Black Ops Cold War: A Final, Critical Review...

  • Black Ops Cold War… A game that from the beginning had its issues reported on, how Cold War was initially going to be a game created by Raven and Sledgehammer until Treyarch had to come in and take over the title. Black Ops Cold War was, fun fact, a game we learned about in some capacity even before Modern Warfare was officially revealed. How odd is that? Black Ops Cold War, 2 years out at the time, had information out there before the next title at the time in early 2019. That’s a first! Black Ops Cold War though was tasked with something tall: to follow in the footsteps of Modern Warfare’s monumental reception and success, and as a game that was built from reported turmoil, for what it was, it wasn’t bad. Was it my favorite game in the franchise? Not by any means, but there were positives, there were negatives and there was plenty in between.
Black Ops Cold War is now winding down as this upcoming week sees the launch of Call of Duty Vanguard, and while Treyarch are helping out with the zombies portion and the story that was started in Black Ops Cold War, today we’re going to take a look at and give a critical review and breakdown of Black Ops Cold War’s main year of support and the time that we’ve had with it since its launch and before. This critical review will look at (hopefully) everything on the spectrum of what was on offer this year and hopefully provide my accurate viewpoint of the past year. This is a final, critical review of Black Ops Cold War.

Hit the nail on the head. Im a very bias person when it comes to cod becuase I've been playing sense the 1st cod and i even say this one was a let down becuase of all the hype backing it at launch. The war zone event is what really gave it the big expectation

@@anthonydiorio3927 Yeah I'm bias for cod too, I started playing it with Cod 4. I feel like newer Cods can still be good like MW 2019, but Cold War just had too big shoes to fill with the legacy of the Black Ops Series and MW 2019's success. I actually think Vanguard will be a good game. It uses the IW Engine, Sledgehammer is listening and fixing issues with the game and it has the most launch content of any Cod in a decade. Plus people aren't expecting it to be great so there isn't as much pressure.

Being a child of the 70's and 80's I vividly remember the real Cold War and the era that the game is set in so I totally dug the atmosphere (The Pines WAS every mall I hung out in as a kid) but the game as whole felt to ... rushed. I know the difficulties the team had with the pandemic and all but it does show in the final product. I felt there was way too much quick sniping also. I didn't hate the game by any means but I'd give it a good 7/10

I think if Treyarch had a new engine but kept the same core gameplay, and we still had the Cold War setting, it would definitely have been the best CoD since BO2. A Black Ops game set in the Cold War, everything was set in the right place but it was just executed poorly and as you said rushed. I personally am not a fan of the MW engine, the guns feel great and it looks and sounds amazing but mechanics like bunny hopping, slide canceling and tac sprinting feel like they don’t belong. I won’t be surprised if people come out in the middle of the year complaining about how boring the movement feels. Treyarch should really look into a new engine

I just feel bad for treyarch, they haven’t been able to deliver a complete experience since BO3 because of activision. They had a whole second year of content planned for bo4 and couldn’t even finish the 1st because of having to make vanguard and because they had to rush vanguard and make more zombies content for other games they’ve not had time to complete their game. Treyarch is still an A star studio, sledgehammer will always be my fave tho, they are humble, honest and grounded. They genuinely feel like a studio made up of fans and developers

CW was a step back in alot of ways compared to MW, but the staple elements of COD that IW took out in MW (dead silence not being a perk, unsurpassed fire on the minimap, Ghost that requires movement to name a few) made CW 10× more playable than MW. Cold War as an entire package is one of my favorites, up there with MW3, BO2, BO3 and BO1. It has major flaws that I recognize and can critique them, but this game felt like I took a time machine back to 2012 and it made me happy (aside from SBMM we all know that's an issue that needs to be addressed to make the solo MP experience better)

I grew up during the tail end of the real Cold War in real life. The campaign did well, though it got the numbers wrong....a lot. For example, the hostages in Iran at the beginning of campaign. That being said, the environment, weapons, multi-national team were all spot on.
Multiplayer was ok. The Howard Hughes ship inspired level was probably my favorite map scoring wise, meanwhile what they did with Nuketown was nice.
They really gotta cut back on the bright character skins though. One of my favorite things about BO1 was the fact that characters designs changed based on what kit you were using, and you could use 20+ face paints. Aside from weapon skins, nothing was too bright or noticeable.
The seasonal story progression was a nice touch. Making "finisher" moves was a nice addition too, but they've got to really work on how a "finisher" can be interrupted and the trigger area where you can initiate it.
CW's battle royal modes like dirty bomb were ok, but they felt a little too much since in the end, Activision/Treyarch went all in on Warzone anyway.
I hope they keep with multinational team idea for whatever the new BO will be, since they are having it in Vanguard, and of course having it in MW2019.
Zombies was just fine with me, though I'm not too big on that game mode.
In all, solid 7/10 once the issues got worked out... but they really got to watch it with the amount of bright/very noticeable skins/outfits since the game is alot about tactics.
Oh, and bring back custom player card emblems/gun emblems. That was a cool feature with BO1 and BO2..... and give us OG players who went Max prestige on MW, MW2, MW3, BO1 & BO2 and so on something more than just a retro emblem or calling card next time. You guys give out weapon blue prints for just about anything these days, maybe a retro camo from a previous COD would be nice.

I honestly feel kinda bad for Treyarch and the Black Ops series. BO4 released when BR game modes started getting extremely popular amongst gamers - hence they had to be the “test developers” to see how the community would respond to a CoD BR - Blackout. With the only way to access the game permanently being by buying the game, it really paved the way forward and actually aided a lot more in the development of Warzone than we think. MW “screwed up” with the ranking system, so Treyarch had to try and find a way to bring back prestiging while keeping everything constant. I personally don’t have a problem with the prestige system, all though I miss the old system, I know a lot of people in the community is very upset about the system.
All in all Treyarch got dealt a bad hand for their past 2 games - despite them trying their utter best at doing better each season

It started off horrendously with the SBMM, but it did get quietly turned down a good amount later on around season 3 I think. That’s when I noticed the change. Also the score streaks being the way they were was a good change. It prevented score streaks spamming if you join mid game. That’s something BO4 heavily suffered from

Altho the campaign was fenomenal, it was kinda short aswell. The multiplayer had a general lack of fun due to sbmm (6v6 is really fun tho) and the performance issues didn't really make it any better. I get 120fps max in a public lobby with a gtx 1070 on full low. sucks. if they had just spent a few more months fixing performance issues and adding a bit extra experience to the campaign or just didn't rush the game it would honestly be a 10/10 for me. i really enjoyed and still do enjoy this call of duty.

+Map design in terms of visibility was pretty solid... atleast when lookin at mw2019 and bocw side by side same in comparison with the beta maps we had in vanguard.
+The different Zombie modes made for a fantastic experience and i appreciate that they tried something different with outbreak.
+Performance of the servers was quite decent even on higher pings.
+Crossplay worked out just fine and made for some interresting encounters to say the least.
+TTK wasnt too insanely fast but also didnt make the enemies feel like they were walking tanks either.
    +Audio mix was quite nice.
-The spots on the map where treyarch chose to place the objectives made every journey to a hardpoint a one way trip to the realm of hades.
-Weapon balance was pretty weak makin experimenting arround with anything outside the meta a rage inducing ordeal. This was extremely noticeable once SBMM kicked in as 99% of people would run the most busted weapons 24/7 (LC10s Tec9s or AK74us) which in turn made the games feel very repetetive.
-Scorestreak balance/prices werent thought about nearly enough by the devs makin some things very overpriced (like the choppergunner) while other things which were busted beyond belief (like the straferun) were way too powerful for their pricetag.
Overall a solid 80/100 points for me

I’d rather play this multiplayer than MW just because if that games flaws. It had terrible spawns that can easily be exploited, Camping was the only viable option to maintain a good KDR, and the maps were like a maze to navigate. I don’t know what’s worse, the copy and paste maps from games like BO4 and WWII or the mazes. The zombies was actually pretty great as well and had some unique innovations. The campaign also had a unique spin and is definitely a breath of fresh air and the story was decent too.

Depends what you’re looking for. Story; was decent and enjoyable, it had a few tweaks to how the traditional cod story plays with multiple endings and added game mechanics but overall had little replay value.
Multiplayer is good; far from the best but definitely solid with good gunplay, a variety of weapons and a wide selection of maps some good, some bad and even some added from old cod games. But unfortunately skill-based matchmaking really stopped this from being a top top tier multiplayer and as with any cod after a year and the most recent release the player base will be thinner but you shouldn’t really struggle to find matches at this stage.
Zombies; one of the best in recent memory, really brought back the classic feel of zombies not stupidly complex or goofy design just a good round based style with Easter egg storylines if you enjoy that. Launched with one good map and ended up with three more added through updates all of which were fun to play. Would probably recommend playing with friends though as it could get stale playing alone.
Overall in my opinion Cold War was a very good cod game, I’d rate it about 7.4/10 and would personally recommend getting it especially with 50% off.

cold war, genuinely had a lot of potential. the excuse that it was made in a pandemic doesn’t fly for me, cause many games released during 2020 that were highly liked by everyone. activision made a crucial mistake in having a deadline in november, this was evident by the horrific launch it had, so many issues with sbmm + little content at launch. would the game be more better if there a delay? honestly, it depends. cold war should’ve been this year’s game, and MW2019 should’ve harbored at least another year, that game was the peak for me personally.

I agree. Usually I am a Max prestige and Dark Matter camo guy and this year I checked out around Season 2 and just came back to get ready for Vanguard otherwise not a big fan of this year.

Sniping in this game ruined it. No flinch and the hit detection/hit boxes was so off. The cross hairs could be 3-4” from someone’s big toe and it counted as a kill. Hell…..if you were at least on the screen it counted as a kill. No skill quickscopers ruin this game.

I believe cold war would be truly loved by the community if it launched with more content and a looser sbmm system. The downgrade in graphics and feel didn't bother me at all.
