I usually play my student's instrument early into our lessons routine, so I can do EXACTLY THIS for them. I like to know whether or not the student is handicapped by an instrument with poor intonation. Among the thousand (or more) instruments I have seen in my teaching career, I can only remember 2 that were so terrible, that I had the student take them back for an exchange.
Any tuner should be fine, you may get some slightly anomalous readings from bari, but try to play as consistently as possible, long enough for the note to register. Also try adjusting dynamics slightly, nothing too extreme, it may pick up better at particular volumes, but really any device should work.
