- Bernard Cribbins, OBE (born 29 December 1928) is an English character actor, voice-over artist and musical comedian with a career spanning over seventy years. He came to prominence in films of the 1960s, and has been in work consistently since his professional debut in the mid-1950s.
Cribbins is particularly well known to British audiences as the narrator in The Wombles, a BBC children's television programme that ran for 40 episodes between 1973 and 1975, and for his roles as the pretentious guest Mr. Hutchinson in the "The Hotel Inspectors" episode of Fawlty Towers (1975) and the belligerent barman in Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972). He also recorded several successful novelty records in the early 1960s and was a regular and prolific performer on the BBC's Jackanory from 1966 to 1991. Having appeared as Tom Campbell, a companion to Dr. Who in a 1966 feature film, Cribbins is also known for his role, four decades later, as Wilfred Mott, a companion to television's Tenth Doctor.
Seems fitting to listen to this one. RIP Bernard. True legend.

So very very true rip bernard
I've just found the single in my collection!
We had men who wasn't wordy but could dig a big ole.
They wasn't valued. Digging their oles.
"Hard work doesn't make you better off slugger" my dad said. "Just better off dead"
He was the fella in the road , down an ole with a spade.😂
RIP Bernard Cribbins who has died today at the age of 93. He will be remembered for his funny songs, narrating the wombles, Jackanory, Old Jack's Boat, Doctor Who and much much more. Forever a British Legend may he rest in peace.
RIP Bernard and thanks a thousand times for all the fun and laughter watching your performances and hearing those songs gave us through the years.
What a "Super British" voice.
His narration was top quality.

We will miss you good sir. ❤️😭
Rip Bernard x. Died 28 July 2022 aged 93. You were an all-round entertainer and the sort of person anyone would want as a neighbour
As a Grandparent!, hell i'd even welcome him as a hotel inspector if only I could have met him.
RIP Bernard. I never met you but I have known you all my life.
Me and the lad were singing this together today. Whilst digging a hole. Big and sort or round it was. I learned it whilst digging a big and sort of round hole with my Dad. Simple pleasures in hard times.
What was this hole for?
To bury toffee nosed city banker blokes in bowler hats. What else?
@@Wilkins_Micawber Can we bury the ones that caused the 2008 financial crash in one?
Maybe it shouldn't have been there.
@@dollcefina burying numpties.
I hope they play this at his funeral❤️
Should be SIR Bernard Cribbins. Wonderful entertainer, Lovely person all round.
Yes he certainly deserved it.
Even comedy records were beautifully produced and arranged back then!
The producer was a certain George Martin..I wonder what ever happened to him? 😂
What an absolute legend this man was. So sad to learn of his passing today: 28 July 2022. Rest easy and in peace Bernard Cribbins.
Thank you Mr Cribbens for being a part of my childhood. I used to love him narrating Jackanory.

Bernard Cribbins ended up in my team.
What an absolute Legend, such a top bloke who did lots for charity.RIP mate.
As a construction worker who has dug many a hole whether needed or not, I can confirm that yes there is always someone to tell you how to tell how to do it!
Hold it right there!
You're going all wrong.
You don't want to be doing it that way,
No,
You want to do be doing it this way...
I insist.
Watching my daughters dog digging a hole reminded me of this ❤
Goodnight Sir. A truly beloved man and English national treasure.

Lovely song, takes a dark turn at the end there though! RIP Bernard Cribbins.
Bernard Crinbbins was and will always be one of my favourite British comedy actors ( and singers ) He seemed like a genuinely nice person , I am so sorry to hear he passed away ,I also thought the man could go on forever. Loved him in " Carry On Spying " ,one of my favourite Carry On movies ,also Carry On Jack ,but my favourite movie with him was "Two Way Stretch" , With Peter Sellers , Wilfrid Hyde White and the great Irene Handl played his mum . Great movie. And he was unforgettable as the " Spoon Salesmans " , mistaken for a hotel inspector , in that great episode of Fawlty Towers. Gone but not forgotten , the man had class and talent galore . And yes, he should have been Knighted .
I couldn’t agree more Two way stretch was one of my favourites too! He was/is a legend!
Sssthpoooons - how interesting
Short and sweet! Brilliant song remember it well! Shows my age. R.I. P. Bernard.x
R.I.P Bernard, thank you for entertaining us
Brilliant; only rivalled by Right said Fred.
RIP Bernard Cribbins and thanks for a lifetime's entertainment from Jackanory and the Wombles to Dr Who.
Gonna miss ya. Thankfully you are immortalised on film and recordings. An institution that will be missed. Give those darleks hell.
R.I.P. to a true legend, will be sadly missed.
R.I.P Bernard, you'll be sorely missed. x
Love this guy. Just listening to some of his stuff and having a good laugh. Don’t get great entertainers like him today. Thanks Bernard for bringing back so many memories.
Suggest if you haven't seen it, the 'Hotel Inspectors' Fawlty Towers episode had Bernard playing an awkward customer. Absolutely brilliant performance.
RIP.
Farewell, Mr Cribbins. Thank you for all the stories you told me on Jackanory, the songs you sang, the films and dramas you appeared in. You've been a part of my life for most of my life, rest in peace now, you most certainly deserve to. My condolences to your family and loved ones.
RIP Bernard Cribbins....... you are A LEGEND!!!!
Had to have a listen. Dear old Bernard, gone but not forgotten.
R.I.P Bernard, a true national treasure.
Thanks for it all, it was more than we deserved. Reunited with Gillian, bet she said “About time, too. What took you so long!? “ RIP
The earliest memory I have of Bernard Cribbins was in the late 1960's when he had his own series Cribbins made by Thames TV. He was in a sketch where he was standing behind a lectern giving a monologue in public and being pelted with fruit and veg by the crowd. I couldn't stop laughing. Does anyone else remember that series?
I think Bernard Cribbins was one of the very few actors who Peter Sellers got on with and didn't fall out with him.
I am enjoying reading Bernard Cribbin's Biography really enjoying it. Thanks Bernard for more entertainment.
That's what brought me here, as well :)
Goodbye Burnard, thanks for all the childhood memories
I am so shocked. A real icon of my growing years has gone. Bernard Cribbens will forever live as a memory of great British comedy with the Wombles to the Railway children a classic icon of British entertainment 👏 👌 😀 xx
Thank you Mr. Cribbins. R.i.p. 😞
Bernard Cribbins sadly past today, and I just had to listen to his song again.
Remember listening to this as a kid on the radio and still love now
Died today. This song was so much part of my childhood
What a loss! Truly lovely man, wonderful actor, superb in some of the funniest British films ever made, and this disc was chosen by Noel Coward as the one he couldn't do without when he was on "Desert Island Discs".
RIP Bernard. If he is buried I hope they play this at the funeral.
Catchy, simple, hilarious. A classic. Heard this a while ago when I got my hands on a novelty skiffle collection, some real classics. Both of Mr Cribbins hits Right said Fred and Hole in the ground were on it, and they are now some of my favorites. Love this man, true entertainer. respect.
simply the best
Such a sad day. RIP Bernard Cribbins 💔
Still love this tune.
Thank you Sir for the laughs you gave us. R.I.P
RIP Bernard. Much loved by millions.
I'm reading Bernard Cribbins' autobiography, atm, and wanted a reminder of when he was a much younger entertainer. And he was very entertaining!
He'll always be the voice of Bilbo Baggins, to me, too.
Loved this when I was kid, in 1972 I went to work and travelled on the tube thousands on men with bowler hats umbrellas and brief cases, empty briefcases and cucumber sandwiches luncheon vouches and empty face's, from suburbia to heights never been to living the 1970 dream, the things I have seen
RIP Bernard an ever present all my life.
Thank You Bernard for being the Granddad i never had.
Rest Easy Bernard Cribbins another Star has appeared in the heavens... 🕊️

Rest in Peace Bernard.
RIP Mr Cribbins a very special sort of gentleman and entertainer one of a kind … 💎
Thankyou bernard lots of memories
I recently read, in a book about Desert Island Discs, that the one which Noel Coward would save from the waves if he could keep only one, was Hole in the Ground, Most of his other choices were opera etc. Make of that what you will!
spot on
RIP Sir Thank you fit the laughter
A sad day when Bernard passed. Now I’ve started to watch the tv angling show on Amazon prime called catching the monsters again , Bernard stars in it and narrates the whole show, such a soothing voice he has in it
So many childhood memories RIP
Chosen by Noel Coward as one of his 8 selections for BBC radio series 'Desert Island Discs' - a compliment from one great performer to another!
Classic lyrics, basically telling the bloke to piss off, without swearing 👍
A great, jazzy performance of an interestingly constructed song. Bernard had an exquisite vocal tone and perfect timing.
A Great man. A great life, A great example. We thank you Bernard.
Stumbled upon an old movie "Dale's Invasion Earth 2150 A D." And was pleasantly surprised to see Bernard Cribbins as one of the indistinguishable stars!
RIP Bernard. you will be sorely missed. 😢
Remember him in Fawlty Towers where he was mistaken as a hotel inspector. Absolute class, RIP.
" I'm not a violent man ,Mr Fawlty " ( after kneeing Basil in the Groin area 🤭🙄☺️) Basil replies " Oh yes you are ," in a falsetto sounding voice ! . I love Fools and Horses but Fawlty Towers is the greatest British sitcom of them all ,at least in my humble opinion. And Bernard Cribbins was so good , if that had been an American show he would surely have won an EMMY for best guest appearance in a TV episode. Wonderful actor , the great John Cleese himself has commented just the other day on twitter that they had some fabulous guest appearances on Fawlty Towers but Bernards was the most perfect of them all. True praise indeed for a man truly talented, and loved by so many of his fellow actors and fans alike. And by all accounts, a lovely lovely man. God Speed Bernard , do not rest in peace but "carry on" 🤭 doing what you have done all your wonderful career , entertaining , this time with a celestial audience . Nobody did it better .
Rest in peace Bernard a truly great man
Loved the guy. A true gentleman and wonderful performer. R I P Bernard. . Thanks for all the pleasure that you gave us.
Brilliant Song..Thank you Bernard Cribbins Rest In Peace the world's gonna miss you .
A classic tune of my childhood!
His narration to "A Passion for Angling" sticks in my head as perfect. a sad loss to us all.
Presumably the 6 dislikes are from blokes in bowlers.
Well we'll just 'ave to put 'em in the 'ole next time won't we? Can't please their sort you know...
Mike Buckland No they are from people who have two views of how the world should be run. Their way and the WRONG. One. 🙃
Or commie uni FREAKS!!!
Aahah brilliant 🤣
Just been having problems with building inspectors, my builders too young to know the record but found it here to show them. Very happy builders now. 😂😂😂
haha,nice one.
I love this song, alongside Right Said Fred
He will be missed
Fucking love it I'm pissed as fuck and this song keeps poping into my mind love it
RIP Bernard Cribbins :( What better way to remember his vast talent than to listen, fondly, to the most wholesome song about murdering an upper-class snob ever performed.
What a shocking thing to say, and a terrible misunderstanding of the song !
There is no mention of any murder, and I'm sure it is a harmless case of burying somebody alive ...........
Genius! Takes me back to childhood, granddad's parlour and the gramophone!
RIP. Legend
RIP Mr Bernard Cribbins lived 93 years 🙏
Hi Mandy! How’re you doing? Can’t believe he’s gone RIP to BERNARD
R.I.P. Bernard, another childhood legend gone...
You Sir, made your mark. You will never be forgotten.
A well loved voice in children lives of his ear-a .
From jackanory , railway children and carry ons.
Just took my daughter to watch the new railway children.
He will be Sadly missed. Like others of this time.
Jonny Morris, Kenneth Williams for example as children narrators of the time.
Maybe a make voices for all those children without a farther figure in there early years .
Brilliant RIP Bernard.
I always find myself coming back to this. Short, simple, and catchy. Love it!
He was just brilliant....and a true gent by all accounts...may he rest in peace.
RIP, Bernard.
Godspeed.
Thanks for the memories Bernard, lets have a cup of tea.
Loved him in Fawlty Towers too!
So sad to hear Bernard Cribbins has died at 93 years.
