  • For those of you who have at some point purchased a tarot or oracle deck with a matte or rose petal finish on the cardstock, you may have noticed that sometimes, straight out of a new box, the cards stick to each other a bit, and don’t shuffle very well due to increased friction between the surface of each of the cards. There is an at-home solution for this. Let's talk about how you can make your own version of an anti-set-off-spray powder, which is what industrial printing presses use as a slip agent. Following the method instructed here can help to significantly reduce shuffling friction.

    00:23 Why matte and rose petal finish decks tend to have more friction

    02:48 How anti-set-off-spray is used in the printing industry
    03:24 Applying anti-set-off-spray powder to your cards will resolve the friction issue in your matte or rose petal finish cards
    03:38 A case for why making your own anti-set-off-spray powder at home is better than trying to buy it
    04:24 You’ll need: 1/4 tsp. of cornstarch + pinch of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). If you want to replace these ingredients with are starch flours, do research to confirm that the pH level of your final mixture is between 7 and 9
    04:38 Caveat for making your own calcium carbonate powder (eggshell powder) at home
    05:22 Personal findings: calcium carbonate not necessary; sodium bicarbonate is a good replacement
    05:48 Why the baking soda works in this powder to help add slippage and glide to your matte finish cards
    06:06 Fun incidental magical-mystical properties of using baking soda and/or crushed eggshells
    06:30 Demonstration of the application process begins
    08:38 Conceptualize application as gently rubbing lotion into the pores of that matte finish
    10:46 White starchy powder does not have any negative impacts on the coloring of your cards
    11:25 Another reminder to be meditative in your approach and to be gentle with the application
    11:59 Continuously gather and separate the cards of the deck, and shuffling to get the powder evenly disbursed, rubbing any residual powder gently into the pores of that matte finish on your cards
    13:26 Some more insights into the anti-set-off-spray powder and how it’s used during the paper printing and production process
    14:02 Gently rubbing residual powder in between the edges of the gilding
    14:36 Ingredients in the industrial commercial grade version of the powder is the same as the ingredients you’re using to make your own version of the powder
    15:46 Showing immediate results of the powder application and how it has loosened the cards
    16:03 This is also a great way to bond with a new deck, especially one that was initially unwieldy to shuffle or work with
    16:13 Continued handling of each and every individual card to evenly disburse the powder and making sure it seeps into the pores of that finish
    17:26 You only need to apply this process once to fix the friction issue, replicating a standard production process that might have been overlooked or under-applied at the factory (so take your time, be patient with the process, and do it thoroughly that first time ^_^*)
    18:22 Reminder: Make sure you’ve removed all jewelry from your hands when you do this, so you don’t inadvertently scratch your cards
    19:06 Final steps to the process to ensure that the powder has been fully absorbed into the finish of your cards
    20:20 A few concluding tips and reminders
    21:21 Why the initial slight friction and resistance in matte and rose petal finish decks is common and how this simple do-it-yourself powder can remedy that

    FYI: Another approach is to buy fanning powder, which consists primarily of zinc stearate ("zinc soap"). Magicians use it on their playing cards as a lubricant to reduce the friction. At the time of this posting I haven't tried it yet, but it's been added to my Amazon shopping cart! 😀

    You are very kind to make and post a video about this. It made me smile. I would have worked with them until the stickiness resolved itself and never thought to complain. I do enjoy a deck mod though. The time I spend with decks I decide to trim or color the edges always brings a deeper relationship, so I will try this. Thank you again for your creative practice, for sharing your tarot knowledge this way and for your kindness.

    Wow! Thank you! I tried this out today on the deck that is the worst culprit in my collection. It has made such a difference! Brilliant! This deck used to stick and clump in the worst way and now I can overhand it perfectly. (I used just cornstarch and baking soda). 🧡

    I wonder if a super fluffy makeup brush would provide a more even application? Like the kind youd use to brush away a setting powder after applying concealer.

      Ooh! Yeah! That would probably mimic a "spray" effect a lot better than me sitting here doing what I'm doing lol! What I learned was the typical method of application is spray. It's what best assures an evenly applied thin coating. A makeup brush totally makes sense!

    Tried a few shakes of magician's fanning powder I found in my old box of tricks from childhood. Put deck in a gallon ziplock bag, use much less than the corn starch. Works like a charm and quickly. Smooth enough to ribbon spread on a tablecloth. Really. If you're interested, there are a few more details I can describe.

    How does this compare to using fanning powder (zinc stearate)? That's been my go to solution for years, and I only have like one or two decks I'm still not happy with, but I don't want to give up on them 😭
    EDIT: I just saw the note at the end of your pinned comment, but if anyone else has tried both, please let me know!

    Just a little confused here. 1/4t. calcium carbonate plus 1/4t. cornstarch so now I have 1/2t. Am I using the full 1/2t. mixture or just a 1/4t. of the mix? Thank you.

    • @BenebellWen
      @BenebellWen  Год назад +5

      Oops, sorry if I wasn't clear. In total I only use 1/4 teaspoon of powder for the application. Full stop. Now... what that 1/4 tsp. consists of can vary and that depends on what you have readily available. Cornstarch is probably what most people have available, so go with almost a full 1/4 tsp. of cornstarch plus pinch of baking soda. OR you can go for 1/4 tsp. of tapioca flour, which is another ingredient I experimented with and found worked quite well. In that case it'd be 1/4 tsp. tapioca + pinch of baking soda. OR you can get wild and do a combination, like a little bit of tapioca flour, a little bit of semolina, a little bit of all-purpose white flour, and some cornstarch plus finely crushed eggshell powder, all equal to only 1/4 tsp.
      I don't go more than 1/4 tsp. of powder at a time for the application because too much and it's going to be a powdery mess. =) There will be way too much loose powder all over your cards. But any less than 1/4 tsp. then I'm not sure there's enough for it to work. =/ Sigh... Goldilocks amount. =)

    If anyone in NZ is curious, I was able to find the anti off-set spray at a local printing supply company here in NZ (although I can't find a smaller quantiy than 2KG 😅If anyone in NZ wants to go in halvsies with me (or tenthsies, etc) let me know.
    Alternatively, you might be able to contact a smaller off-set printing company in your local area and ask to bring your cards in and get them sprayed (and teach others about tarot in the process) :)

    • @BenebellWen
      @BenebellWen  Год назад +1

      It is not rose petal, but the printing house Departed somewhat from how they made my previous editions of SKT, so there is a noticeable difference in the matte finish. It is not quite as buttery and smooth gliding straight out of the box as previous editions. So I had to troubleshoot and find solutions. 😅

      I don't keep cornstarch in the house. Will it just work with baking soda? What about talcum powder?

    • @BenebellWen
      @BenebellWen  Год назад +2

      Before answering, I grabbed a high gloss deck that I have from the shelf and tried it on half the deck. I am going to say no it doesn't really work on high gloss, because the starch powder doesn't seem to want to get absorbed into the finish. So it just sits on top of the gloss. Yes, the cards are immediately much easier to shuffle. And they no longer stick to each other. However, now I have cornstarch and baking soda everywhere, and it isn't absorbing or disappearing into the finish the way it easily does with matte finish or even rose petal finish. So no. I would not try this on high gloss cards. Especially a high gloss deck with black borders, which is what I used to test! 😂😂😂 Oh man, that cornstarch is never coming off my high gloss black bordered cards....

    • @BenebellWen
      @BenebellWen  Год назад +3

      No, I would not do it with baking soda alone. Chemistry. The baking soda needs to react to the starch. I have tried a whole bunch of different starches and flours from my kitchen. I have not tried talcum powder, and do not have any talcum powder at home.
      One thing to do is go online and look up the pH level of the ingredients you want to use. Keep the final powder pH between 7 and 9.

    Benebell Wen, do you know anything or have any opinions on the supernatural phenomenon called, 'The Synchronicity'? Jung spoke of it.
    IMO it is when endless coincidences keep occurring in the Universe, thus communicating a sort of 'code' and messages from some powerful time-manipulating supernatural entity to the observer, which usually (not always) only observers can notice.
    Ty in advance if so.
