You forgot to mention something incredibly important about this show. June cannot leave Orchid Bay at all. It's part of her duties of being the Te Xuan Ze. She tried chasing a creature out of Orchid Bay, but a barrier stopped her. Her grandmother then explained this to her, which broke her heart because she wanted to go to space camp. This adds a whole new layer compared to shows like Jake Long and Danny Phantom. Danny and Jake can leave Amity Park and New York whenever they want, June can't until she get's married, has kids, and one of those kids becomes the next Te Xuan Ze. Her grandmother is actually traveling the world to find a way for June to leave Orchid Bay.
It adds a whole new dynamic, which from what I've remember was not expanded upon in the show. It makes you feel sorry for June and makes you realize that being the Te Xuan Ze is more of a curse then a blessing. Since what good is stopping evil if said evil is on the other side of the barrier you can't cross.
Also it raised the question why don't the parents know about this, if say the father got a new job and they had to move out of Orchid Bay.

You know what would be cool? If they made season 4? It would have focused on June finally leaving her hometown due to an ancient evil planning to rule the world was sealed in said town for hundreds of years. Finally leaves said town and she has to ask the guardian who created the Te Xuan Ze to help her leave her town to stop said evil. It's fucking nuts the creator hasn't done anything about it.

I think one of the best episodes was where Juniper discovers she can never leave her hometown because there's a magical barrier that prevents any "currently active chosen one" to leave in order to make sure they stay and protect the gateway into the magical dimension, and having to come to terms that she'll never be able to fulfill her dream of becoming an astronaut and that she'll have to grow old, get married and HOPE that one of her kids takes her place.

Both shows revolve around a young magical hero protagonist with the duty to protect and keep secret the magical world in their city. Both protagonists inherit magical powers that skipped their parents generation. Both have talking dog who provides magical exposition and younger sibling of the opposite gender who are sometimes jealous of them. They each have a grandparent of the same gender who is also their magical mentor. And maybe the most random is the neon stripe of color in each of their hair. Juniper's was magic related but I think Jake just decided to dip his hair in green Kool-Aid for no reason...

Kudos to you for not addressing the many coincidences and similarities this show has with American Dragon. Usually when I find videos of this show. It’s usually about how these shows have a lot in common. Even I can’t help but notice it. So I’m glad you managed to focus solely on this show in the video. You’ve gained a subscriber

I read on the fan wiki that the show had initially received the green-light for seasons 4 and 5, which would each consist of 20 episodes, making the total episode count 80. Jodie finding out about June's powers was a big part of it, and there would be an overarching villain. There wasn't anything about why these plans fell through. It's a shame, because it seems to me that the creatives behind it, didn't have a plan for the show until they were that far into production, the show would have changed a lot if it continued like it was supposed to.

I still remember this show, it definitely made an impression on me, but at the time it was airing I couldn't watch it consistently. You are definitely right in that Cartoon Network seemed to juggle around the airing time of the show, and others, without really informing the viewer base it was happening. The series aired during a time where shows would often live or die based on how regularly and consistently they could be watched on broadcast television, and juggling around airing times during the day was something Cartoon Network was very much guilty of during that time, I think they were trying to find the optimal viewing time for different shows but didn't really bother to let the viewers know when airing times were changing so their target demographic could watch the show.
With the rise of streaming platforms, airing times really aren't an issue since you can just watch whatever show is on the platform you're using on your schedule, so it really doesn't matter if the show came out at midnight or noon. Broadcast television is still a thing, but it seems to be on the decline and established networks that made their business with broadcast television are still struggling to reformat their structure to work with streaming and keep their general level of quality from the prior era.

You're right about the weird time slots, though, I never really knew when it would be on and missed a lot of episodes back when it aired.

I have fond of memories of this show. I remember when the show first aired, my local CN aired it at a time I couldn’t watch it, but around December when the channel would have mini-marathons of all of its shows, Juniper Lee aired at a time I could watch it.

personally, I very much like the cartoons from the late '90s to the 2000s as to what convoluted mess they are today.
Thanks for covering this video, Markis. Glad to see the show was not completely lost to time and money.
Juniper Lee was one of the nicer cartoon series for me that had a nice ending that is not abrupt or feels incomplete. Sure there is room left for this cartoon to pick back up but I would not like to see a reboot of this gem if the reboot would end up the same way others got messed up like PowerPuff girls, Looney Tunes and Wacky races (I was surprised when I heard about the new episodes and was shocked to see how the characters were appropriated to today's trends but did badly). With this show especially depending on pop culture, I do not want to see Ray Ray dapping, Juniper or Joey twerking, or ANY character (magical creatures included) do any Fortnight dance.
I get items are changing and the 90s kids are all grown up, I finally get what the older generation was upset about when they reminisce about the 'good ole days' and how the present is messed up.. Technically the present will always feel worse than the good times in the past.

I have to agree. It was really tough creating a cartoon in that era, the competition was perhaps the most fierce there ever was. If Juniper lee came out today, it would be on another level of quality.
Funny enough it *was* a show I forgot but remembered recently. Now that I look at the art style especially the monsters I feel like it rubbed off some of it's artstyle to mine too.

I used to love this, it popped in my head this week but it wasn't until a few hours ago that the name just jumped out to me and I searched it. I can barely remember much of it, the most memorable episode for me was where people found out she had powers and it had to be undone, but I know I used to love it when it aired.
Edit: I've actually watched every cartoon mentioned in here except that adult one and teen titans. I watched something that might have had a similar name to that, but it wasn't a DC cartoon, it was kids of the Greek gods or something like that (called titans in the show.)

I'll never ever forget this show. I was raised in Mexico City sometimes visiting or traveling with my dad to San Diego, the airing of Cartoons at that time would take years or months (took like a year for Mexico to get the CN-city style comercials between shows) to premiere and saw the regulars: Ed Edd and Eddy, dexter lab, the powerpuff girls, knd, fosters etc, ONE show that I was fascinated by cuz I had never seen before in Mexico was Juniper Lee, idk if CN at the time was having a mini-marathon because I remember watching like 8 episodes in one sitting and was very disappointed that it wasn't on CN in Mexico when I go back.

Thanks for this great review! It's always nice seeing people mention or review this show in a positive way. They actually aired the last few episodes of season 3 online, so it's possible you might have just not seen them. Anyone outside of the US might have seen them earlier on TV but the s3 episodes were only aired maybe once or twice, so yes, the network did sorta phase out the show for unknown reasons :''D Which is so weird! Considering that they really supported it strongly at the start of production (which must have been around 2003/2004 or so), it's odd what kind of a reception the show received. Compared to ADJL and other "teen or tween hero" shows, it stood out to me for it's unique parts and how it tried to approach the concept in creative ways (and also avoid some tropes about chinese culture in american shows). The more episodic nature of the show was also more relaxing with how many plot-cartoons and shows were on at the time. It felt strangely ahead of the times from some writing aspects and seeing these HD shots in this review, the art looks soooo good, I wish I could get proper DVDs or something that would play here in my own zone as well lol.
I honestly wish CN had greenlit even season 4, instead of canning the show, but I guess maybe we'll hear what those unused scripts were going to be like one day, if any of the show's writers ever feel like sharing 'em.

I don't remember many moments from this show but I remember enjoying it and thinking it was neat. However, one thing that has always stuck with me is the moment where she realizes she can't leave the town. Like others have said, it was just such a memorable and impactful moment. Something about that has always stuck with me and was sort of unexpected in something that so light hearted and didn't really have many heavy overarching narratives.
