  • As Gregory Bateson put it, "The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think." Presentation by Christopher Chase on July 8, 2021 for the 65th Annual Meeting of the International Society of the Systems Sciences (via Zoom, from Fukuoka, Japan) with English captions (best viewed in HD).
Based on my experiences creating visual media online, as well as teaching systems thinking to young people in the U.S. and Japan over the past 25 years, I talked about the role of art, imagination and systems science in helping people develop coherent understandings about the complex and interdependent nature of reality.
With examples ranging from Van Gogh's paintings, Indigenous cultures and Grateful Dead concerts to the ideas of Donella Meadows, Gregory Bateson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thich Nhat Hanh, David Bohm, Einstein & Da Vinci, this presentation looks at how the arts and sciences (combined together) provide a powerful tool for visually communicating the structures and dynamics of social, cultural, ecological and cosmic systems as they exist in our universe.
Unfortunately, modern mainstream cultures are rooted in rather compartmentalized and disconnected understandings about the world that surround us. Civilization's schools, the media and sciences have divided the universe into parts and teach knowledge that way to our children, thereby making systems thinking difficult. Many of our "wicked problems" (such as war, racism, environmental destruction, sexism, consumerism, social inequality, poverty, crime) appear to be rooted in mainstream ignorance about how EVERYTHING in reality is actually connected as unified wholes.

Oh man! This is a wonderful overview and guide for all of us teaching others in the world whether you are a teacher or parent or leader of an organization. We are one! Thank you Christopher Chase for your continuous work for understanding our world and how it works that we all can use with others. ❤🌎🙏

Thanks so much for watching and saying that Beverly. Yes, we have a real opportunity now to improve how children learn about the world, how they are taught the sciences and all subject matter. Curriculum integration is badly needed and it can be done.

Quite comprehensive without overwhelm. Thanks for tagging me. I'm likely to share this.

No comments yet? The title of this PowerPoint interested me and I was not disappointed.Something intelligent and well thought out. To me this is a recapitulation of the Renaissance Cosmos. What interests me is this kind string of Coincidences where two different things meet and connect again and again forming a sequence,a progression where there exists a grand design that cannot be accidental. What conclusions can we draw? Have I got this right anyone?

I've always felt the term Art is Subjective is false. Perhaps the word "Art" is subjective but not the Art itself.

Thanks for taking the time to watch and reflect on the ideas, Stephen. Yes, the Universe is one very mysterious grand tapestry, everything connected in meaningful ways, the Source unknown. Modern humans have compartmentalized knowledge, divided "reality" up into parts. The narratives of politics, education and the media keep us locked into fictional views of separation and competition, that hide the deep connections, relationships and beauty of everything. Combining the arts and sciences can help us to "see" the wholeness of Nature and the Universe that we belong to. This is where systems thinking begins.
Thanks to everyone who has taken time to watch the video. For those interested, you can find a replica of the Systems Thinking curriculum I have been teaching to Japanese University students here: creativesystemsthinking.wordpress.com/2021/02/19/creativity-imagination-systems-thinking/

Chandelier Cells are actually responsible for excess convergent thought including bad trips, which is why the theme of letting go exists in various fields. I would say more but youtube deleted my last comment.

I want to share because divergent thought is related to systems thinking.
