I would like to hear your thoughts on payola and songs that became hits because of Tik Tok (for example). We kind of talked about the payola part on the chat lol🤣‼️
@@JulianSteve ooh a vid on payola... very interesting. i got a book on that subject recently. i think i might make something on that by the end of the year
my opinion is basically the same for every social media platform; internet basically gave independent creators a voice which allows for you to be heard around the world compared to 30+ years ago when all the people that would hear of you without a label is when you set up a cd/tape stand on your local street. Of course, sadly like anywhere, companies will be there to snatch opportunities and put themselves on the algorithm. Good news is, it's easier to expose shady behavior now within a video record and upload button and maybe we can expect a better future for all artists.
@@elliotsangestevez I think TikTok’s impact on the industry idk…Elliot has been turning into Tiktokfication of actual composition and musical notes 🎶✉️📜 It has been turning music into hyper consumerist commodity for hyper capitalism per capita profitability- 😭😭💔
I'm not a musician but a visual artist, and I think all of your advice at the end applies to visual art as well. You don't need to have millions of fans and followers to sustain your work and do something meaningful. It's honestly something I've been circling around recently in my thoughts but needed to hear from someone else.
I really hope that artists, especially independent artists listen to your advice Elliot. The music industry is shady, especially when you’re small, and desperate to sign any label. Independent artists need to stand their ground, do research (this video is a good starter), and learn how to negotiate the best deal for them🤔💯
i’m so glad your “wife guys” video got recommended to me- clicked on this immediately after and wow this is so interesting!! i’ve been a working musician for 6 years and, completely unrelated lol, get my main income from tiktok. your analysis on the spaces merging and the history behind it is so thorough and extremely well-done!! thank you for making this and when i heard “marxist analysis” i immediately subscribed lol. excited to watch more!
Hi! I loved this video, I just wanted to make one small comment about what you said at the 45 minute mark or so-- TikTok may not be paying labels, yes... but it's also not paying all of the small artists that don't have labels (i.e. are self-publishing their music) and for whom virality may never happen. I say this because I *am* one of those artists, and every month I get a statement from my distributor that says one of my songs has however many TikTok views... but that I didn't make even a fraction of a cent off of those views. And sure, there's always the hope that one of my songs will go viral or will lead someone to listen to my music on another platform-- but if that doesn't happen, what's the benefit to the artist? What do I get from my music being used in others' content? Kate Bush got a flat fee for someone using her music in their content. Thanks to TikTok, I'm getting nothing for mine.
yeah this issue is 100% a concern for indie musicians not at all just large corporations. my skepticism is towards the large corporations because i take their pushback towards this payment as only caring about their own pockets and not about yours or those of artists like you. and this is an important distinction because whatever agreement tiktok may come to to change this will likely suit those labels far better than indie musicians as a result. but i thank you for presenting this because it's an important caveat.
Well researched video and has me thinking about things in more depth as always with your videos. I personally don’t think you’re far off on the conspiracy theory. Even if artists are doing it because they believe TiKTok is ruining their music and are genuine it still serves the label’s and their parent company’s interests in negotiation and ultimately the exploitation of the artist will continue with or without TikTok. I also appreciated your recommendations to artists trying to make it. It’s a good starting point.
The best thing I've done for myself in the last few years was decreasing my social media use. I stopped using Facebook, but moved to Reddit. I stopped using that. Sometimes I scroll memes in a moment when I have nothing else to do. I also have an Instagram that I post to every once in a while to let my friends know I'm not dead lol Of course I listen to RUclips all day, but it hits different. It doesn't make me angry or depressed the way Facebook and Reddit did.
I haven't been posting to instagram for several months, and my friends literally though i was dead. 😂 They texted me asking "are you okay there?" LMAO the world these days
really enjoyed this video and the details about the ethics of the industry, well done on the research and editing 💙💙 i'm waiting for the day when you overturn fantano
thank you for another amazing video, elliot. i learned new things once more and it made me think a little deeper about how i can support my artist friends. i can tell how much care and passion and hard work you put into ur content (and music!!!!). i truly wish you all the success in the!!! and ur hair is really cool too
Seeing how much Corporate is treating and affecting Video games and music just saddens me since it’s something I love and care about lot about. I really want to see more creative people and artistic who want to create what they want and not get stomped by forced scummy business tactics
This is the best and most in depth video that I've watched on this subject and I can't believe it doesn't have more views! Only 2 videos in to your channel so far and I'm already obsessed
Ok I'm going to like and comment on all videos, just in case it helps your visibility. But I really wanted to hear your deeper thoughts on music being air. I love music, and I see it as vibrations in my head. It's hard to explain for me though 😌
I have one sweater I would like to partially remake, and while looking for some videos about reknitting something I found your video. I thrifted it, and it's too long, so I was thinking of just taking it apart from the bottom until it's cropped and then re making the hem, do you think that would work? I can't really remake the whole sweater because I have no idea(yet) how to make the pattern, and my only attempt as making a sweater as a product of a fever and being to stubborn and looking at tutorials and patterns😅
I think it’s generating music for people who don’t know anything about music theory which is really messy but can leave us with both good and bad tiktok always wants to get to the bottom of the brainstem and its complex (just starting the video)
I don't think that's a bad thing, one of the things I love about music is that its so accessible to make and listen to now, not knowing music theory doesn't matter as long as you are creative enough, an example of this is rick Ruben (who is old as hell now) who is a producer who has produced a lot of well known records by kanye west, weezer, NIN, beastie Boys. He has no music theory knowledge or instrumental knowledge. You don't have to know music theory to make music, because music theory are just guidelines to what sounds good
this is the longest video i've watched that's not a tv show/movie/series and i'm so proud of myself 🥹 i really thought i'd end up pressing the x button after 15 minutes but the way elliot's discussion progressed was so interesting and thought provoking that i ended up watching it all the way.
what are your thoughts on tiktok's impact on music? and what should i talk about in a future vid?

you dont need an label. People have been brainwashed into believing you need a labe. Be independent like ytbers.
