1:02. I noticed that the EM5 Mark iii allows me to change midtones on the curve as well a highlights and shadows. A nice additional feature because I wanted to do that on the EM10 Mark ii but couldn't.
Just got into those lately so this was super helpful. ART bracketing is nifty when dialing in but also hard on the battery. Grainy II seems to do really well outdoors for me. The default Monotone profile can easily take +2 contrast. Also hoping OM Workspace can pick up the filters from the EXIF, on my tablet all seems to be listed as Natural so that was a mess to keep track of. Thanks Rob!
On My E-M1 II for highlight / shadow adjustment there is also a midtone adjustment so it can be done absolutely the same as a PEN-F, but the whole settings with film grain and color filters makes PEN-F unique camera and I love it for that.
Thanks. I’m starting to shoot more B&W with my EM 1 and EM 10. I set both with a B&W custom mode. To get a bit more grain I just increased the iso to 400. But I used your tip plus 6 minus 6 shadow & highlight. And I’m really only using the 25mm F1.8. Cheers.
Great video Rob. I totally forgot you could customize pic profiles in menu. I’ve gotten nice results playing with color filter in monotone + SCP adjustments but I need to add tone tweaks. OM-D can pretty much run with penF after all!
And another thing I learned from you..is you can increase the grain even more,,,by selecting 25600 ISO...then increase the shutter speed to darken the shot...
Hi Rob, I don’t have a Pen F, I have an E-M10 III, but i was fascinated by the fact that you actually dialed in different color from straight Olympus. Now for my question: I really like the “Light & Airy” look that many wedding photographers use now and I have talked with 2 wedding photographers and they insist that you have to have a big Nikon, or Canon camera, plus you MUST edit in Lightroom. Well, L&A is basically less contrast, more light, and emphasis on different colors. What is your reaction on this subject? John Parks
I don't do weddings but Jimmy Cheng at Red35 does for a living using the OM-1 and pro glass. He would be the better person to ask. That said, the L&A is mostly in the post processing. So some photo editing will be required. You can capture in-camera a similar look choosing high-key gradation and/or maybe a soft focus art filter.
I have an E-M5 Mk II and it seems the B&W Grain II filter already has the -6 shadow +6 highlight curve applied to it. If I compare a Monotone image with the curve applied to B&W Grain II, the shadows and highlights are the same, only the grain has been added. If I apply the -6/+6 curve to the B&W Grain II it looks terrible. Anyway, great tips and I am now enjoying the Monotone settings.
WOW...super informative video !!!!! I have my camera set up per your ep 49. I use a lot of manual lenses so the buttons on top of my camera are set to "peaking" and Magnify per your ep 49 video. I do have an OMD mark 10 II. Seeing that I have changed my function 2 button to either peaking or magnify (sorry can't remember which is which). How can I access the "highlight and shadow" menu that was the default feature for function button two to duplicate what you have described in the video @ time slot of approx 8:14 in the video ??
Hi Rob and thanks for this very informative video. On em-1 mkii you can adjust the midtone curve by pushing Info button and using the dials. Not working on the em-10 unfortunately.
I'm experimenting with INFRARED by adding the Hoya R72 filter on my E-M5ii. I have to work-out the fine tuning of the camera, but initially it looks dramatic.
Thanks for another informative video, own an OM-D 10 M2 not a big fan of the Art filter black and white grainy setting, but like using Art filter sepia setting I get the tonal range that I feel matches my film shooting days more with better sharpness and tonal range. Wish Olympus would add those settings to just the black and white art filter in an update instead of having to do it in post-production software.
Hello Rob, Excellent comparison of the profiles and available options for us OMD users. So would it be correct to assume for Pen F Profile 3, it would be the same setting as Monotone in the other cameras but with a red filter applied? Thanks again for these tutorials. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
Hi Rob, Thanks for al these great tutorials about my favourite camera. My question: I have chosen another function for fn2. Is it possible to activate highlights/shadows (or multi function) in another way then through fn2?
wait wait wait, let me get this right. on the em10ii you are setting the hi/sh in monotone, then applying just the grain from the art filter? all in camera? I can't do that in my em1iii (it takes on the whole cheesy filter) nor can I do it in workspace. Theoretically can you apply grain to other profiles (natural, muted, etc) in camera? If so that would be a game changer for me and I'd buy an em10ii as a small EDC jpg camera. I've used other 'film sims' I believe derived from you (fuji chrome, velvia, etc). I'm very impressed with their subtle magic they do with the olympus color science. Currently renting a fuji xt30 and not at all impressed with the colors/recipes in comparison.
You can't apply grain to any of the other profiles in-camera. However, in Workspace you can apply grain. In the Edit Panel, from the Picture Mode drop down menu, select "Monochrome Profile". You'll see three additional drop down menus pop in. One is for "Film Grain Effect".
Thanks, great explanation! The Fn2 button on the OM-D makes it simple. What about the Contrast setting on the super control panel? Increase that? The video looked great ... was it the -6/+6 setting you mentioned?
Thanks. Yes, I typically do +2 sharpening and +2 contrast in good light. In poor light, I turn sharpening down to -2 sometimes. Just depends. That's what I love about our cameras.
Hi. Nice video. But my question is if there is a method too edit the raw file from omd or pen cameras so the workspace program read it like one from pen-f? It would let you too edit the photos just like on the pen-f camera... Am I right? Take care Stay healthy
I don't think you can change the file to look like another camera. You need to convert your OMD .orf file to .tiff. Then Workspace will have more options like the PenF.
Any way to do multiple selective color? For example, graffiti on the wall has 3 colors (red, yellow, green). can you just highlight these colors and make everything else B&W. If so, a tutorial on this would be amazing.
Thank you for this very informative video Rob. I'm using the OMD Em10 m2 now, and even though I'm really loving the pen F, I just simply can't justify a reason to upgrade :( ah well. Another thing - do you think you can give some tips on how to improve the Olympus colour so that you achieve something similar to the Fuji film simulation colour?
Thanks. It's tough to do on the OM-D cameras. They don't offer much in the way of adjusting colors like the PenF. I think the only way to get fuji colors is to get a fuji. I've seen some attempts to get the colors right with photoshop, but it's not the same.
Hi Rob, Thanks for the helpful video. On my PEN-F, using either mono profiles 1 or 2 , without grain, my JPEGs are nowhere near as sharp the the associated RAW files. Am I doing something wrong, or is this to be expected?
When I adjust these settings and I change my color back to natural do I need to reverse the settings again? Or does the camera saves it just to the monochrome setting?
@@RobTrek I mean the adjustment of the highlights, when I do this wil it affect pictures taken on natural or only on monotoon (where I made the changes)?
@@Jerome.Du.Quartier No. The h/s will stick when you change picture profiles. I usually setup a myset for each picture mode if I want different h/s settings across picture modes.

Thanks for all the footwork figuring this out, Rob! My folks just picked up an E-10 II so this’ll come in handy.
