I’m the mom that has saved everything that my now adult kids once touched. This week I cleared out my storage unit and realized I’ve spent thousands of dollars storing these items. Your content helped me to realize that while raising them I felt the most in control and more loved than I had ever felt in my entire life. I still have to unpack these and other emotions but thanks for pointing me in a different direction.

It's almost like a grieving process for the babies & children that they were, because as they grow up they no longer exist as who they once were when they were small. There is also something beautiful though in enjoying the process of watching them grow & evolve into who they are now becoming & knowing that who they were back then when tiny & small is still within them now, no matter how big they've become! 🤗💜

Both my husband and I received multiple boxes of things from our parents they saved. I kept a couple of things (my baby blanket, a stuffed cow) and my husband threw out 100% of his. My kids each have one box of things THEY have selected. I keep an additional box of scraps from special clothing that is turned into a quilt given to them as a gift when they graduate high school. When they move into their own home they take their box and can keep or dispose the things inside it, their choice. It's the best balance I have found where the kids feel secure in letting things go knowing I have a place for those "most precious" items.

@@huitrecouture because perhaps like myself, we think they might want it someday, we long to hear them say, “ oh wow Mom I can’t believe you kept this, I love this thing!” or “ I remember making this !” We’re delusional & our minds haven’t caught up with the fact our children aren’t children anymore AND THE BIGGEST REASON IS, we know at 35-40 years old we appreciate stuff we didn’t give two shits about when we were in our 20s. So we keep it.

I was a Cub Scout leader for several years a LONG time ago.
One day my husband's company was renovating their front office space and threw away HUNDREDS of trophies of all different sizes and colors from baseball/softball games that the office staff won in the 80's and had displayed in this HUGE wall length cabinet for decades. He called me to ask if I had an idea for them and I told him I wanted every one of them.
He climbed into the dumpster, dug them all out and it took three trips with his truck to get them all home.
I took them all apart, cleaned them, cut some of the taller ones down into smaller pieces and reconfigured them into a ton of trophies for field days, pinewood derby car races, leader appreciation awards, etc. It saved our Pack a boat load of money and made the recipients very happy and proud.
I even took 13 bases that were the exact same and made a huge trophy for my family to compete for during football season. Every year, the person with the best picks get the trophy to keep at home for the next year! We even keep pics of the winners from year to year! Very fun!
All the leftover pieces got donated to the local art guild to use in art days with the local comunity.
That is the story of one of my finer recycling efforts!
    You guys are great!

I'm recently married. I couldn't understand why my husband had almost 100 pairs of jeans. He told me that growing up in Mexico, they were extremely poor. Often going without food, he had to wear the same pair of school uniform pants for years. On the last day of school, they ripped apart to pieces. So now he can afford to buy what he wants. It's a scarcity issue. I have since shown him that if they don't actually fit, he doesn't need to keep them.

I could get rid of 90% of everything. My husband has a much harder time. I’m ready to move on to the next phase of my life and let my past life go. Many of the items we hold onto are reminders of our past. Some have a harder time letting go of their past life. Mine was painful so I’m ready to say goodbye.

Now know that filling your home up and storing is a little bit more than it appears.
It’s basically a loneliness deep inside a individual which we ignore and we keep buying and buying and storing in our homes or storage units. Or best of all the sad reasons we explain to people why we keep them.
I remember opening a baby box of my son and showing him all his first clothes because he’d just had a baby. His shock that I had stored them and loving way he said mom I’ve more than enough stuff for my baby, let’s find a family that would appreciate these. Yes it was ahh I’ve kept these for you, no mom you kept them for YOU.
So I found a good place for them with an amazing family and I’ve kept going and it’s the most liberating thing that I’ve done in such a long time. 🙏

One of my problems is that my 14 year old Granddaughter (she and my son and her sister (9) live with me) won't let me get rid of or change much of anything. Her Grandfather passed away right before Christmas 5 years ago and it's like she wants things to stay the same as when he was here. As my spouse put my entire life's belongings into a 10foot Uhaul in Texas for our move back to San Francisco, I remember telling him that if all this STUFF I'm spending thousands to ship went up in flames, I would be sad BUT mostly relived. He looked at me like I was crazy but than said he totally understood. Every other year I find myself moving state to state house to apartment and so on, I just don't really see the need for so much stuff but I've attached myself to all my "expensive" stuff that it seems foolish to not take the time to gift or sale what I no longer need in life. I also need to stop myself from buying things I feel I need just to fill up the current space I find myself in year after year. It's a crazy cycle😳

FOR AMY WITH THE KIDS CLINGING-TO-HER-INVENTORY ISSUE - I don't know (or didn't get, if it was stated) how old your kids are, but it could be as simple as they don't know WHY you are getting rid of this 'inventory' stuff. If it is only your stuff, they may be getting attached as they feel that once you get rid of this current inventory, that their stuff will be next. If they can make it so you quit the selling gambit before you run out of things to sell, problem solved. Make sure they understand THE WHY (as was stated in the broadcast), as even if the kids are very young, they can grasp the concept that you are selling items for a specific reason, and they may surprise you with offering up some of their own things to help. This is just what occurred to me upon hearing the issue. Blessings ~

You cannot change your partner. I don't know why people ask these questions.

when you say light clutter in multiple rooms, do you mean some junk items, or just that the room is untidy. I feel like most people, especially with kids can struggle to keep things perfectly tidy at all times. But the items can be things they use and love, they just need to be put away. I feel like this shouldn’t count as hoarding.

Lol those glass/metal awards ARE a heavy weapon worthy thing 🪨. It's what you throw at burglars. Keep them near the entrance hall for easy access. Nah, lol.

The kids want their spectrum of control. When they see mom treating their reality like an inventory machine they feel violated. Include them in the process. Show how their things which are their inventory too by the way😆add value to others. It’s all about the gift.🫶
