Thought this was a really wonderful film. Low-key and intelligent character study with great moments of situational humor throughout. Excellent script and it would be a damn shame if Bruce Dern doesn't get a Best Actor nomination for this. He's perfect in this role.
Loved this movie. The mom works brilliantly as both the comedic relief and voice of reason, she steals the show especially with the graveyard scene where she reveals how many relatives wanted to get in her pants.
Gorgeous movie! My family (in my childhood -- waaaaaay back there) sat in front of the TV and made occasional remarks. I hadn't thought of it in a lifetime, but was reminded by the scene of the brothers. ALSO -- two of the funniest characters on screen are the cousins, almost reminiscent of cartoon baddies.
Woody is so convincing - it wasn't the dialogue that was important but the mannerisms which just seemed so natural. I loved the scene when they were watching ball game and the ending was satisfying. The wife was great and overall I liked it.
Of the four Payne films I've seen I have thoroughly enjoyed all of them - Election, The Descendants, About Schmidt and Sideways. This looks to continue that tradition, and despite being both a huge fan of both Will Ferrell and the Tolkien universe too, Nebraska is my most anticipated film this month. Can't wait to see it, hopefully next week :)
Director Alexander Payne delivers humour, style & A script that’s as well masterful as the film is which is A genuine masterpiece. (95%) (5/5 stars) (positive)
(Showing up late...) Bleak? Perhaps "stark". One of the differences between color and B&W is the way in which we view each. Color itself can be a distraction, or at least an "eye pull". That's less the case with B&W which lends itself more to light, form, and composition. A few years ago I shot some B&W panoramics of that cemetery in Elgin, NE and the fields nearby. I experienced it live and in color, but prefer the B&W. One of my favorite movies of all time.
I cannot wait to see this. It seems it takes forever for a real, genuine movie to come out. With all the Hollywood fluff thats out there, I am glad there is one movie with an interesting story.
This is one of those films I guess I just wasn't in the right mood for. You watch it, knowing it's a great film, yet you still are not enjoying it. It's a weird feeling! I have to give it another try... I'm a huge Payne fan (minus Downsizing) as it is, so I'm sure I should be enjoying this film more.
Yes, it is similar to 'The Straight Story'. Dern is such a natural, interesting actor that he can essentially do and say very little in this film and still remain fascinating. Good to see Stacy Keach as well. I didn't recognise him for a few seconds. Don't remember seeing Will Forte before, who was great as the long-suffering son.
The type of film Hollywood ignores now. A small film set in the real world of a small decaying town with real people. None of whom can fly or shoot lazerbeams out of their fingers. Marvel has ruined Hollywood with their fantasy nonsense comic book garbage movies.
Nebraska is a genuine masterpiece. It's tender, moving and funny at the same time.

A truly beautiful film. 👍
Love Mr. Dern in this film AND in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.

Kermode nails it - as he unfailingly does. I thought this film was enchanting too.
Worth seeing ! Hurry !
I really will have to get around to seeing this!
Bleak but an uplifting ending

Great film , no mention of The Straight Story though?

why doesnt mark talk about will forte at all? he is the more interesting thing than dern, because the last movie he did was macgruber?
Color photography should be used when the color of something is important. A field or face or old house or old car need not be shot in color.
On the one hand...
