I just got to say, its nice being able to use the rear view cam when towing, makes for seeing how well the hook up is doing and how the trailer is acting, instead of relying on just the mirrors.
TheJ Man, Marketing tought you only the part of the equation. What matter is Ca times Cd. You cannot just enlarge the car proportionally and get the same air resistance at the same speed. S has the same Cd but lower Ca and thus more aerodynamic overall. This is a price you pay for a roomier car.
Hes saying its not very aerodynamic, the X is the most aerodynamic SUV available to my knowledge. I might not know the full details behind what all the values mean but its still impressive what they have done with air resistance.
I towed a car last year from Germany to Serbia with a friend. Some elevations changes in parts of Germany and Austria, but mostly flat. Consumption was, I think, less then 10% higher with the car on the trailer. We used friends Mercedes Sprinter, which is pretty tall, so I guess a car on the trailer was in slipstream most of the time.
Hi Bjørn, love all the videos including the extended ramblings. I was just thinking what about a curved or rounded fiberglass nosecone for the trailer (if local laws permit that type of thing). Also something really silly i guess but thanks for saying where the music you use comes from. Cheers.
Careful towing heavy in the winter especially with black ice on the road. Your regen will be your main concern hopefully it will not jackknife your Model -X.
Having measured all these influence factors for energy consumption and range, have you ever considered writing an app which considers all these factors? Would be extremely helpful for all Tesla users. You could type in - car model - wheels - weather conditions - number of persons - trailer with loads and the app tells you if you will reach your destination, given your current state of charge.
the fact that the weight does not add much in consumption, but rather drag is the main culprit, This can help explain why the Tesla Semi can achieve the great mileage. They focused on reducing drag. This makes sense, as in physics once an object is in motion it will stay in motion unless a force is applied to it. So it takes extra energy to accelerate a heavy mass, but once in motion there should not be much extra energy consumption. However change in elevation will require extra energy, But on the other hand if you have regen you should be able to recapture much of the energy from change in elevation. So the most important factor in EVs is the drag.
About the radar issue: You'd need a kind of a radar heater or front bumper heater, right? I mean, according to the amount of snow and ice freezing onto the front of the car, blocking the radar.
Wondering about the weights you have in the description...sites like wikipedia list the MOdel X as over 5000lbs curb weight which is higher that your list
So many charge stalls and slow charging there at 14:15. I wonder if Tesla will beef up these locations with Powerpacks, eventually. With the new 200 kWh Powerpacks, it should be possible to store 400 kWh in the area of a small bike shed.
The fairly low consumption is probably because you are towing a car which has a low drag coefficient compared to a trailer or a boat (even though the land rover isn't famous for low drag :p
I'm picky about who I follow. I just subscribed, but I've enjoyed many of your videos. I love your humor and that you are profiting off of Teslas electricity. Genius! I can't help but wonder, why don't you ever fully charge the battery? Just to add suspense? Or is there a legitimate reason to try to only carry the charge you need? Is it better for the battery? I feel like I would keep my battery full on long trips and run it until it's pretty much dead any other time to condition the battery? Am I wrong in my thinking, and why? Keep making bank and sharing your experiences! Beans & Shit... You fuckin kill me!
Derek Carson the range calculator in the car often tells you how much charge you need to get where you are going but if you are towing you have to be much more careful, you don't have a reserve charge, when you are out, you are out.
What's the range of the Tesla when consuming 400 Wh/km? How much kilometres did you drive, at which mean speed an how much time took it? Here's some physics about the energy consumption of a car: ruclips.net/video/S4W-P5aCWJs/видео.html
There is nothing free in this life on Earth. In the begining it was a one time fee option for some cars or included for higher trims. Now it is just included in the price of all S and X models.
Sernioum Deoiumnasderi well there are many places in Germany where you can charge for free, but mostly Schuko / Type2 which is very slow compared to supercharger :)
Ruben Kelevra, that would not be for long. the UK history shows that to overcome chicken and egg problem, there should be a lot of charging stations and as an incentive free for some time. unless you pay in some other way, these stations would soon turn into paid. like paying for parking and getting charging free, or charging at IKEA and visiting it and buying/eating something there.
have you tought about that tesla is reducing our CO2 footprint but on the other hand thez are installing charging station near burger places, and in that way they are Indirectly supporting CO2 level rise. you know.... beef meet byproduct is 23 times more powerfull greenhouse gas methane. :) what do you think about it Bjorn ?
What he means is that the cows are poluting the air more then cars are! ALOT more... they breath out methane gases that are really harmful. :) Watch Before the flood here in youtube, its a documentary that just came out that talk about all of this, only available a few days so better find it now! :)
True. It's often said that one of the easiest ways for people to significantly reduce their carbon footprint is to simply avoid eating beef and consuming cow products (leather). It's a lot cheaper and easier than getting solar panels + powerwall + electric vehicle. And less beef is probably healthier as well :) Meat production accounts for 20% of the United State's annual greenhouse gas emissions to give some sense of scale.
"that land rover never accelerated that fast before"... Nice
peter königsgruber haha
I just got to say, its nice being able to use the rear view cam when towing, makes for seeing how well the hook up is doing and how the trailer is acting, instead of relying on just the mirrors.
The X is actually very aerodynamic, 0.24 is an amazing cv value for an SUV
TheJ Man, Marketing tought you only the part of the equation. What matter is Ca times Cd. You cannot just enlarge the car proportionally and get the same air resistance at the same speed. S has the same Cd but lower Ca and thus more aerodynamic overall. This is a price you pay for a roomier car.
Most SUVs have the very similar frontal area. It only really matters when you compare to something like a car, and he's comparing to other SUVs
Hes saying its not very aerodynamic, the X is the most aerodynamic SUV available to my knowledge.
I might not know the full details behind what all the values mean but its still impressive what they have done with air resistance.
"its got beans and shit in there" I lol'd
You're towing a huge range-extender back there.
roidroid, if it is not broken, just swap the cars on the trailer.
It's a land rover. You pay a premium for it to be broken.

The only way an ICE vehicle should travel, being towed by an electric one ;-)
... to a recycling plant.
Theo Gregoire hehe
Thanks for sharing! I'm considering Model X for towing here in Oregon.
I have a suspicion that the Land Rover might make less drag if you towed it backwards
he's like mr. bean with all those sounds he make hahaha
Haha nice
Awesome videos, miss the regular road trips... 28:15 some of the units I think are wrong, probably should be wh/mi.

Ha! Did you know that the manager of Vehicle Dynamics and Concept Structures at Tesla also was involved on the design of the Freelander?
Its beans and shit in here... XD

If drive with your spoiler down you will get more mileage as the drag will be less. And it will automatically deploy when needed.
5:40 It spilled like poo juice??? :)
"Land rover is not the most aerodynamic one, so is the model x." Dude, Model X is THE most aerodynamic SUV money can buy today.
About the radar issue: You'd need a kind of a radar heater or front bumper heater, right? I mean, according to the amount of snow and ice freezing onto the front of the car, blocking the radar.
Much longer than it needed to be. Thankfully the windows viewer has 2x speed to speed through the driving...
Wow thanks for all the great analysis! Have you done a video of how you charge at home? Do you typically arrive home with a nearly empty battery?
Model X is very aerodynamic.
Why don't Tesla make a 5m supercharger extension cable, so towing Model X's can pull into the regular stalls forward?
OK, soooo, "Ching Poo" means "beans and shit." GOT IT!
Great video!
why do i never see any supercharging at the full 120kw on your vids?
What is the name/model of that trailer, please ?
The land rover is pretty light for an SUV even if it is a mid-size one. Are you sure about that?
Wondering about the weights you have in the description...sites like wikipedia list the MOdel X as over 5000lbs curb weight which is higher that your list
The 3500 lb is for the Land Rover, not the Model X.
Bjørn Nyland oh, of course, thanks
So many charge stalls and slow charging there at 14:15. I wonder if Tesla will beef up these locations with Powerpacks, eventually. With the new 200 kWh Powerpacks, it should be possible to store 400 kWh in the area of a small bike shed.
You should buy the Tesla semi!
There is a little zoo at Sundebru. It is worth a visit.
"Beans n shit" 😂😂
So how does regen feel with so much weight pushing you forward?
Fells more or less the same. If the downhill is steep, the brakes will kick in.
No Polse med bacon at StatOIL, Bjorn? Shieeeet!
WHat the name of that app you are using for calculating the range ??
:)
Impressive tow vehicle indeed
:)
10x for that weather app recomentation

12:45 you owned that landrover by this joke)
"beans n shit" lol
Are that wheels from Model S?
no meat would be better or what do you think tb
Is It just me It came a very big beeping sound or is It the video because It whas very enoying
Awesome.
What was the name of the first app?
Does your Tesla have Autopilot?
Du bryter vel egentlig veilovene her Bjørn. Maks hastighet med tilhenger er 80km/t ifølge reglene.

Charging to 100 % takes too long. And it will degrade the battery faster.
Derek Carson charging the battery to 100% every time is bad for the battery.
Derek Carson the range calculator in the car often tells you how much charge you need to get where you are going but if you are towing you have to be much more careful, you don't have a reserve charge, when you are out, you are out.
So you need an aerodynamic trailer...
Ching Poo Loong.... yeah, i wouldn't trust that food myself... :D
"But it's good stuff. It's got beans and shit in here." Not sure if that was part of the joke
Hey what's your name apps you use in this nice video?
TypicalCalc and Windyty
Hi thanks for the answer
maybe you should open the cans with food outside the car.
14:40, wouldn't it be faster to just move to a CHAdeMO station?

Are all the charging station free?
Nope, prepaid flatrate:

That guy on the back-up cam 12:06
this is track.
Oh what a fu... shiiit no Britney Speers now
Beans and shit. Oh yeah
2017 years supercharger not free :(
