  • In this video, we take a gander at 12 mistakes you never noticed in the TV show M*A*S*H. So fasten your seatbelts and grab your favorite snack because this going to be a wild ride.
M*A*S*H was one of the most popular TV shows of all time. Fans flocked to their TV screens on a weekly basis to see what would become of their favorite characters in the 4077th mobile army surgical hospital. Hawkeye, Potter, Henry, Klinger, Radar, and Trapper all became household names. When the show finally came to an end, the final episode saw the highest viewership of any TV show finale in history. Many felt as if they were personally saying goodbye to beloved friends.
The show took a lighthearted look at a difficult period in US history during the Korean War. Not only did audiences find laughter and heartwarming moments throughout the shows running, but they also could spot quite a few production mistakes. Boy was there a bunch of mistakes, but they never detracted from the quality and substance of the show. In fact, you probably missed them.
We take a look at twelve of these mistakes and see how they rank. Most mistakes involve anachronisms in the timeline or simple continuity errors, but some are just downright baffling. It's almost as if they thought we wouldn't notice. But nothing escapes the scrupulous eye of FACTS VERSE.

Susan...the show reminds me of the time I spent in the service (Army) in Germany, and it doesn't compare to Korea, but we were in an isolated area (not many are stationed in Frankfurt!) and if you have no car you are literally stuck just as they were in Korea. I have nothing but warm regard for the show and the wonderful cast! It's so difficult to see the bloopers they are mentioning here, that they are really not worth mentioning.

The absolute biggest mistake you missed was when Potter first came to the 4077, they announced it as "Arriving, September 1952, Colonel Sherman Potter, regular Army, God help us all!" But then in a later episode where they go through the entire year of 1951 ending with the Giants winning the pennant, Potter is shown at the beginning of the episode dressed as Father Time wearing a sash that said 1950. This episode also has Winchester in it throughout the entire year of 1951 and he didn't even arrive to the 4077 until after Potter did.

Thing is he was devastated at what he had done - and cheating was definitely not something he would have done a happy song about. I don't know for sure - but I would guess the line was originally written for Hawkeye and Trapper but not used until later. Kind of like in Star Trek Generations when Chekov went to sick bay and started barking medical commands. Originally his part was written for McCoy.

Mistakes like these can be found in most TV shows. As I watched the video, I was reminded of another error regarding the Colonel's horse. On the episode where they found it, Radar addressed the horse as "boy" and referred to it as "he". For some reason, the writers suddenly decided the Colonel's horse was a mare. The only other explanation is that Radar made a mistake, but since he was supposed to be a farm boy from Iowa, I think that's highly unlikely!
P.S. I remember reading an interview with Alan Alda shortly before "MASH" went off the air. He acknowledged some of the medical errors from the earlier episodes - specifically, moving from one patient to another without changing gloves. By the time the show went off the air, he knew better. He said, "I would never do that now."

Also, Hawkeye was supposed to be an only child, yet in one episode he referenced a sister. In a very early episode he refrrenced serving in WWII and being called back for Korea, yet it is never mentioned again. I still watch the re-run 2 episodes back to back every night before turning off the set for the night. It is like a last kiss for the love of my life even though I lost her a year ago in August.

A couple you missed in the episode “5 O’Clock Charlie” Frank Burns refers to Gary Cooper portraying Billy Mitchell. “The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell” was not released until 1955 which was after the Korean War. There was another episode where they tried to get the “The Moon is Blue” which was not released until hostilities ended.

Fun fact about the 5 o'clock Charlie episode is the plane flown in it, is an American plane. Also, the pilot Charlie isn't even flying the plane. The real pilot can be seen in the front cockpit bent over trying to hide. The plane was given a quick paint job to cover the shiny metal exterior and American markings. The plane is still kept at the same airport that it was flown from for filming the show.

So other inaccuracies are when Radar was sick and Hot Lips was reading him a pen pal letter and the gal asked about two songs. The Wayward Wind by Gogi Grant and Diddy Wah Diddy by Bo Diddly. Both songs were from 1956. Way past the Korean War time. Another one was the wounded soldier telling the doctors about the broken fan belt on the chopper and the pilot had to land when it over heated and they got there 200 yards at a time. The only thing about the story is the Bell-47 helicopter had an air cooled engine. No fan. No fan belt. No over heating.

That’s right actually-Henry’s wife when she was in the hospital he told the operator “Mildred Blake” but she’s Lorraine later. Also, Trapper’s wife was Louise, and later Frank’s wife was too. And the continuity good with Henry’s kids was not reflected well in this video. When Henry was on the phone with his family (when he brought Nancy to the 4077 to visit), he tells Andrew “I understand your sister dropped an ice cube down your underwear-girls will do that. You mustn’t hit her with the dog.” Clearly Andrew wasn’t the baby. I thought Janie was the baby, from the baby talk he did over the phone (even if he was told he had a son). Ok, there were a lot of continuity errors. So did The Odd Couple and lots of shows. It’s rare to write a bible of who’s who, especially in the early years of a show.
