  • Planting a permaculture food forest in the mountains has been something we've been looking forward to, since we bought our land 3 years ago. But with 2-3 weeks between visits at times, we weren't able to start planting fruit trees until we knew we'd be close enough to go daily and water them in. Without a good supply of water in the first few weeks after planting, a newly planted food forest would just die... So now that we're living in the countryside close to our land, we can finally begin planting in dry lands!
    So here we are, FINALLY putting new roots into our land! And it feels great! We've been deciding which trees to plant in a food forest in Spain for quite a while now, and now we're finally getting stuck in to it!
    We also have to pause some work and act fast to stop an infestation of deadly bugs! 🐛🐛🐛
    Thank you for following our journey.
    ¡Un gran abrazo desde Smithsdale Farm!

    Like that idea with the pipe being the form for a gravel watering space. My suggest from my tree planting journey : dig the hole such that the tree’s soil level, IOW the plant pot soil level, is 1 or 2” below the surrounding soil. That way rain and watering can water stays around the new tree and doesn’t drain away. 😀 Eric

    Hi glad to see you again! Some trees take some time before they bear fruit, but once they do you going to love it! Nothing taste better than those you grew yourself.

      Thanks ☺️ Yes, we might need to wait a few years, but we cannot wait to taste fruit from our own trees! 🌳💚

    🎉Yep..planting fruiting trees are the best things to do.. enjoy it year round, first the blooms, than the young leaves, the setting of fruits, the coloring of the fruits..and best of all fruit harvest for human, animals and nature... Never too late to plant trees, best to plant more than one of the same especially if you have the space..just in case one fails and ofcourse it helps with the pollination for even more fruits

    Great video, neighborinos! You've reminded us to check for those horrible caterpillars on our land too. You can get traps for those trees where the nests were too high up, googling "trampa procesionaria" gave me some results. Also, a nice tip that tube + rocks so that the water reaches the tree better, I will definitely put one in on the fig tree we already planted (hope it survives until the next time we can go up there)!

      Definitely going to have a look at those traps! Thank you 🙏🏻💚
      And sending good vibes for a healthy fig tree 🤞🏻

    The smell of orange blossoms is awesome, but they also will be swarming with bees 😮. Love your channel ❤

      And at least bees will be good for pollinating all the other trees, plants and veggies! 🐝

    Great video, love the idea of the stones down the pipe to give a water channel. I’ve a couple of trees to plant this year in the uk I’m going to use the idea! I think you must have green fingers, roots already showing within a week! Looking forward to the next one❤

    Awesome project, getting this biodiversity in the area. Which in the end attracts birds to nest and thus gets rid of these pesky catapillars.
    You guys lived in barcelona while looking for real estate? Any tips to tackle the search?

    Because there might be grazers (goats, sheep etc) have you considered a stock wire fence around each new tree along with a strong stake to secure against wind?

    • @SmithsdaleFarm
      @SmithsdaleFarm  11 месяцев назад

      We were thinking about it, as we do have some boar around, but no other grazing animals. We’re put branches to stake them in for the moment and will see how they do 🤞🏻

    So glad you moved closer to the farm. Best decision ever👏 😊. Caterpillars are most unwelcome pest. Glad you are keeping on track of them. Is it possible to plant avocados in your area?

    • @SmithsdaleFarm
      @SmithsdaleFarm  11 месяцев назад

      Yes I think we can probably plant avocados. But might need a greenhouse or some shelter for them

      They are actually a type of moth, not a butterfly. Harmless once they are a moth, but very dangerous and invasive as a caterpillar. Yes, it’s a shame to have to deal with them like this. But we can’t risk them harming or potentially killing our dog or baby!!
