Why Keratoconus is prevalent in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries?
It's been said that the environment plays a role: Hot & Humid climate, dust and altogether make people rub their eyes, which can be the reason for Keratoconus.
The keratoconus condition makes the normal cornea become conical with the tissue making it elastic and becomes thin. The stiffness of the cornea reduces due to the interwoven structure losing its strength and density. When you rub the eyes, further chemicals get released and that weakens the cornea even more.
Known causes of Keratoconus
- Eye rubbing
- keeping hands on eyes while Sleeping
- Wiping eyes
- Family history
There are still unknown reasons.
Eye rubbing is the known reason so please avoid eye rubbing.
Keratoconus is a progressive condition. Early identification is the key.
The following type of people have to do screening tests to find out the presence of keratoconus
- If you have Allergies, Asthma
- Family history
- If you are affected by Glares, Ghost images
- Frequent changes in glasses/power
There are treatments based on the level of the condition.
Consult your Eye Doctor and do not rub your eyes.
