- An 81 year old Clement Attlee (Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1945-1951) is interviewed by Robin Day during the BBC's 1964 election coverage.
The interview took place in the few minutes after Alec Douglas-Home had resigned as Prime Minister but before Harold Wilson had been appointed.
Wilson had an overall majority in the House of Commons of just four.
I'm so glad you've put this on here, these words, from our greatest ever PM (in my view anyway!) are pure pure gold. Thank you!
Anyone who thinks Churchill was our greatest PM doesnt really know anything about Attlee or Churchill. Such an underrated politician
Alec Douglas Hume an old aristo with no idea of how ordinary people lived. Wonderful assessment by Atlee of Wilson
Three giants of British 20th century history, a great PM, a broadcasting legend in Richard Dimbleby, and a man who would go on to be a legend, Robin Day.
Sadly, both Dimbleby and Attlee were gone within three years of this election.
15 years after his heyday in power, every question answered without hesitation or politicking, just a simple straight answer. Harold Wilson was much the same in interviews, very brief and straight ahead. Now look at the politicians of today, if you asked them what they had for breakfast they'd tell you how great they were with the answer 😁
And if you replied with "I had scrambled eggs", the media would spend the next week complaining you hated cereal.
Good man
