I've been waiting for some quality woodworking/runescape crossover content. Only need lvl 40 to cut down maple trees vs the lvl 60 crafting for black dragonhide. Love it!
Nice progress. I make knives and started to stabilize my own wood for about 8 years now. Most of my progress I made through trial and error and a bit through RUclips. The two most important steps that you mentioned too. 1. Dry the heck out of the wood. This will decrease the vacuum phase and increases the intake of resin. 2. Yes give time for the resin to be sucked into the wood. I support that with pressure. I have one of those airspray pots that I pressurise with air to a couple of bar. Also this increases the resin intake How do I know? I weigh all my woods, wet , dries and after the resing is cured. Unlike you I had never any success with dies in the resin. Also this was to expensive for me to experiment with. I die my wood with alcohol stain (those litte powder bags you disolve in denatured alcohol) The advantage in my eyes, cheap, a lot of colores available, alcohol penetrates better than resin. I either let it sit in the stain or use vacuum. Of course it needs to be fully dried before you put it into the resin, alcohol dries off quick too. Btw one litte tip, put a trap between your container and your vacuum pump. The oil in the pump doesn’t like resin. I had to take my pump apart twice, clean it and chnage the oil. Not difficult but messy and I like to spend my time more usefull.

When I use to make Billiard Cues. I never did it with resin. but I did vacuum seal wood with stain. So as I turned it on the lathe the color would be all the way through. No more spending weeks or months on a cue to have stain penetrate through and ruin the rings or joint collar. Curly Maple dyed blue or green sold the most.
Really fun projects here. Nice one lad. Word of warning about using click seal bags to keep moisture out - they don't do a very good job (learnt the hard way). I bought some weathertight Iris boxes with hotmelt seals and keep a tub of silica gel in there for stuff I need to keep moisture well away from. Works a treat. Just refresh the gel in the oven every month or two.
Hi Matt! I must ask several questions. What do you do with all that colorfull waste? With all that rasin, do you still consider this as a 'wood'working? 😅 How are your tools being worn off from this material - do you need to sharp your chisels more often? Thanks
When you were re-sawing the leopard wood (±8 min. in), the top guides were very high. Was that an oversight or for a reason. I'm a beginner, so please bear with me.
I am impressed that you are an accomplished woodsmith; but, still reach out to learn new things. I was concerned when you went radio silent right after building your shop. Glad you were busy!
Hello, I have the same vacuum pump, I used it to glue veneer in a vacuum bag. Can it really be left on for many hours? I ask because sometimes the bag doesn't seal well and I would like the pump to run all the time, but after an hour it was already quite warm.
AWESOME VIDEO! WOW!! This type of info unwraps a whole other layer of woodworking. Do you think this treatment would prevent a small board from twisting, cupping, bowing?
Amazing. Think of the perspective on vener. After just coming back from Milan I already got hundredes of ideas of how to improve fashion store fixtures. I was surprised how boring luxury stores i Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II looked. 👠👒👜👗 You literally stumpled across something fantastic.
I always thought those colored burl pieces look atrocious, I don't know why knife people like them so much. I understand stabilizing punky wood but the colors are aggressively tacky.
I'm a knifemaker, and I'm not a big fan of them personally, but they definitely sell! I think people that work with timbers have a deeper appreciation of the natural beauty in uncoloured woods. The average person sees a brightly coloured timber handle and just thinks "cool"... That said, there is always the occasional dyed block that catches my eye and makes me buy it anyway!
I absolutely love bare wood and all its natural variety, but having a brightly colored knife makes it much easier for me to grab when I've got a bunch of tools on the bench.
Not even past 2 minutes in and you are doing it wrong... pull vacuum until ALL bubbles stop you don't get diminishing returns you are pulling air from the core of the wood thats how you get complete penetration ... ignore the people saying to put it in a pressure pot give it the proper amount of soak time after releasing vacuum which is a minimum 2x the length of vacuum i.e. vac 20hrs soak for 40 hrs... there is a reason for this you are giving the cellulose time to get encapsulated by the resin on a microscopic level putting pressure to it is just forcing it into the air voids it only gives the illusion of full penetration... im creeping up on 31 years smithing and 10 years of stabilizing ive tried most of the methods out there and most of the resins cactus juice is still the best and all relevant info is on the turntex website
They really are worth the $$. I've had a red heart version for over a year and use it almost daily, it's held up better than anything else I use and it feels so perfect in my hand. Maybe ask Santa for one?
@@JSaltyfabricator yeah, but how exactly not much. Like, even a 100W pump is like doubling the lights in the workshop. But I'm more interested in what the oven does. Sure, it's far from full - say 2kW - power, but again, how much far...

Just received my purple Masur Birch marking knife … sublime work Mr Estlea. Very happy with the purchase.

Incredible work! You mentioned the maple was almost like cork, actual cork would be Interesting as well, 3 wine corks in a row make a knive handle 😅

Congratz with your lvl 99 Crafting ⚒ Go get your skillcape!
Excellent work, thanks for sharing.
Can we please get details for the air-fed visor you were wearing during the bowl turning 😁👍
with the scrap wood shavings pour resin in to it and use it for material for another project
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Knew i liked you for a reason... Runescape. Those were the days! I used to skived school just to play it hahaha

That wasn't just maple burl. That was some heavily spalted maple. I'm not even sure it was burl at its origin.
Yea I realised that after narrating the video. Didn’t even cross my mind lol 😅

Dude, amazing dive into resin stabilization!
9:24 is like looking at real life dragon skin, amazing timber, and the dyes only improved it! 😲
I didn't know dragons exist in "real life," chap. JJ

That’s just me being a nobhead. Always have the guides low
It still worked fine though. Thanks for the reply.

2023 YEAR OF THE COMEBACK
🎉 I’ve been waiting for this. Really is beautiful, and I fully understand the addiction. Keen to add this one day,,, Thanks for the breakdown
It's a slippery slope, mate. You may have to seek professional help as it could be too hard to quit by yourself.
So it’s more about color than stabilization? I’d imagine if color can be utilized; lack of can be as well?
I started stabilizing wood a few months ago. It's been fun, stressful, and expensive.
I am impressed that you are an accomplished woodsmith; but, still reach out to learn new things. I was concerned when you went radio silent right after building your shop. Glad you were busy!

Is this the marking knife that you gave to daisy tempest? Just saw it in her new video.
I wanted to see more about the process and equipment for wood stabilization.
There was a link at the end of the video for exactly that 👍
ruclips.net/video/hkqRlsuduY4/видео.htmlsi=W6VPRqRUTBtTeKKp
The Internet is expansive. Try Google or there may be a more comprehensive video on YT detailing W.S. Cheers mate.
No mention of cost of electricity for heating the wood in the oven for 5 days. I’d estimate 5 x 24 x £0.3 = £36!
That is very cool!
MAtt- Couldn't you use the vacuum to evacuate the water as well? Water - in a vacuum - should "boil off" at ambient temperature.
Dam u Matt now a have to convince my wife to let me spend fortune and start doing this. Unless u wanna send me some save me the grief. 🤣👍🏴
If you make stabilized blocks you can sell them to people that make vape mods. There’s a ton of people that make high end mods in 🇬🇧
That looks way too addictive for me to try! So glad to see you putting out content on your main channel again brother!
The double die didnt work very well.
Definitely looks better in person!
i prefer to just wait for 300 million years and let it turn into coal
i’m not a coal-ologist i’m a dumb interneter idk if that’s how coal works
Hi pal, how's the van build going?
I'm looking forward to the next video on it.
You look more like a knife maker week by week!
Very informative, thank you Matt 👏🙏
Nice! ❤
You should have used the coloured wood waste in an epoxy and turned the result.
Wow! Now that was a great video. Now to go to your site to see which marking knives are left!
actively playing osrs now, in my red zamorak blessed d hide lol.
WTF have you done with your hair matt?
Using that knife in a plastic cutting board seems so out of place 😂

Next do double and triple dye stabilizing...
you should take those shaving and make those into resin blanks
5:50 surprised this didn't get flagged
Level 4: Blue OSB?
I'm thinking tenon saw handle. Noone is doing this to saw handles.
Porus 😂
I think you mean porous (pronounced pour-us).
nicely nice chap .... if you still got your lathe turnings, filings or shavings at 10:23mins .... compress vacum forme them into .....
peace
Amazing Runescape shout-out! It was the first video game I worked on as an artist 20 years ago!
You got red on you.
Colored resin makes the wood too kitschy
RUNESCAPE!
I love it! I remember that dragonhide armor too!
Nice spalted maple 🙄
blue cheese bowl
I can't believe your chopping board is plastic instead of wood 😄
Well, if this ain't a rabbit hole I've nevet heard of. :'D Cool stuff tho!

Insta like for the osrs reference
This was really cool to see!

Where do you buy the ferrules and all other parts for the marking knives? I'd like to make a couple for myself but can't find the hardware anywhere
They’re custom designed and ordered. Unavailable to buy on their own currently.
Omg wow speechless
Kid in a sweet store! 😂 love the enthusiasm man

awesome - love to see your excitement!!
Beautiful!
Great work, but if that's level 3, what are you going to do to get your lvl 99???
Gotta be the wildy
Carpintería científica 😂
Is your dad Noel Edmunds?😂
Fun!
Very nice, good job there.
I love the pink but $113 USD is out of my price range 😞

I assume your 100 degree drying temp is in Celsius?
Yep, that’s Celsius 👍
Thanks for sharing.
That's impressive
Stunning work.
Wonder what is the energy bill of pump and oven working nonstop over days
Not much. Vacuum pumps are very small. Everything has a cost.

Hello Matt
Cool❤
FYI: Leapordwood and Lacewood are different woods. Lacewood is a brighter more gold color. What’s in the video is Leapordwood.
