Well you can see it again and again for free on the Pixar channel right now. They've uploaded the entire thing. I think it might get taken down soon though since a lot people think they only uploaded to get more traction upon being nominated for an Oscar

Chinese culture is extremely family oriented, so I can assume this is a powerful representation of Chinese virtue and cultural values.
My stepmother is from Taiwan, and has been helping me learn Mandarin, and teaching me about the Chinese culture. So, I find shorts like these not only fascinating, but informative, as it is a lens into the life of a family of Chinese descent.

Bao (包) also has similar pronunciation (in Chinese) of 寶 (treasure, or "pearl in the palm" or "apple in someone's eyes"). I just thought that it was such an awesome coincident (maybe it was named intentionally?) which gave the name of this short film another huge punch...

I think there is more humor in the name of this film than even the director may have intended. Since bao 包 (the steamed dumpling) and bao 寶 (jewel but also baby) are actually pronounced with two different tones, I'll assume any word pronounced "bao" is fair.
Bao 包 itself can also mean to encircile, wrap, put into a package. This may point to the mother's wish to keep her son penned in. Bao written 飽 can mean "to be full" after one has eaten, so maybe it also means that the mother felt very full after she ate him. Bao written 抱 means to hug, which she does a lot in this film. Bao written 保 means to protect, and she certainly wants to protect him from the world. I could go on.....

I have one son and I know one day I have to let him go ! :( I will continue to cook for him and give him all my affection! He looks like a curly hair sheep but his girlfriend made him cut those precious curls! Thank God he will always have love for his mom ! We saw this together and he laughed and said ,"Hey mom that 's you! " I said to him," you wont forget your mom will you?" He answered with a hug ,"NEVER!" :' )

In Taiwan where I grew up Xiaolongbao had to be steamed in a basket with a specific thin cloth underneath them, not a lettuce leaf as was depicted here; also, the people in the film gobbled them up pretty quickly while that'd be ill-advised since they're filled with hot fluid in real life, so I doubt that they are xialongbao.

It's about the Chinese saying "I'd rather give birth to a bun than give birth to you" that Chinese parents say to their bad children. Her eating the bun symbolizes this message, that she knew there was nothing she could do about her real life child, and if the child was a bun she could just eat it and at least solve hunger. It's about the helplessness as a mother. The bun was simply used as a metaphor throughout the story, and her child was a real human being.

To be honestly, as a Chinese live in Beijing, this short has no emotional connection with me and my friends, even most of the audience in the movie theater, it's a American Chinese family story maybe. Hollywood storytellers has a strange confidence and narrow methodology to tell stories of other cultures they never pay real attention. They just focused on the "differences" instead of "root".
However, I still feel happy and proud that a Chinese Storyteller can direct a short film at my favorite animation studio.Congratulations!

I watched it, recently, with my Mom. We didn't really understand what "BAO" was about. I didn't even know that the one caring for the dumpling was a mother. We didn't understand why she ate the dumpling in the end. That and a real copy of the dumpling showing up the next day. Someone, I know, claimed that it has something to do with family in Chinese culture. Usually Pixar shows a funny short, like in the Ice Age movies with the squirrel chasing a nut.
