  • Struggling to decide what to upload this week and I stumbled across this one. It’s another do-over. The original version was the 20th video I uploaded on my channel and the very first non-Rush cover. I was looking at my uploads in chronological order and was a bit surprised (though not shocked) at what I saw. I uploaded my first video on January 24th, 2010 and uploaded my 20th on February 15th, 2010. I was uploading 2 videos a day, every 2 or 3 days. I only offer advice when I'm asked, but (since no one asked) one piece of advice I'd give to anyone who is just starting their channel or trying to grow it, would be this - Give your videos time to breath. Attention spans were short back then and I'm certain that they are even shorter now. No matter what you are doing or how good you are doing it, not many people are going to sit through video after video of the same thing. By "same thing" I mean - same person, same format... That being said, I'm just speaking for myself. My attention span is short and I tend to "move on" quickly. Not sure why I added this, but I think it was because I was reminiscing about the lengthy texts I used to write beneath each video, before I (much more recently) started speaking. For this video you get both! Lucky you.
"Sour Girl" by The Stone Temple Pilots off of their "№ 4" album which came out in 1999 and featured Robert DeLeo on bass.
I'm playing the Spector NS2A through a SansAmp YYZ pedal. The YYZ is not my favorite SansAmp, but it seems to work alright with the Spectors so I keep it around for that.

I first heard this song a year after it was released, upon arriving at my new life in Portland, Oregon. It was prominently featured on 102.9 KINK FM. That was the station, and this was one of the songs, that kept me going for that first year of 9 (at that time). I always thought that the bass was the absolute driver of the song, and I'm happy to see that my thought was right.

Great playing, the left hand is so practical! Great representation, Troy! The composition of this bass line is fantastic. Incredibly musical, but of course its R Deleo. The bass drives the airplane of this song with a locomotive engine, somewhat unassuming, until the 4th bar of the chorus immediately following the bridge. R Deleo plays this funky lead that, to me, says: I'm your train engineer, we have begun our descent, and will ride these smooth finger-style paint strokes into the cosmos! Might just be me, though.

I was watching this one and it's funny how I immediately noticed you play it slightly differently now... lol... that original video's Rickenbacker tone is ingrained in my memories because of the number of times I had to watch it to learn it!

My own personal feeling here...I'm a BIG FAN of your explanations and stories Troy whether they be typed, spoken or even conveyed in playing! My comments are always long and the two main reasons are (1) I'm inspired to contribute to the conversation and (2) I think if a person is going to put the time and effort into a video for me, then the least I can do is return the favor and give back what I can offer. I always feel as though I'm getting more than the giver, but I hope I have left a line or three that makes the person smile or laugh or remind them of something that can be used in a future video or project! You very much brought up a great point that immediately had me going back in my mind just how many Bands I was lucky enough to see WITH their original Line-up as opposed to the same Bands later down the road with members missing for one reason or another. Great share My Man and as always MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋

Also long posts are good for Troy's algorithm because it gets him thrown into the feeds of other people who make long posts lol,, I liked his other videos where he just do the tune and then sign off, but his recent addition of the after rap is what people who are learning the bass or who have already learned the bass and enjoy talking shop ABSOLUTELY LOVE... ☮️from Mini - Soda lol🙏

Sorry for the delayed response and thanks again for another "Stu-pendous" comment. As I've said, I struggle a bit with comments like these because they warrant much more than a simple "Thank you". The same reason you leave comments is the same reason I still reply to every comment. As far as bands and original lineups, we're going to see Kansas next Saturday and, at this point, they are down to 1 original member, but it really doesn't bother me. The current members treat the music with reverence and that's good enough for me. We saw The Crash Test Dummies last night and got to spend a little time with them back stage (got to meet Joan Osborne back there as well). We were talking with the theatre's director (it's a very old historical theatre in Tarrytown, NY... the Tarrytown Music Hall) and the topic of tribute bands came up. He said that, coming from a classical background, he never saw any issue with tribute bands (or bands without all their original members) because anytime you hear an orchestra playing a classical piece of music, it is essentially a "tribute act".

Nicely played man. Bass tone you have here is a little different than the one Rob DeLeo used but still sounds great. It might be an obvious comment but the YYZ still imparts that classic mid-range bark of Geddy! I wish I had seen STP with Scott Weiland.

Thank you. I've never altered my sound to suit the music I'm covering. I just don't have the skills to do it, so I find a tone I'm happy with and go with that. I think the "mid-range bark" comes more from this particular bass than it does the YYZ pedal.
