Its better than 90% of the music you guys talk about. Its only considered weak because of the quality of their other releases. Better than Presence.

How many bands would love for this to be their BEST album. Just another example of Zep being better than everyone else.

I also have a contrarian opinion of this album. It's my third favorite Led Zeppelin album behind Led Zeppelin IV and Physical Graffiti. They were bold enough to go in a different direction and it's the sign of a truly talented band. I love hard rocking Led Zeppelin, but I don't need to hear it 24/7. Unlike LZ IV and PG, it's not perfect so, I give it 8.5/10 and here are the reasons why:
In The Evening: I love the simple riff, the eeriness of the opening, the lyrics, etc. It's a definite favorite.
South Bound Saurez: It's not a favorite but it's a great segway into Fool In The Rain.
Fool In The Rain: It's a fun and multi-layered, which might explain the length. And Jimmy Page's solo puts it over the top for me. It's also another favorite Zeppelin song of mine
Hot Dog: Hate it w/a passion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carouselambra: It's a gem someone once called JPJ's Stairway to Heaven.
All of My Love: I think it's a sweet and sad ballad and the musical arrangement is pretty good. I see nothing wrong w/this song.
I'm Gonna Crawl: It's definitely not a favorite but, compared to Hot Dog, it's a f***ing materpiece!
I like all three of the leftover tracks, Darlene, Ozone Baby and Wearng and Tearing, better than Hot Dog. If two of these songs were on the album instead of Hot Dog and I'm Gonna Crawl, my 8.5 would probably jump to a 9.5. If I had to choose which songs would go on this album and the succession, it would be:
    In The Evening (Starter)
    South Bound Saurez
    Fool In The Rain
Darlene (Replace Hot Dog because it has a Jerry Lee Lewis 50s style to it)
Wearing and Tearing ( I love this song and would be a decent segway into Carouselambra)
    Carouselambra
    All of My Love (Closer)

This is why I love The Contrarians, so many differing opinions but totally respectfully communicated. I love the album and for a band as great as LZ, that it ranks so low shows how really great they were. It was a risky different direction for them and it paid off in some ways but let a lot of older fans down. I was a younger fan it really works well for me.

My first and favourite Zep album...I also recall my wife at the time being totally smitten/entranced by 'In the Evening' and playing it over and over through the nights of partying lol. To touch on what Martin says regarding the production; some of the truley greatest sounding albums came out during that cusp of time before the digital revolution when analog technology had finally peeked. Amazing Bonham drum sounds! I feel some recording engineers forgot how to record drums moving into the 80's

Nope, a lot of people, including musicians, thought were able to replace a bleeding and sweating drummer with computersoftware. And you know what? They did not want to admit it made the music suck.

"Wearing & Tearing" is the only top-tier track from the Coda album - - it would have been a fantastic substitute for "Hot Dog" on the In Through the Out Door album.

Not sure if you've seen the DVD that they put out, I think it's Earl's Court, maybe Royal Albert, but they open with We're gonna Groove and it absolutely smokes. Might change your opinion. I Love all the Zep albums. including ITTOD, They each have their own personality.

I forgot about "We're Gonna Groove" - - it's decent but still not top-tier Led Zeppelin. I didn't know they had ever performed it live though. I have a DVD of one of the big UK music festivals from the late 80's or early 90's (Glastonbury? - - I don't remember) in which Page & Plant do a rendition of "Wearing & Tearing."

Relative to Zeppelin's entire catalogue which is completely full of classic after classic, its not a surprise this album falls towards the bottom. The first six albums are an incredibly high bar to top. So this album is not better than their first six albums but it is better than Presence and Coda. Every great band evolves musically and I think this is a really good album by any standard, even Led Zeppelin's. To give this album some perspective, I've heard 5 of 7 songs played on classic rock radio, 3 of which were on constant rotation along with three dozen other Zeppelin songs.

    • @danielvysocky2716

      absolutely agree 💯
I'd only replace "South Bound Saurez" with "Darlene" (yes I enjoy "Hot Dog" as I appreciate the intentional comedic homage).
"Wearing And Tearing" would not fit on ITTOD despite it being a great song in the vein of "Wanton Song"

  • @reckia

I would give it a 7.5. I actually think it has stood the test of time better than any of their other albums. I find I listen to it more than any other Led Zeppelin album, even the ones I like better, like II and Houses Of The Holy. I like that Martin pointed out how the inner sleeve changes color when you add water to it!

Mentioned this before. But, that middle section in "Carouselambra" is one of Zep's best moments. Jimmy comes in with that loud, angry guitar that shakes the room. Love that! It's like he was saying to JPJ, "Hey enough of your synths, I'm still here with my guitar!"

  • @moodlefyful

John Paul Jones did amazing work on this album, John Bonhams drums sound great....It's a good album, love the breakdown & guitar solo on 'In the evening'....different vibe & sounds, It's a yay for me! In saying that, it would be at the bottom of my list of Zeppelin albums.

First off my 3 fav LZ albums are PG, Presence & Houses, and although I love their entire catalogue, I'm also totally burnt out on LZII & IV. iTtOD is a very refreshing album, dark, moody, heavy and I enjoy it a lot. I've never been a big fan of Carouselambra which to me overstays its welcome (I often compare it to Rush's Camera Eye which has the same problem for me), but I don't dislike that song either. probably more than to any other LZ album, this is the one I come back to the most. I'd give it a solid 8/10. Cheers.

"Carouselambra" (hope I spelled that correctly) has always been a great underrated epic track - - the synths and proggy elements gave a good indication of where the band's predominant sound may have gone had they continued recording going into the early 1980's. It is too bad that the XYZ project never panned out either.

100% agree. Really shows the depth of JPJ's songwriting/arrangements and Page even sounds great on this track. It was rumored that if Zep had been able to tour the US in 1980-1981 that they were planning to have this song on the setlist. What might have been. Next to Achilles this has become my 2nd favourite track from the band, with Ten Years Gone close behind.

In 1979, I was 12 years old. I bought this album, and played it continuously, as I didn't have many albums at the time. So, it has a special place for me. The remastered album really improves the sound quality, especially with Bonham's drums. Big difference from the muddy sounding original release.

Not sure what the confusion is all about regarding Carouselambra... Plant is describing the "ride" ...the carousel...that was his experience with the band up until that point...the ups and downs... the lyrics read like poetry. For me easily among his best lyrically.

I've always liked this album by Zeppelin. To me it was the precursor to that 80's style hard rock( think Whitesnake, Billy Squire, Loverboy etc.) between the drums, synths and production. Just listened to "In the evening" on the way home from work tonight. They would've been my first concert that year until Bonzo died . IMHO I'd give it a out a 7 out of 10. I was going into 9th grade when this came out.

The weird latin rhythms on this album makes it a proto latin rock album without sounding annoying or “too Santanish“. I think this has to be a precursor to the 90s latin rock explosion. Im pretty sure Maldita Vecindad, Café Tacuba or Los Fabulosos Cadillacs were listening closely. Carouselambra is mind blowing and theres nothing bad on the album. Groundbreaking, probably a 8.5 or 9 of out 10. Being heavy is not the goal here, just being cool.

  • @grimtraveller7923
    @grimtraveller7923 Год назад

    I've always liked this album........
It was the third Zeppelin album I heard, after PG and HOTH and although it wasn't particularly heavy even though I was gagging for all things heavy back in the summer of 1980, I was already used to Zeppelin's "diversity alongside the heaviness" way of doing albums, so I never saw it as a disadvantage. Had I listened to all their albums up to this point, I might've been a little underwhelmed. As it happens and thankfully so, I didn't get a chance to be.
The only song I don't like on the album is the closer, "I'm gonna crawl" and no one can tell me I never gave it a chance. I tried from 1980 through to the end of the 90s and then decided I am trying no more.
But the rest of the songs are cool. I like "Hot Dog", a kind of baby brother to the Beatles' "Act Naturally," and I think Carouselambra is the last of the great Zeppelin songs, an absolute barnstormer and a great place to end. I also have always liked "All my love" ¬> I liked it decades before I found out what inspired it.
I like all the Zeppelin albums that came before this more than I like ITTOD, but that doesn't mean much because I like to take an album on its own merits and from that viewpoint, this is an album that always scores highly with me.

Love this album actually. It tends to get ragged on yes, but with a catalogue as strong as Zeppelins, and in comparison to just their albums, it is indeed one of the weaker ones. Yet the production is better than many or all of the others imho. I still clearly remember hearing it as a 12 year old and loving it, and then hearing of Bonhams passing so admittedly it holds sentimental value as I am/was a huge Bonzo fan. In Through The Out Door is a solid 8.5/10 for me...only because I don't care for Hot Dog. Great episode Contrarians! \m/ \m/

The heavy reverb on Plant's vocals is annoying on this album. Not sure why they went that direction. It's a high mix, short tail (tight room) reverb. It's why you can't tell what he''s saying in Caroselambra.

Outside of Zeppelin IV, I don't think any of the Led Zep albums were perfect, so this one's no different. I'm not a huge fan of Hot Dog or South Bound Suarez. But I'm Gonna Crawl is a huge step up from Tea For One. If you listen to classic rock radio long enough, you're bound to hear "Fool In The Rain" and "All of My Love" on any given day and they still sound fresh to me.
I think Ozone Baby would have been a fine replacement for Hot Dog. Carouselambra is my favorite on the record - always has been. While the album on a whole might be "lower-tier" Led Zeppelin, it's still fantastic compared with other bands. I'd give it at least an 8 out of 10.

  • @danielbowden6330

I do like this album; however, Ozone Baby would have helped significantly. I do have a few questions. Were any of the variants sold more than others? Also, were the variants sold equally in all areas of the county? For example, did the South get more copies of variant A and the North more variant B?

7.5/10 for me. Some days it feels a little long in the tooth. Like, it could’ve used a little more of punch like “In the Evening” has in other spots throughout the LP. That would probably make it better for me. Great songs like “I’m Gonna Crawl”, “Carouselambra”, “Fool in the Rain” . . I like “Hot Dog”. It’s not nearly as bad as we all claim.

It drives me nuts the way the epithet “mellow” is so often applied on channels like this. It seems to be used as a one size fits all label for anything that’s not balls to the wall heavy or complex, or is less so than usual for the band in question.
To me “mellow” is Perry Como or Johnny Mathis, it’s someone in canary yellow pyjamas, a paisley dressing gown and chequered slippers, sipping on a small sherry and listening to their “L.P.s” on their “radiogram”. I don’t know, maybe that is how you guys listen to your music.
Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa, Wichita Linesman, Son of a Preacher Man - I don’t even consider those songs “mellow”, it would be an insult.
    Maybe it’s just me.
Anyway, on the album, I love it. Does it give me what I really want from Led Zeppelin - I’d have to give it a 6/10 for that. How does it stand taken on its own - 9/10, and that’s the one that counts for me.

I do not agree with any of these experts. Only a true connoisseur knows that Led Zeppelin music cannot simply be catalogued or put in order. They are unique because they were extremely versatile.
A member of Deep Purple said they could play the music genre they wanted and do it well and not look bad doing it.
The real experts, One said (and I'm not talking here about Rolling Stone magazine bad reviews, they apologaised years later... Jajaj).....
"Confirms my long-held belief that this is a real good art-rock band", ..(after all this years? , Interesting)....
while "the lollapalooza hooks on the first side confirms the world's long-held belief that this is a real good hard rock band"
Zeppelin is about the emotional state and type of mood of the moment because "Theres not a bad Led Zeppelin song" ....
BUT, if in music what matters are the Numbers (although I don't think so):
ITTOD " was a big commercial success, reached number one on billboard, and top ten in several countries, and was nominated for best album at the American music awards"
...... Not bad for a minor album, don't you think so??

This album couldn't be more hopeless if it tried, Zeppelin trying to be modern, wearing modern clothes does not make you modern & was the absolute death of Zeppelin, hate this album.

Garbage album. Best thing that happened to them was breaking up after this.

Say that to John Bonham’s family. You are an idiot. Too bad the best thing that happened to you was not an abortion.

Huge fan of the mighty Zep, although I've always wonder how someone may like ITTOD, sorry guys, it is cheesy, greasy messy, a complete fail, one of the worst albums ever made.

My only disagreement are the effects around all of you...
