It may be surprising but back in the day the word concussion was never used. In my day it was called “ you got your bell rung” no one ever missed games because of head injuries. It seems so crazy now.

What now seems reckless was understandable years ago b/c we didn’t know better. I ‘played’ HS football and enjoyed so much played mud bowl - tackle football w/o pads/helmets. Now it would be crazy b/c research is clear on link between concussions & CTE.

Totally agree. The phrase "got your bell rung" was used often on hard hits. Some guys took that as a badge of honor that they played hard. No one knew the science behind it then.

The 85 bears was my team. I was a superfan. Besides having the greatest player to ever play the game (IMO) Walter Payton, it had the greatest team and I think saved the NFL from obscurity in which it was headed.
I'm and old guy that morns the loss of so many on that team. I almost cried when Payton made the live announcement of his cancer. I prayed for him every night, but also all the others that are now suffering for their life and aggressive play that made them the best.
I will continue to pray for the souls we've lost from that team as well as those that are still here. The NFL and Players Association owe players more than just a minimum pat on the back and a bottle of pain pills. These teams that are building Billion Dollar Stadiums need to be spending Billions of dollars on players that have given their lives, literally, to the game.

When people wear a helmet they believe they are "protected" and start launching themselves head first at other players (with head up). This was taught from from the earliest levels until recently.

Perspective: It is a great game that focuses on individual and team effort. It builds a work ethic, teaches the value of trust an fellowship. No other game I know has that paramount dynamic, team effort.
All this from someone that suffers many of these malady. I gave up the game in college because I nearly killed a guy, a QB ...
I would add few of my peers played with my reckless zeal and the greater portion of former players never suffer these ill effects. A great deal can be said for starting boys too young, but that attaches to so many sports, even soccer.
All things considered I wish I had stuck with baseball... But football has played large in my life for the best. Again, perspective...

@@hugh-johnfleming289 "the greater portion of former players never suffer these ill effects"-- I wish you were right but that's not what the research is saying. Football is going to become like boxing-- a sport for poor folks in desperate circumstances to put their body on the line and change their families' fortunes. That doesn't mean it's right. These guys shouldn't kill their brains for our entertainment.

You can't say that it's so dangerous when most people who play this game end up not having cte!!! It's from concussions!!!
But to say this game is so dangerous is not correct!!! If you play the game the correct way tackling with your head up and not using your head as a weapon then you will be fine!!! This is a great game

@@tylerminich9998 Dude, I'm sorry, there's still no reliable test to detect CTE while someone is alive so we don't know how many active players have it. Of dead players whose brains they have been able to test, the number is 90%. 90 fucking percent. That sport is not safe.

“I didn’t know getting hit in the head was bad for my brain.” Saying that makes somebody question whether the person had a brain in the first place. What normal thinking person would think getting hit in the head numerous times was not going to have consequences. All you have to do is look at boxers, the term punch drunk comes to mind. Punch drunk doesn’t mean drinking too much punch either.

It’s the price you pay if you want to play football, box, or any other heavy contact sport. You are not obligated to play the sport. We all know the dangers of repeated head trauma. People will always play for the fun, money, fame. But, after it’s over, you really can’t blame anyone but yourself for deciding to play.
