i think what makes it so good (or at least part of the reason) is the context is that we the player have been listening to ambient tech like music for 2 entire games, so to get a song sung by humans (or what we hear as humans) is a breath of fresh air, the end of an era. we have escaped and now its time to live instead of survive
I will always wonder if GLaDOS didn't actually lie about deleting whatever remained of Caroline within her, trying to make sure Chell never came back by making her think not only was there nothing left at Apeture for her, but whatever bond she had with GLaDOS wouldn't keep her safe if she returned. This song had to come from somewhere, unless the idea is that it was "Caroline's" last act to convince GLaDOS to let Chell leave and this was something she created before hand, and told the turrets to preform for Chell as she left, her will in a way I suppose.
I didn't even played the game, but for some reason this just hits in the feels. I can feel this odd after-dream pain as if you've lost something or somebody you loved deeply some time ago, but cannot remember what or who. Just emptiness and sadness. Did you ever feel something like that?
Go play the game now. Grab any pc, slap the games on it, it should run, even if not well. Your feelings that you felt are oddly.. accurate. I highly recommend to stop spoilering yourself and just go experience. (If you cant.. well, wait, or watch as example the playthrough from "Boy meets Girl" where "Boy" made "Girl" play both titles, and the coop. But if you can play, play.)
It honestly felt like a part of me died when I was watching the ascent scene and realized that this was the end of the series. And the ending song didn't help either.
Cara bella, Cara Mia bella! Mia bambina, oh Ciel! Che ella stima Oh Cara Mia, addio! La mia bambina cara, Perché non passi Lontana? Si, Lontana da scïenza, Cara, Cara Mia bambina? Ah, Mia bella, Ah, mia Cara, Ah, mia cara, Ah, mia bambina! Ah, Cara, Cara mia.. Opera to english. Darling dear. My darling bueaty! My baby dear, oh heavens! That she holds her in esteem! That she holds her in esteem! Oh my darling, goodbye! My dear baby girl, Why do you not walk far away? Yes, far away from science. My dear, my dear baby girl? Ah, my bueaty! Ah, my dear! Ah, my dear! Ah, my baby girl! Oh dear, my dear...
I also read that apparently, Chell is Caroline's (and maybe Cave's) child. The text of the song even says "my child, my dearest" etc, which obviously refers to Chell. I haven't even thought about it all that way, but it does make sense. And it makes the story even more beautiful. In fact, I wanna play through the game again right now.
The song and art are both amazing. One of my favorites: 1:26 "These bridges are made from natural light that I pump in from the surface. If you rubbed your cheek on one, it would be like standing outside with the sun shining on your face. It would also set your hair on fire, so don't actually do it." I guess Chell wasn't listening to the last part. ;)
Oooohhh I got goosebumps. This is absolutely incredible. You are a god amongst men, truly. I keep seeing things like this and I'm reminded of why I got into music in the first place. Creating something like this is such a great feeling, as I'm sure you know. You are awesome, and don't ever, ever stop.
This song is so beautiful ... Every time I listen to it I break down and I can't stop crying It reminds me of my Italian grandfather who died when i was a kid
Everyone is Chell's dad. Johnson, Wheatley, even GLaDOS. I'm sorry, I'm being petty, VALVE made a comic that explains who Rattman was and why he picked Chell. You can find it by googling 'Portal comic' and clicking the first link. Though you can make up your own theories that go along with the comic as wel.
In the game GLaDOS says that those light panel walkways are made from natural sunlight would feel like standing in the sunlight if you put your face on it, and that it would also light your hair on fire.
"These bridges are made from natural light that I pump in from the surface. If you rubbed your cheek on one, it would be like standing outside with the sun shining on your face. It would also set your hair on fire, so don't actually do it."
It'll be really tedious to come up with something to continue on the story when the story is already finished. Also, it'll be weird making a Portal game from a different perspective since it'll just be the same concept... A Portal 3 will just be overdoing it personally and I'm happy to know that Valve is the type of company that makes games with brilliant and innovating ideas :)

I have to agree with you-what struck me most about Portal 1&2 was the story and above all else the memorable characters; I especially fell in love with GLaDOS and her twisted humour, but Wheatley was brilliant too. I stupidly spoiled Portal 2 for myself, so I knew about Wheatley's betraying you, Caroline being GLaDOS and I'd had enough hints to guess about the moon ending, but Wheatley turning evil was still a heartbreaking moment. Perhaps if they make a third game he'll make it back to earth...
he realizes that how evenly matched they are in the battle signifies that while everyone believes in him, no one worships him anymore. Namé tells him of the approaching attack. Realizing that his destruction is immanent (because everyone hates him), he laments his life, especially everything that has occurred since he became the only god, how he has spent the last millenniums watching the world go more and more to hell with every attempt to improve it or fix the results of his previous attempt.
The original and official Version of the Cara Mia Addio Soundtrack is 2:33 min long... this Video is 2:33 min long. This is no extended Version, it's the official original Soundtrack. Am i the only one who saw that? °-° But okay, i admit, good Video
+Zefren01 The soundtrack version is extended :) The turret opera scene in Portal 2 lasts between 1 and 1 1/2 minute, and that's probably why it's called the "official extended version" since it does run longer than the in game track
+Glen Sørensen Well okay... but there is an official Soundtrack, in the game they just made it shorter because of the storys' ending. Okay it's a extended version of the ingame soundtrack... but not of the official full Soundtrack
+Zefren01 this version was brought out later via the portal site. If I recall correctly they called it the extended version themselves. It's just a repeat of the final chorus but still. For quite some time all we had was the in game song, which was shorter. Hence why this version is always referred to as an extended version
The set of all sets contains itself. It is infinitely recursive but still logically consistent. Yelling this to a rogue AI will not save you from death.
the game producers/storyboard writers have also made statements along the lines of: while they won't reveal Chell's fate people shouldn't take everything so literally.
Absolutely love this song - can't stop listening to it. And what's amazing about it, is that is it is all more or less ad libbed as Ellen MacLain made up the lyrics as she sang it *.*
When he is finished, Namé feels sorry for him and even partially regrets what she has done. Yahweh concludes that his regrets how it has all been his fault and that he will die with everyone hating him, at which point Brigid appears and insists on standing by his side when attack begins, because she has a hand in everything that happened as well and feels obliged to not have him die alone when it was together they nearly destroyed the world; she still loves him.

That's one interpretation another is that she is indeed alive. Following the Greek Mythology theme, the wheat field being the symbol for heaven (which is in itself a symbol for utopia & liberation) was the perfect setting for Chell to be released. Many argue that people simply over think that scene and that Chell is indeed alive. Also that GLaDOS never truly deleted Caroline.
Fuck I cry everytime and I am being serious. Must be because as an italian I understand the language, and the tone gives me the feeling of a mother saying farewell to her daughter forever.
Sorry, when I first replied to your comment I hadn't realised you had written more; for a fanfiction Steel Pines sounds incredibly deep, mature and detailed, and the plot sounds fascinating (I'm not hating on fanfiction or Avatar, I like them both, I've just never seen a fanfiction with such a brilliant plot and such delicate issues before.)
I am actually writing a Portal fan fic now. But it's not just about Portal, though. I touch on Portal, Phantom, Invader Zim, Airbender, Making Fiends, Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas. Essentially, I think the best fan fictions come from the stories that aren't deep by themselves, but have a glimmer of third dimension, and that's what I base the series on. Writing fan fiction is about what the story means to you. The main story, however, is something completely original.
If you replay the game you should see for your self the many hints of "Chell's parents". I am guessing the king turret, but i know for a factthat GLaDOS is Chell's mom.
No, there are literally two hints that Caroline is Chell's mother. One is that in the ending song GLaDOS says that Caroline was a lot like Chell. Then the 'mia bambina' lines in this song. But there is no actually canon proof that confirms this assumption. If Chell was around 9 during bring your daughter to work day Caroline would have been past childbearing age and thus did not give birth to Chell. Che could have adopted her. But her Potat oBattery presentation talks about her fathers work. Which is more likely Doug Rattman, but that's a stretch as well. There are absolutely no confirmed facts about Chell's parentage. The ONLY things we are sure of is that GLaDOS is part Caroline, and that Chell was most likely present on BYDTWD and has a father that worked for Aperture.
Jasmine Mueller probably not Rattman, in the comic he acts in a way that makes it look like Chell is just a random test subject. The theory about Cave Johnson being her father cames from Chell's family name being recorded as "redacted" in the comic.

I think the fact GLaDOS performed an opera for Chell when she could have easily killed her right there at the end is a testament to the fact she didn't really delete Caroline. I think she knew she'd get corrupted by the power sooner or later, and wanted Chell to be away before that happened...
paranoia, self-doubt, and pain carried on that simple, five-word sentence: "I. AM NOT. I still actually get a little choked up every time that forty seconds on the lift rolls around. Yahweh never got me choked up. It is a really sweet song. It shows that the insanity she suffered didn't really diminish Caroline's/GLaDOS' love for Chell.
I will always wonder if GLaDOS didn't actually lie about deleting whatever remained of Caroline within her, trying to make sure Chell never came back by making her think not only was there nothing left at Apeture for her, but whatever bond she had with GLaDOS wouldn't keep her safe if she returned.
