Woolsworth was where my Momma walked for two miles, with her four little children, along with another baby in her arms, all of us bundled up. I cant imagine how tired she was getting us there.... just as a special treat, to let us get dollar gifts for each other for Christmas. During summer months, she would give us a special lunch treat, ordering three grilled cheese sandwiches, two chocolate milkshakes and a cup of coffee. Four children split 2 milkshakes in half, each child got half a sandwich and a handful of chips. Momma got a full sandwich and cup of coffee. We all felt so rich being able to do that AND get a box of eight crayolas and a coloring book each! This was our annual Summer BIG treat! I got my first BARBIE doll there! THANK YOU, for bringing those fond memories back to me during a snowy blizzard moment!
Beautiful memory of simpler times. Thank you
Same, my Mother & sister and me... Loved the grilled cheese sandwiches & chocolate shakes - 2 mile walk & i use to try to count my footsteps - now i'm learning Gematria😅👍👍🙌❤🙏
Awww, that's a sweet story. 🥰❤
I think we take things for granted, you just appreciate things so much more when you think back to times like that. Special memories…
Mary O’Hare You had a very Good Special Mama! I love that Story & kids back then appreciated the things we got & places we went more than the kids of today do or at least most of the kids today. I remember when I would go shopping with my Mom, I always got some Ice Cream or Candy as a treat sometimes an inexpensive toy or coloring book & colors. Makes Me long for those days & simpler times. I’ve loss my Parents & of course all my Grandparents so those memories like that are so precious now. 😔💙
This is the exact cheesecake my mother made as we were growing up. She is now 95 and lives with me and I will make this for her this week. She is going to love it! Thank you Miss Lori!
❤️
Let us know how it goes!!
She would love that. Thank you for making it. Miss Woolworth's.
My mom made this for us while we were growing up, but she added drained crushed pineapple to it. Pineapple Cheesecake.
I loved it and have made it
every summer as it always brings back loving memories of my mom!🥰
@@loripatterson7882 you have
I'm from Bakersfield California. We have the last Woolworth's in the country. It's in about 100 year old building and the burgers and milkshakes are still delicious! It's so charming and like stepping back in time. I took my boys a couple of months ago, and it was a good history lesson for them.
Anyone wanting to visit is very welcome here. Bakersfield is a farming and oil industry town and the people here are generally friendly. You might want to visit any time of year except summer because it gets very hot in the summer here. God bless!
I was 5 years old in 1963 and I loved going to Woolworths! It was a 30 minute drive from our little southeast Tennessee home. My Mama and Mamaw liked Woolworths too, and one day we piled up in my Mama's '55 Chevrolet and went to Woolworths. They were shopping close to the lunch counter (which I'd eaten at before) and suddenly heard the waitresses laughing. Then they looked around and noticed I was gone! They heard a waitress say, loudly, " This little girl says her name is Shelia Faith Parker and she's hungry!" I guess I thought that's how to order food. Anyway, I got something to eat, free, and a talking -to from Mama about wandering away.
I hate to say it but I live in the past. I miss the old furniture, lamps, vases, pictures and I love the collection of my grandma’s cookbooks/recipes. I really enjoy you and Mr Smiths channel. Thank you!
I'm right there with you :)
It was so nice to read your comment on loving the past. I am 67 yrs old and I to am finding myself loving vintage things.. I truly feel deep in my heart that I lived in the best of times. Take care my dear.
I’m afraid I’m a bit guilty of living in the past too. My mother passed away last September and this recipe, as well as Miss Lori’s memories of Woolworth’s, really touched my heart.
I'm 41 and feel the same. I feel I should've been born 40 years before my time.
Fond memories, yes. I had my mom only until I was 17. The counter at Woolworths was a special treat. The Woolworth's we shopped in had long balloons behind the counter. If you picked the correct balloon, you would find a ticket for a free banana split. What a thrill to find that ticket!
Hello, Miss Lori. Thank you for this video and for also bringing back a special memory of my mother working behind the Woolworths' lunch counter here in our hometown in Northern Maine. She worked there for many years until the store closed down in the late '70s. I can still remember her in her yellow and white uniform. We lost her 2 1/2 years ago, but my memories of her rushing behind that counter to wait on and cook the food people would order still makes me smile. Back then, there were no cooks. Whoever worked behind the lunch counter cooked and served all the food. My dad's basement still holds the mint green milkshake machine from that lunch counter when they closed.
What town?
Caribou
My Mom also worked in a Woolworth's outside of Philadelphia Pa. I still have the little golden bar pin with her name on it (Betty) which was pinned to the little hanky folded just right on the side of her uniform, Good old days, long gone. Glad we experienced those times.
It was a sad, sad day when Woolworths closed forever. The end of an era
This walk down memory lane brought tears to my eyes! I remember every Sunday walking to Woolworths with my Mom after diner, we would look in the windows at the displays for hours- especially at the holidays( back then stores were closed on Sundays) that store holds my most precious memories of my Mom❤️
Thanks for a trip down memory lane for this 81 year old!!!!!!
This bright tears to my eyes. This was my momma's signature dessert EVERY Thanksgiving. We all loved it. Since get passing 10 years ago I've taken over this dessert. Yes, I use a cold can of evaporated milk and whip it up in a cold bowl. Cold is key. She also chilled the jello till it became just ever so slightly set.
I'm loving reading everyones memories from Woolworths on this snowy day ❤️
My mom worked as a waitress at the Woolworth's counter in Richmond, CA. I have many memories of being in that store. Us kids did our Christmas shopping there and I remember hitting the candy counter sometimes. Very fond memories. I don't remember this cheesecake, but in one of the comments here, a viewer mentioned the hotdogs with the grilled buns. Boy, that brought back memories! I think I also had the grilled cheese sandwiches. I pretty much ate those whenever we "went out" to eat. This recipe seems to have a lot of nostalgia attached to it. That's so neat. Wish we still had this wonderful store.
Yes! I remember the grilled hot dog buns! I’d only get a hot dog, or the grilled cheese sandwich. Yum!
Oh my gosh I remember the smell of those hotdogs. Thanks for the reminder.
Hello Richmond! My store was in Alameda!
This was such a sweet time remembering going to the Woolworths cafeteria asnd 5 and dimes. I was young and vaguely remember but you jigged my memory. Those were precious days growing up with our growing families and spending time at grandmas. Gwtting to go to the shops and getting home deliveries of milk, eggs, butter, charles chips and ice cream cartons. Then the big soft serve ice cream trucks. Simple but good was priceless. So many good memories! Thank you for sharing. Makes me a little teary eyed. I felt you felt the same way! Simpler times might not have always been as simple but as a kid growing up i think we had a lot to appreciate and be thankful for!
I was always SO EXCITED when Daddy gave me a quarter to spend there (paper dolls)!!! Thank you for bringing back such precious memories God Bless🙏
PAPER DOLLS --- now that's a precious memory! THANK YOU! ❤❤❤
I LOVED PAPER DOLLS!! My Mom subscribed to a magazine called McCalls, and each monthly issue had a cardboard page that had a paper doll, Betsy McCall, that came with an outfit or two. Such simple times when a little girl would happily use her imagination to play with a doll made out of paper.
Wow I remember the paper dolls thanks for the memories.
I’m 88 years old, I wish I had a nickel for everyone of those I’ve made. It’s been years since I’ve made one and I’m not sure I still have the recipe. You are right, it’s a light not overly sweet desert, very refreshing. I didn’t use Carnation, I used Milnot, and yes after chilling it whips just fine. Hadn’t thought about this in forever but now I wish I had a piece. Thanks for the reminder. Peggy
My mother always used Milnot too. That's the recipe she had written down on an index card.
Awww, Bless your heart Burl.. You absolutely deserve a piece of this..
I'm making this right now and I will freeze a piece and mail it to you! I'm trying to figure out how to get your address without putting it on here... Let me know if you see my message so I can contact you.
What is Milnot
@@bonnieriecke5199
The best evaporated milk there is!
Only use this for pumpkin pie and taste the difference.
My grandmother’s recipe called for Milnot. I loved it when she would make this dessert!
I'm only 52 years old but remember going with my grandmother to Woolworths and getting a hot fudge sundae in Middletown, CT. I also remember her buying the wooden pallet with elastic and red ball toy for me. Sweet memories.
I remember eating there. They also had a chess pie that was delicious. My sister worked at one for a while after she graduated in '62. They also had nuts under a light thst kept them warm. They were so good. I always liked the cashews. I remember sitting at the counter also. Brings back a lot of memories
I loved the cheeseburger and fries and always finished with a piece of this cheesecake. I sure do miss the days of these stores being open.
I loved going to woolworth when I was a kid. One of my favorite things was ordering a milkshake and getting the tin cup it was mix in because it didn't all fit in the glass. You really got what you payed for. #Greatmemories
Thanks so much for the memories. Lunch & shopping at Woolworth's with my Momma. I'm 72 now & remember it like yesterday. Bless you Miss Lori.
This recipe brought so many people joy and happiness as they went down memory lane. The comments are so sweet … reflections of a simpler time.
Your goodness shines in all you do. Thank you. ❤❤❤
One of the ladies from church worked at the Woolworth’s. My sister and I would walk to town to buy linen dresser scarves to embroider. We loved seeing Miss Virginia there and getting our projects. Bought our first Big Chief notebook tablet for first and second grade and those Husky pencils! This was one of our favorite desserts for Sunday dinner, we always had company and I made the rolls or sweets. Such good memories. Yes, we made it evaporated milk, we would pour it in an aluminum ice tray (no insert)and put it in the freezer until some ice crystals formed, then it would whip. Remember those ice cube trays!
Still have & always use for this purpose to chill liquids for whipping
I remember my Mom would make Rennett Custard in our metal ice cube tray. Was so good! I still love anything smooth, creamy and fruity. I dont like chocolate..😋😀
My grandmother and I would go catch the city bus and go to town every Saturday and she would treat us to a grill cheese sandwich and chocolate milk shake… I was 7 yrs old then and now I’m 73 …those are the sweetest memories for me…
We loved Woolworths…
My mom also too the bus to town 20miles to shop and we would have lunch there. Never going to for get that lunch counter. Thanks for the memories
I’m just here for the DELICIOUS recipe, and to smile as I read all of these wonderful memories, that you all have shared. Thank you for the smiles that warm the heart!
My wife used royal chocolate pudding for her chocolate pies. My job was standing at the stove, stirring it until the plodding boiled. and the best was the icebox pudding she would layer it with the chocolate cookies and vanilla
pudding I ate most of the cookies before they got to the pan, but being wise, she had an extra box hidden out.
My mama use to make this cheesecake, and she always used carnation evaporated milk, and you’re correct, it has to be cold to mix, but it does mix up like heavy cream. I loved this growing up, and I have my moms hand written recipe… which means so much to me. Thank you for sharing and bringing back old memories❤️
My Mama worked at Woolworth in Chattanooga, TN in the late 1930's and early 1940's. Growing up, she made these cheesecakes for us and they were so good! She made it with all different flavors of Jello. Lemon was Mama's favorite, Daddy liked Orange and Strawberry was my favorite. Yum! I remember going to Woolworth in Indianapolis. We always had lunch while we were there! I loved looking at all the counters of all of the different kinds of items that the store carried. I remember the flat wooden counters, with dividers, just full of treasures. Woolworth and this Cheesecake are some of my fondest memories and also brings back wonderful memories of my Mama. Thank you for making this Miss Lori. Love you and Mr. Brown!
Kimi, my husband (born and raised in Chattanooga) wanted to know if you remember a place called George's downtown?
Hi! No, I don't, but Mama probably would have. I have been to Chattanooga when I was young, as we had relatives and Mama had friends there, but don't remember too many places. Was Georges something that your Husband's family owned?
No, he just used to go there to eat.
This is such a great video. Thank you sharing this vintage recipe and the memories of a wonderful yesteryear. ❤
Hi Miss Lori, I remember going in there to buy Christmas items. Wrapping paper and sitting and having a chocolate shake. I'm really glad you brought this back for me to remember the great times with my mother. Love you guys
What a sweet, sweet trip down memory lane!
It sure was...I haven't thought of this place in ages, but it definitely brought back fond memories of my Mom... and Daddy too.
My grandma would take me shopping at Woolworth for my school supplies too. 😀 We would go on the day they had turkey and dressing. I'd either get a chocolate shake or the brownie cake with ice cream. It was our special outing. That cafeteria was as fancy as a 5 star restaurant to us! I felt so grown up because she would let me look at the menu and decide what I wanted. 😋 Such fond memories.
My sweet mama and I shopped at Woolworth's in the 60's and I always wished we could eat at the lunch counter, but she was a single mom and we couldn't afford it. We loved shopping for bargains there, though! Thank you for bringing back good memories and I think I'll make that cheesecake and eat a piece for me and one in remembrance of my mama!
My mother didn't let us eat very many sweets but I fondly remember the grilled cheese with chips and a pickle on the side. We often got tomato soup with it. Yum! Yes, I remember Royal jello and pudding too. 😊 I enjoy watching your videos in spite of not being able to eat most of the recipes, not because of my mother but because of my cholesterol and blood pressure! 🙄❤️
Cracked the screen of my phone trying to get my spoon in there for a taste. (Kidding of course, but wishing it would work) 😍 looks AMAZING! Blessings♥️
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh my gosh! Do I ever remember Woolworth's. I'm 65 and my memory of the food counter was getting a glass of chocolate milk and a BLT. I made a blouse for my sister with fabric I purchased for 67 cents a yard! They had everything. I was heart broken when I heard they were closing. I wish God would grant us permission to relive those special times.Sadly, it's just a fond memory.
I made this cheesecake about 5 years ago. The best. My granny use to take us and order a piece of this. It was so huge that she cut it into fours. Memories!
I remember going into the Woolworth with my grandmother. She loved to shop there. I remember loving the food bar, and I would order a cherry soda, with a lump of ice cream in it. Brings a smile to my face.
Thanks so very much! My Granny would take my cousin and me up town in Gastonia, NC on Saturdays. We would ride the city bus, get dressed up, it was so exciting. She would get her thread and sewing items there, buttons, zippers, ribbon etc and McCall's patterns!! We would have lunch at the lunch counter too. I loved the tuna salad sandwiches and cherry cokes! What awesome memories, thank you! I wish the drug stores would still have lunch counters too, they were very good as well. Rexall is the one I remember
I can remember my grandma taking us downtown to Woolworth when we spent summers with her. My mom used to make this when we were growing up. It's the best. The town I grew up in had a Ben Franklin five and dime and it's still there going strong with the little deli and soda shop at the back. Life was so much sweeter in those days. We need a little of this to sweeten up the bitter pills this world is doling out now. I am teetering on the edge of sickness again and still can't taste anything but I'm going to make this tomorrow while we are enveloped in ice here. My memories won't fail where my tastebuds lack. Wishing everyone a blessed day.
*My mom used to make a lemon bisque. I remember I would always get excited when I saw that can of evaporated milk in the fridge because that meant something good was in the works. ❤
I pray you’ll taste this. If only in your heart and memories but hopefully in your mouth also.
@@apiecemaker1163 God bless you for that. ❤ I keep praying for these senses to return. It's hard to be the family cook when you can't taste-test.
@@Gigi-ty2jy I sincerely hope God grants you that. Taste is so important especially if you’re the one who cooks.
Hello Ms.Lori, the cheesecake from Woolworth was and still is my favorite. The one thing I can remember was also ordering a banana split hopefully picking the right balloon that had a penny for the price this little boy was so happy eating there my dad is retired from the Army and we lived in Columbus Georgia and would go to Columbus Square Mall and eat at both The Harvest House and Woolworth’s. It’s funny thinking back the lunch counter lady knew I would be getting a piece of cheesecake so she gave me a big slice. Great remembers. I miss those days. 😃😢
Oh my gosh. My mom and I used to go to Woolworth every Saturday after she got her hair done. I loved, loved, loved going there and eating. Their food was the best. Thats where my love for pattymelts was born. What a great memory.
I used to get all my craft things there. Plus gifts for different holidays.
Reminiscing about Woolworth’s brought back so many wonderful memories from the early ‘60’s. My little sister and I were allowed to take the bus downtown to shop for Christmas gifts, with the change we saved from cashing in pop bottles. Those were the days when young girls 12 and under were safe to go somewhere without an adult. Thank you Ms. Lori for this easy, delicious recipe and for the walk down memory lane.
Si beautiful times
Great memories. And you put the “s” in the word at the right place. Lol I love that southern slang miss Lori has … I get such a kick out of her deep accent. Like miss Paula dean and how she said oil. 💕💕💕
@@fadedglory1045 Yeah, it’s WOOLWORTH’S, not Woolsworth🙄

I used to love going to Woolworths. I actually cried when ours closed. Haven't thought about it in years, but the memories came flooding back...Thank you.
Woolworths is where my little grandma worked for over thirty years I remember sitting at that food counter while I was waiting for her to get done with work.. she worked in the curtain department.. she was so happy when customers had a special order so she could put her expertise in sewing to good use!! I just called her little because she was only 5'1 and I'm really short in stature but I stood a head taller than her.. her hugs were always so warm and special, I didn't appreciate her NEARLY enough!!.. those recipes of hers that have been passed down through the years are really something special. I believe that she actually HAD this cheesecake recipe! as well as several other recipes from that food counter, she's the one who introduced me to the patty melt! Oh I really loved them.
I remember looking at all the candy at their candy counter where it was sold by the pound. My only rolling pin that I've ever owned and still use after 56 years came from Woolworth's five and dime. And I remember the little blue bottles of Evening in Paris perfume that they sold. What memories! Thank you Miss Lori!
Yes my momma got Evening in Paris perfume too and I loved those wonderfully shaped blue bottles.
Yes! I've been trying to remember the name of that perfume for about a year now! What memories!!!
Oh, I forgot about the candy counter! I remember one in the J.C.Penny’s store too! My grandmother always bought us a bag of the kind we liked.
I remember Sears candy display & popcorn
Oh how magical was the Evening in Paris
This was truly a trip down memory lane, I remember all the Woolworths food and especially the milkshakes. I have made this cheesecake before and it is so good. Thanks for sharing.
Loved going to Woolworth! The counter was a monthly treat. I enjoyed playing with the tiny turtles and alligators. Such a good time!
I had just commented that my only memory was the alligators! I'm glad someone else remembers. I do remember the turtles now that you mentioned them. Thank you.
I remember Woolworth’s. I loved it! Thank you! 💜
I remember going to Woolworth as a child with my grandparents. We would get something to eat at the lunch counter. Us kids would by my mom serving dishes for Christmas from there. We just cleaned out her house and she still had some of them. So many great memories.
Yes, My aunt would take us downtown by bus and stop to get us ice cream sundaes there. My aunt just passed away January 21, 2021 at the age of 99. Sure do miss her!
Almost EVERY shopping trip included a stop at Woolworth when I was growing in up in Niles, MI. My mom told me that as a toddler I always wanted to "go sit" at the food counter. I don't remember what we usually ordered, but I loved watching the gals behind the counter making the orders for others and looking up at the big pictures of what they had to offer. I remember the floor was wooden in the store part and the unique sound that the old- fashioned cash register made as our purchases were rung up. Sometimes, one of those purchases was a little plastic purse with a little compact and fake lipstick!! Thank you for jogging my memory, Miss Lori !!
omigosh.....I remember those little purses with the pretend lipstick and compact. Wow, now I think I realize what people mean by "trippin".
@@darlingusa2pettee57 I don't know what happened to the first one I bought, but I remember buying a second one. LOL So glad I could help you remember the memory!!
OMGOODNESS you brought back such great memories of being with my mom and aunt at Woolworths. That store was the best! Loved sitting at the counter and eating and then shopping with my mom and aunt. Thank you for sharing and bring back such fond memories with the ones I love and miss everyday. Have a blessed day. 🙏❤💙
Ms. Lori oh gosh that cheesecake looks awesome! I could eat that whole thing! I love to watch you cook. You cook just like my Granny did and that's who I learned how to cook from. I miss my Granny, she was more like a mother than a grandmother, she instilled a lot of things in me. Keep those videos coming Ms. Lori. May your day be filled with love, kindness, and an abundance of blessings!
My grandmother worked at Woolworth in Baton Rouge in the late 50’s - 60’s. I loved going there to see her and always enjoyed the food counter. I don’t recall the cheesecake but will definitely be trying this recipe. Thank you for sharing
We still have the F.W. Woolworth Building in NYC at 225 Broadway in the financial district, just a few streets from the World Trade Center. The actual Woolworth store was across from the World Trade Center, which became Century 21 Department Store, which went out of business because of the pandemic last year.
The financial district was my old stomping ground after college. I still remember it all, I am a year older than you. 😉
@@aknitlife oh my gosh!!! I remember that building…it was beautiful! I worked across from the WTC in 1979-84 at Bankers Trust Plaza/Deutsche Bank. My husband worked 229 Broadway. Century 21 store was a favorite place to go. My grandfather worked at Woolworth’s in Boston until the The Great Depression.
I remember going to Woolworth's in Memphis with my mama. That's where I had my first ever club sandwich. My grandma loved their cheesecake and talked about it well into her 90s ❤
I completely forgot their club sandwich’s they were good 😊

You won’t believe what a blessing this recipe is!!!❤️❤️❤️My mother has made this, for as long as I can remember, every year at Christmas but it was one of those recipes that she knew by heart and had trouble conveying to me how to do it. Now I will be able to re-create this for my family. I had no idea it was from Woolworths!❤️
That is wonderful that you have it now!!♥️

I grew up in a small suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota and the Woolworth's was THE store for many things. It was the place my sister and I spent our allowance every week while mother got her groceries at the 'PigglyWiggly' next door. I remember the lunch counter very, very well and many of the items they served! It was a pleasure to see this and I will try this recipe for sure!!
I have recently found your channel and I love you two . I love the old ways ,antiques , vintage , sometimes the world makes us feel like a fish out of water. Thank you for doing what you do and God bless you and your family.
Thank you
I loved their grilled cheese and the tulip sundaes! Ours had helium balloons that they gave each kid. The waitress would pop them and sometimes you got a free soda or ice cream
I remember those balloons! What memories 😀❤️
1960s. Took my $1. earned money, walked miles to town and to the drugstore lunch counter for a toasted Chicken Salad Sandwich and a Cherry Coke. Then walked nearby for the $.25 🎬 movie house for a matinee double feature with cartoons and newsreel. I had enough left from my dollar to buy a drink and a big dill pickle at the concessions stand. A terrific memory you've brought back. Gotta try this Cheesecake recipe. Thanks!
I used to love going to Woolworth with my grandmother. Thank you for the memories!😁
My grandmother took us to Woolworth's lunch counter, K-Mart. I loved them such fond memories.
Yes! our Kmart here is north Texas had a little cafe that made sandwiches and hamburgers!
Oh yes Miss Lori, I adored their food counter when I was a very young child. Favorites: the hot dogs in the square shaped rolls, orange soda and French fries! Simple food, always fresh. We loved the shopping. Variety galore, good prices. Remember EVENING IN PARIS PERFUME in the cobalt blue bottles!?. TFS and bringing back such memories.
OMG! The beautiful cobalt blue bottle of EVENING IN PARIS perfume! What a precious memory! ❤ My Mother always bought a bottle for each of her three little girls and I can still remember our bedrooms smelling of it! ❤ ❤ ❤
Wow! Evening in Paris...now there's a real blast from the past! 😲😍
My Mom wore Midnight In Paris when I was young. That was one of her "everyday perfumes". For special occasions she wore Fleur De Roche (sp). Haven't thought of that in years. Can almost smell it. Thanks for the memory.
Totally remember evening in Paris in the colbalt blue bottle! Wow! I'm getting up there in years!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I still have a bottle of Evening In Paris bottle that I received as a birthday gift when I was 9- yrs old. It was a gift set, lost the smaller thjn bottle.
My Lord, that looks yummy! I remember Woolworths, my grandmother worked at the Woolworths lunch counter in downtown Providence RI for many years. We would take the bus to see her, and she would make us lunch. Such a wonderful memory, thank you for this look down memory lane 🤗
Yes! My Grandma use to take me downtown on the streetcar and we would go to Woolworths, sit on the spinning stools and have cheesecake, and lunch. Great Memories, thank you for the recipe❤️🥰😉
The grilled hotdogs and the chocolate shakes made to order! ❤🌹❤ Woolworths was always the best store! Thanks for the memories! Sewing, crochet and school supplies were always from them!
Thank you for this recipe. I remember going to our Woolworths. For some reason I liked the red cubed jello served in a tall dessert glass with dabs of whipped cream between layers of this jello. Such an easy thing to make but for me as a little girl, I thought it was so fancy. I also remember the patty melts and cherry pie. Great memories of buying simple gifts for my parents at Christmas time. 🙏🐕🇺🇸
Going to Woolworth's (also Kresge's) with my mom and having lunch at their counter is one of my fond memories. That simple, delicious food was the best! I don't think people today would be satisfied with that, they'd have to have something weird and exotic. My mother worked at Woolworth's for a short time when I was very young. Thank you for this nostalgic video!
It was called Kress's when I was little...
This was so enjoyable to watch. I was a Woolworths kid & my mom would get me a vanilla milkshake & usually a hot dog (what a combo!) 😊 I don’t recall cheesecake but that sure does look quite yummy. Enjoyable video.
When I'd go with my mom or grandma they'd order a cup of chili with a hot dog or soup and grilled cheese, I'd get the hot dog or grilled cheese. Sometimes Grandma would get a patty melt and I'd get half, they were so delicious. Grandma always got a Pepsi with a squirt of cherry syrup, OMG they were so good. The strawberry one was good too. My mom always bought Royal because it was cheaper.
I personally have never had luck whipping evaporated milk.
Anyone remember those huge sundaes that where 1/2 a yard high? We went shopping every Wednesday with mom & grandma and we always had lunch there. We always had a toast sandwich that had ham, turkey, cheese, tomato & lettus. It came with a fancy toothpick with a green olive. It was a fantastic experience to look at all the thing in there. It is missed! Golden memories with mom & grandma!🤗
I think My Woolworth’s called that “club sandwich”, on the menu, loved that as a little girl, because, I always thought it was an
“adults only fancy sandwich”, (that the rich folks ate at a country club)!😂🤣🥰
How does one cook with ALL THESE TEARS RUNNING DOWN ONE'S FACE? 😢🤗🙏 THANK YOU FOR THIS RECIPE AND ALL THE MEMORIES OF MY MAWGRAW IN WEIRTON, WVa I liked and saved this and am making it tomorrow for my family for the first time! I was born in 76 but we still had all the classic stores in my town and the ones around us. I am so grateful for my family and my young years especially
Thanks for the memories! I would get a dime, hop on the bus and go downtown. Woolworths was my jam! Loved sitting at the counter for lunch. I was about 10 yrs old. ❤️
You brought back so many memories of me sitting at the counter eating cheesecake. By far, they had the best cheesecake I had ever tasted. I was sad when they went out of business. Thanks for sharing.
I’m still sad they’re out of business!
I remember getting the grilled cheese at the counter. Getting our Easter baskets and boxed Halloween costumes there…great memories
I remember this cheesecake! Thanks for showing us how to make it. When I was a teenager in the 1960s, I bought a lot of 45 records there. When records had just faded out of popularity, they would sell them 3 for a $1. The sale records had a hole punched through the paper label on the record near the center. I still have lots of these.
My MeMaw made this cheesecake all the time for special dinners! Oh, the memories it brings back.
We had a Woolworth in downtown Hammond IN. I loved going to the basement of the store and see the little fish. The food counter was down there. Sometimes mama would have enough $ for lunch. The best mashed potatoes and gravy. Of course cheese cake💕 love y’all
That's the one I went to! I lived in Cal City and East Chicago, IN
In the late 60's I was living with my aunt and uncle in Covina, CA to babysit while they both worked. Every day at lunch I would take my little cousin and myself and walk about 3 blocks to the 5 and Dime. Always got 2 grilled cheeses and a cherry coke. We'd usually look around and get some little something for him before walking back home. So many good memories!
We love you too!! Thank you for this recipe! I remember Woolworth's, but I don't recall any foods there. But with my parents having 6 kids, we rarely ate out. We enjoyed the home cooking of our family. We all cooked and baked pretty well 😋
O my goodness loved that place. Remember going downtown shopping with my mom as a child. Always had lunch there! Best memories!
When I am pressed for time I make this cheese cake for the Christmas parties it’s a good little recipe Woolworth ‘s is where my mom got my Easter dresses for church
I’m 63- will be 64 years old this year, and I have many memories from my British mum and my Kentucky grandmother! I can sit and listen to you and Mr. Brown all day! Thank you for the memories Mrs Lori. God Bless you both.
ahhhh the memories... you just gave us Ms Lori are priceless Thank you!
Yes, I loved going to Woolworth's with my mom. I wish someone would revamp that idea and have those counters again. Yes, I used to get the grilled cheese sandwich!! Beautiful memories. Thanks for this recipe.
I remember after school we would go into Woolswoth and order a cherry coke
It’s fun to have someone have the same warm memories.
Oh my! This brought back soooo many memories. I don't remember if we had a FW Woolworths, but I think we did...but when I got old enough to remember the name it had become McCrory's Five and Dime and they had a lunch counter and I remember going with my mother and sitting at the counter and having a sandwich, a milkshake, or a piece of pie or slice of cake. Made me miss my mom soooo much....but such a sweet memory. My mom would be 101 this June if she was still living. I'm going to try this! Thank you for sharing it!
We had Woolworth's on one side of the street, McCrory's on the other.
I remember Woolworths! Me and my mother shopped there often, many years ago, this brings back happy memories!wish we still had Woolworths like in the good old days!!🤗
I used to walk to Woolworth's on 4th in Louisville in 1990. It was a quaint blast from the past even back then. What a great time❤
My Grandmother always made this at Christmas time and I still have the original newspaper recipe she gave me years ago.
I remember the grilled cheese and the ham salad sandwiches too I got one of my first coca cola s at wool worth.thank you for reminding me of that special time we lived in Pittsburgh then I love ❤️ you and your husband. God bless you and your husband Jesus bless you and your husband.
Hey Miss Lori, this was such a great video! My first official job was at Woolworth’s as a waitress when I was 16. I worked the counter and it was so much fun. I am 62 now so this video really brought me down memory lane! The patty melts and malts were delish! I made the cake today with the recipe on that old newspaper clip you posted. I used the evaporated milk after chilling it for 24 hours. I was so surprised how much it did peak after whipping it according to directions. It’s been in the fridge all day and has not set up like a cheesecake. The batter was delicious though. I had extra batter and put it in a parfait dish and had that for dessert tonight but it did not set up much. It was the consistency of pudding. Hopefully tomorrow the cake in my oblong pan will be harder and set up like a cheesecake. If not I have a whole lot of lemon pudding on my hands! Blessings galore to you and Mr. Brown!
Yes yes yes! Oh my! I remember the patty melts and as time went on, the people changed the patty melt, so when I ordered one hoping for the real patty melt, it was not a patty melt and I had to tell them to take it back. And said I ordered a patty melt. Lol
I searched n searched for a real patty melt n never found one.
It’s like McDonals fried cherry pies, can’t find one that was like that fried cherry pie.
So sad that things changed.
And the foods now are so toxic!
I remember the Ben Franklin five n dime stores.
I still have a bouquet of flowers with a Ben Franklins tag still on it.
I remember getting a tiny little pretty bottle of perfume my mom n grandma let me buy that smelled so so good at the Ben Franklins.
I was sad when all the familiar stores closed.
I can’t wait to try this!! Looks so yummy! I remember Woolworth here in Kansas City. I miss it! We didn’t get to eat there much, but I remember a cheesecake that looked like that, so maybe I ate it there. One time I was with my sister and dad, and my sister and I got a little transistor radio. Oh the good times! Thank you for this sentimental journey. ❤️
Mom used to take us to Woolworths for lunch ....always got the bowl of fries ....so good 😊❤️
My mother worked at the Woolworth counter in North Bay Ontario Canada when I was a child. I remember the grilled cheese more than anything. I'm currently 70 years old and farming in Washington state. Thank you so much for this memory. God bless you. 😊🙏
Ms Lori, I do appreciate your good old days of FW Woolworths recipe for their cheesecake, it brings back such beautiful memories, Thank you.
Our old Woolworth is now a Art & Crafts gallery in Downtown Asheville! They still have the the food bar open! Most of it is original! Not only the cheesecake, malts and grilled cheese they had the hot nut counter in ours! Oh my to smell those hot nuts! I still have Woolworth Christmas Ornaments! Great memories!!
Would much rather have old Woolworth open with ALL its goodness rather than ARTS AND CRAFTS😁👍🏻‼️‼️‼️‼️seriously 🙋🏼♀️wish downtown would have stayed what it WAS … the good ole days… Ivey’s… Pearlman’s, Diana Shop, etc etc… 😁
I live in Woodfin,NC, which is between Asheville and Weaverville, and I too wish Asheville was like it used to be. My mom worked at JC Penny’s and I had an Aunt who worked at Eckerd Drug Store on the lunch counter. Used to like going downtown but very rarely go near it now.
We hardly ever go to Downtown Asheville anymore either! Times have sure really changed! So sad!
Well my memory is of the hot nut counter in the big Sears in Memphis. My mother and aunt would take us there shopping for Easter and Christmas. I am 72 and will never forget that smell.

Last time my sweet mother and I went WINDOW SHOPPING downtown Asheville was many many years ago … I can’t remember if it was night or late evening…and some man or men in a car going by said something to us and we never went back to window shop after hours again… I hate it that you can’t feel safe just doing “good ole days” things anymore…🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
Here in downtown Spartanburg,
SC, we have the shell still standing of the old Woolworths.
It always gives me that nostalgic feeling of times gone by.
Thankyou Ms.Lori for bringing a bit of that nostalgia home to roost! XOXO 😘 😘
Hey! I live in Spartanburg and hasn’t it changed so much. I loved the loose fresh candy.
@@lanehembree3020 Hey y'all, I was born in Spartanburg! Live in Inman, SC now. Sure do remember all of our 5&10 stores. We had Kress, Silver's, McClellans and Woolworths at one time.
@Diane Scoggins, yes the Burg sure has changed.Do you remember Aug W.Smith well my Nephews wife has a hair salon on the main floor..I miss the way we used to go to town and shop for nice clothes….
Oh this brings back so many memories! We lived in a small Michigan town and to shop and have a treat at Woolworth's was the big time !! I'd save my pennies, and buy a trinket or two
My brother and I spent the summer's with our grandparents. She would take us to Woolworth to get me a puzzle & my brother a model to put together. I loved the smell of the store & the feel & creaking of the wood floors. We also got chocolate malts sometimes. Some of my best memories as a child.
I worked at a restaurant and made the cheesecake. The recipe was very similar, except we used chilled Milnot. Also my favorite good at Woolworths was their hotdogs. The bun tasted like homemade bread. Thank you for the memories ❤️
