Hi and thanks for your question! Unfortunately, you couldn't measure charcoal samples according to ASTM / ISO with PMA, but the instrument could be set up in a way that would allow for quick QC measurements.

Used a manual PMCC for years. Made in 1944 semi-dangerous. The thing with this unit, the glass thermometer is very delicate. There is a small clip on it and it may end up in your sample. More viscous materials, like asphalt does cause this unit trouble. You will have to warm the sample to roughly 100c. The rubber sleeve that turns the propeller will slip and not turn if the sample is cold.

Thank you for your valueable comment. Asphalt or bitumen samples are solid at ambient temperature and must be heated up before measurement of the flashpoint.
The PMA 5 comes with a special bitumen test program where the heating block of the PMA 5 can be set to a certain temperature to keep the filling sample temperature before
the stirring and measurement of the flashpoint starts. After the completion of the test the PMA 5 will cool down the heating block to the temperature which was set before in the
bitumen program to avoid that the sample becomes solid.
