Ignore hateful comments - just negative people who get pleasure from putting others down. Easier said than done, and that’s why we can’t have nice things. Wow another great video, I was so cross when you said people were leaving those horrible type of comments. *hugs* to you and your whole family.
I totally agree with you about the phone lines being a great backup. There will be a time when the internet goes down due to an emergency and/or power outage and most people will have no idea what is going in. Where I live we can no longer get land lines at all. So I have a few, nice SW & HAM radios so at least I might be able to hear what is happening if it's long term.
As far as fax technology, without getting too specific, there are still parts of the government that only uses secure faxes to transmit certain types of information as it's by far still the most secure in that arena.

Worked for the state public safety agency here in TX for over 30 years. The first seven were in the communications service handling telephone calls from the public and other LE agencies, lots of faxing documents. That was in the mid 80s. There as a second device duplexed with the fax, called a TDD, it was used to communicate with deaf persons. Maybe TDD was the precursor for texting? Still keep a fax machine in storage just in case it might be needed, next to it is a box of ballpoint pens and several pads of lined tablets. I really enjoy your videos!

Despite the availability of e-mails and secure document capabilities customers feel better sending sensitive stuffs via fax when in fact we get them via e-mail from e-fax service. Although the e-mails are secured via TLS during transmission to our e-mail servers. Faxes will be around for few more years.

I was lucky when I bought a Portastudio from Canada that it has a jumper you could reposition to swap back from 110v to 240v. Good job I thought of that before simply plugging it in in my excitement! Great repair job. The printer at work used to receive faxes and most of the time all we got were the equivalent of spam emails today. Offers of cheap holiday packages where you had to send the money off first and stuff like that. Beware of anyone trying to sign you up for a time share deal on a Spanish island! As for stupid people with idiotic comments, sadly these knobheads live amongst us but Darwin usually ensures they don’t live long and prosper. Keep up the great work. Sorry for the long comment but I have to mention the hard drive on the Amiga you showed, that I lusted after as a kid. I think it was 240Mb if memory serves. Here in Australia they got rid of the copper phone lines a few years ago with the rollout of our national broadband network. In some areas they do still use the copper lines themselves for broadband, either fibre to the node or fibre to the curb (more correctly kerb, not curb as in "restrain"). Because they had to cut the lines and connect them to broadband node, they no longer connect back to the exchange, so they can't be used for a POTS phone line. And in areas where they upgraded to HFC cable or fibre, they simply no longer offer POTS phone services, so you can't get one even though the copper lines are still there.
Actually, a few years ago I repurposed some old Cisco gear to build a dial-up simulator. It was basically my own personal dial-up ISP, but I was using digital modems so I could get the full 56Kbps speed rather than the 33.6Kbps maximum of a regular analogue modem. Unfortunately it was pretty useless since there were no longer any POTS phone lines to dial into it (or rather ISDN lines, since it was digital rather than POTS), but I could connect a 56K modem directly and get the full speed.

The VP of the non-profit saw the printer had a fax option, and wondered why we weren't using it? If any receipts were sent, they were received by email. No need to pay for a land line that requires a long distance plan to be useful.

When I started work in 2003 I had a fax machine on my desk, the Samsung SF-3100, it was an inkjet fax machine so you didn't need expensive thermal fax paper. I hardly sent any faxes using it, email was taking over from the fax, though we did have one supplier who we had to send orders to via fax. We had it set, so that people had to ring up before and say I want to send a fax, because you used to get spam faxes, if you left it on auto answer there was the possibility of arriving next morning to find all your paper and ink wasted on spam messages.

I'm very sorry to hear about the terrible comments you receive. Your content has always felt a bit more wholesome that most of what I see. I pray that the positive comments can outweigh the bad ones and keep you up to making more content.
I worked for the phone company for a long time, yes they are phasing out POTS service with gusto. The copper infrastructure is expensive to maintain and since the government no longer regulates the service, they can do with it what they wish. They are pushing fiber and abandoning the copper. I am actually surprised that they allowed you to order a POTS line, I've been told by former co-workers that they are flat out refusing the service in my area.
Faxing is an activity that holds some nostalgia for me as well. I used to send a lot of them in the early 2000s as I worked in a small contracting office and would send out bids monthly. I also understand the feeling of certainty that holding a paper copy of something brings.
    Keep up the good work!

My heart went out to you when you mentioned the nasty stuff you get in the comments on here. I love your channel & while I'm not as vociferously retro inclined as you I enjoy watching all your vids especially the shooting & production style. I never owned an actual fax machine but my trusty 28k modem served me well in the late 1990s - it was my answerphone and my route to getting paid for freelance DJ work (faxing invoices to an office!). Anyway Peri, Lady Fractic & family I wish you all the best. Don't let the haters get you down & keep the content coming ;)

I was taken aback to hear the toxic hurtful comments that you receive, it’s certainly not easy to let it go over your head every time.
Thank goodness for the other decent people who love your channel that respond in a positive way.
On the subject of faxes, around 1995/96 I had a compaq presario pentium 75 computer. I used fax software to send my girlfriend letters to her father’s fax machine in his office. It certainly beat the Mail as letters could take anywhere from 5 days to the more usual 2 weeks.
I believe the modem was a zippy 1200 baud unit that I had from a car boot sale. Back in the day when Netscape navigator came bundled with most PC magazines. I still use my Netscape email address to this day 😊

Never had to mess up with Faxmachines back in the day, but even with no interest in this technology from my side, you made a very interesting and compelling video about this topic. I like the walking araound and talking in nature footage. And coming from Germany myself: "Ja, Ja, das ist sehr gut! Prost!". Wish you all the best my friend!

My good friend Jim lives in Tulsa. He has still got his landline and two phones without electricity. He’s going to his grave with that line. It was incredible that his part of Tulsa was ravaged by a freak storm back in the summer of 2023 and his phone line was functioning straight through the resultant power outage. I’m sure he was thoroughly thankful to be an AT&T customer then.

As you said, here in Japan faxes are still pretty common. My mother-in-law used mainly faxes for her business until about three years ago. She said she preferred handwritten text. We still have one in the house, but most of her suppliers and customers have changed to email over the past couple years.

I used to work in the marine electronics industry and the local prawn fishing fleet LOVED their fax machines. This was back in the AMPS (analog) mobile phone days. It was well known that conversations on the analog phones could be intercepted (albeit illegally), so the fishing companies installed Motorola Cellular Connection boxes to their mobile phones. This simulated a good old fashioned 2-wire phone line into which a fax machine could be connected. While it was technically possible to decode a fax transmission as it was flying across the air... there was no evidence that anyone in the fishing fleet had the equipment to do this.

I recall having an OKIfax in New Zealand back in my first job way back in 1987. Faxes have still been in use by Chemists or pharmacys for prescriptions. I have a Canon multi function printer that can be used as a fax machine. But as I no longer have a landline. It's a feature that might never be used.

We never had a fax at home, but used it a bit on my first job. But I didn't like the rolled up paper, it was flimsy and hard to archive. A fax machine that printed on A4 paper was easier to use when you got quotations or work orders sent over.
A great episode and a fun walk down memory lane. Sadly we don't have copper any more out here were I live. It isn't supported any longer.

I recall having a fax machine at home in the 90s in the UK. Felt I really hacked the system by buying a box that would connect to the tel socket and the phone/fax machine to that. This was so I didn't have to have a seperate line. Call would come in, little box would determine if a voice call or fax and direct accordingly. It was suprisingly fast and if a voice call, person at the other end was completely unaware and not kept waiting. edit: I also remember Blue Peter showcasing fax machines in the 80s. They had 2 in the studio. 1 presenter drew a simple picture and sent it to the other machine...was totally blown away by it.

Wow, that was a pretty massive project for such a simple thing as a fax machine. Not sure which was more surprising, that you found the exact model of fax machine that you used to have, from Germany of all places, or that you managed to teach it how to print faxes in English so quickly. Either way, congratulations on both.
Seriously though, they're charging way too much for that phone line. But I guess they can charge whatever they want since apparently nobody else can provide one.
