Erika Fitzgerald jumped at the opportunity to teach in Alaska after graduate school. She didn't expect she'd be living and working in Whittier, a town where nearly all residents live in the same building, and the only way in and out is through a tunnel that closes each night.
Erika's story was first featured on this channel in 2013 and INDIE ALASKA decided to check back in with her to see what she's doing today and hear how that experience in Whittier changed her life. #whittier #onebuildingtown #alaska

I lived there from 78-82 and went to that same school! Actually it wasn’t built yet when I started Kindergarten, so we met in classrooms on the first floor of Begich Towers. My dad actually was part of the crew that built the school!
Why do people live there? How do they survive the winter?
@@olgabushak2942the same way everyone does? Heating 😂😂😂
I am in awe of how the people get along together. While in some places where people homes are 100 feet or more from their neighbors don’t get along. Neither is their a since of community. The word community is just a word for them.
Community always has a special definition here in Alaska :)
Must be hard to call in sick to your job if you live in this building!
Ha! Don't tell the employers!
🤣🤣🤣
LMFAO!
It’s a small town people are different in small towns. You need each other people help each other more. People borrow things from each other…I miss living in a small town.
Very true! Thank you for sharing your words with us. And thank you for watching! We hope you subscribed so you will be notified when new episodes post!

So glad that you found yourself in our video!
How much is rent? I'm considering moving to Whittier from Seattle and working from a computer
I want to travel to Whittier!
Greetings from Siberia. 👍
I have so many questions. It's so interesting.
That's awesome
It’s been 27 years since I lived in Alaska and I’m now in a wheelchair, we’re the building’s wheelchair accessible?
There are wheelchair ramps and an elevator! But accessibility can be hard on sidewalks sometimes during bad winter weather.
Sounds like my kind of place
I wonder where the residents do their grocery shopping? I know there is a very small store located in the towers but what about for other needs such as fresh produce and meat? Also where do all the residents park their vehicles?
We drive to Anchorage to get groceries about every other week. There's a parking lot in front of and behind the building.
Thank you. I would love to live there.@@thefaller03
Hi is there a place to live on Fitzgeral Island.. Thinking of moving there. Am Fitzgerald.
Why does the tunnel close? Why can't it stay open?
Too expensive to staff it 24/7/365
@@indiealaska Ahh, ok... Another question - why does it need to be staffed?😁
@@janewescombe426 To help manage traffic flow because the direction changes every thirty minutes and the tunnel closes at 10:30 pm. Then if there's a rock slide or some similar issue then the tunnel might be closed longer for safety concerns.
@@guymorris6596 Great, thenks for the info!
Yeah that's weird why build it for only one lane of traffic
Is it easy for ppl to get a job there? Does this pandemic have less influence on people living there?
Much of the work people do in Whittier is seasonal work around fishing and tourism
I don't want a job. I'm retired and I want to live there.
@@kimp1962 no one asked
@@furbees2662 your so rude
How’s the plumbing
I am from winter Alaska
Winter??
Sing song: "nothing could be s*** then to spend a day in Whittier in the morning"
what if theres another person moving there and theres no enough room in the building what do you guys do expand the building more?just asking thanks if you'd answer! :)
Exactly what I was wondering 🧐🤨
@@rebeccaeverhardt214 yeah
More people are moving out of that town than coming in
Most people would be moving there for a job because someone had left so their appt would be free - otherwise, just like any village or appt - you can’t move unless there’s a house for you to buy/rent
you could buy land and build your own cabin or whatever
Why does the tunnel close?
It’s shared with trains
Can people visit/stay
Who is Jessica Pippet?
Pre-Arcology!
I’m an Alaskan Native filmmaker - here’s your next subject 🤭

What's the rent like.
$1200 3 bedrooms.
I bet there isn't much crime there. That's what's up
I also have sooo many questions about the crime ESPECIALLY drugs... has to be drug free-right??? Anyone that’s lived here-let me know!!
@@janetteraspatello362 Weed is legal in AK but I'm sure it's consumed with a vape to mask the smell. About the only other thing you could do undetected would be pills or psychedelics. Crime would be pretty difficult to pull off
Fuq that
Wow. And in thought no black folk would be there. I was wrong
The entire town can get wiped out by a single incident.
You know what? ALL the negative BS comments you can think of were made on the original video. You don't need to rehash them now, all these years later.
@@karLcx Triggered much? You must have been slammed by others for living in that deathtrap.
@@lancecahill5486 thanks for proving my point and your attitude so succinctly.
@@karLcx And what is your point again? Just remember, whining doesn't count.
It's a serious concern this day and age one upset teenager that doesn't like their indoctrinated liberal parents and the whole town is dead
Very Caucasian by design, with Samoans providing manual labor.
Hi, 🌷🌹🏵🌷🌼🌻🦋🦋May I share the most important news you will ever hear? God the Father sent His holy Son Jesus Christ(Y'shua Ha' Mashiach) from heaven to earth, to be born of a virgin. He grew up and died on the cross for our sins. He was put into a tomb for 3 days, and then Abba Father raised Jesus to life and He appeared to people and went back to Heaven. We must all sincerely receive Jesus to be a true child of God. It says in John 1:12 "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." Will you genuinely believe on Christ Jesus and truly receive Him today, before it is too late?
