own/work on. A huge timesaver. Excellent and informative!
Thank you. Kind of you to comment.

OK!
I still need to take apart that tension and clean. I assume that’s the same as the 401a video I used to clean up a 401 during Covid. I have to decide which one of these to keep… I’m leaning on the 401 even tho I like the looks of the Rocketeer better. Do you have a preference of one over the other? Your video was great changed tire no issue but when I took apart the spring with fish hook and washed missing. The part numbers are 172555 and 172556. I can find spring bit not washer do you know size of my hubby avid collected of nuts bolts screw. So maybe we have something here. He is a auto mechanic so he measure by gauge.
No way this one stays I love this old girl.
Hmmm.... directly to the right of the tire is another post with a spring on top- I thought that was part of the bobbin winder assembly but you don’t mention it.

Here is a link to the correct friction ring to use:
shop.sew-classic.com/Bobbin-Winder-Tire-Ring-smaller-322.htm
If that is not the problem then I would try oiling the spindle post.
Thank you again Pat
a happy ending! thanks for saving a vintage Singer. Good on you Pat.
Do you know where I can find a Singer Sewing Machine Model 6110 Bobbin Winder Spring?
I guess you mean the bobbin winder tension disc spring? Part number 45847. I don't know of anywhere to buy a newly made spring. I'd look for the bobbin winder thread tension unit itself to get the spring inside it. This same spring was used on several models; 188, 221, 301, 513, 514,518, 533. Sellers on eBay part out machines and that's where I'd look.
Here is a link to a FREE copy of the original Singer Service Manual for the 500/503 models. sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf

How funny went threw didn't see any bad words
I just put a new friction tire on my 503A. made adjustments, and wound a bobbin. I must say, this bobbin winding system was not one on Singers best designs....... 🤨
Agreed. A weak spot on this model. It's why I prefer the 403A overall.
@@andytubesewing1953 is the 403A the same bobbin winder as the 404.?. I really like that one.... Don't know what they were thinking putting the rubber tire contact spot at the top of the motor shaft, near the worm gear/textolite gear.. "grease" .uh... not to mention the fiddly springs, and that small adjusting screw has to be in just the right spot. ..
@@connieworcester55 Yes, I think it's a mess, and the 500/503 uses a smaller tire than the standard, too. Yes, the Model 403A (The Queen of SInger HD ZigZAg Machines 😊) has the same BW system, and mostly everything else as model 404. They just added ZZ parts and a pattern selector that allows one-at-a-time snap-in top hat pattern cams. (20+ patterns)

@@andytubesewing1953 Thank you.
Slow speech
That's just my style in the video. Not everyone is as clever as you and some folks need more time to follow along as they do the repair with me. I did not make the video just for you. Most people realize that and just click on the settings and speed up the video to their liking, but there are always a few people who feel the need to criticize. I guess that's just your style? But thank you 🙏 since you not only watched some of this slow speech video but took extra time to leave a comment. How thoughtful of you⭐
