Metal 3.0 originats from the game Sonic Rivals, while Shard comes from the Archie Comics. 3.0 was created by a descended of Eggamn who thinks that Eggamn has brought shame to the family name and wants to prove himself as the diffinitive Robotnic (which he fails to do, thanks to Metal outperforming Metal 3.0 in most aspects). Shard was a new form of the original Metal Sonic built by Sonic's uncle Chuck inorder to give Metal a chance at life, since he was self aware unlike Eggman's other creations, which happened after Metal sacrificed himself to save Sonic and Tails.
