    22:30 again, Kapodistrias wasn't against democracy. In fact he engineered the Canton system in Switzerland, which is hailed as the most democratic system on earth. The difference is that Greece was at the time very uneducated and not ready for direct democracy. Whenever the generals tried to run Greece democratically, infighting always broke out. So Kapodistrias said that they should first try to win the war, then try to build a democratic system

    11:00 Rumeli is actually a catch-all term for Balkan lands of the Ottoman Empire. Rum means "roman" and "eli" means "land" in archaic turkish, so it literally means "land of the romans". However it was also a vilayet in the last last few centuries of the Ottomans. Also Kocabaş literally means "big head" in turkish. So the aristocrats are called big heads. I also believe klepth means thief in greek. You can't make these faction names up.

    13:50, well no, the Greeks DID know of the ancient Greeks, which is why many revolutionaries, along with Kolokotrones, had an ancient greek hoplite looking like helmet, and there are many paintings depicting them with ancient Greek characteristics, Kolokotronis used to tell to his soldiers about the labors of the ancient Greeks to make them invincible in battle, he along with many other revolutionaries said to have used ancient Greek tactics in battle which were actually effective.

    • @peppino6976
      @peppino6976 Год назад +6

      You're actually wrong, the average greek probably didn't know about the heroes and figures of ancient greece. The chieftains such as Kolokotrones, used these figures to seduce the europeans on entering the conflict. The term 'Hellene' and 'Graikos' (greek) was being popularized by a greek intellectual named Adamantious Korais, living in Paris, in an effort of creating a sense of nationalism that relate to the ancients and to wean the average greeks off the institution of the Orthodox Church and their identity as "Romiois", related to the Byzantine Empire. It would take time during the revolution for the greeks to actually incorporate the term hellene and their identity with the ancient pagan past in spite of their medieval roman background. The video is actually correct and does a rather good job of presenting the subject, even though it's in an oversimplified manner!

      My family's name has also Turkish roots. (Katsos) is also a Hellenic family name derived, during the period of the Ottoman Occupation of Greece and prior to the Greek Revolution, from the Turkish word Kacak meaning a "fugitive, to flee,ect." or Klepht(mountain guerrilla)in the Greek. The Katsos Clan or family was found in the mountains of Morea,Epiros and Thessally. The Turkish verb stem Kac is in front of similar words having the same meaning(ie: to flee,runaway, deserter,smuggled contraband,escape,illegal,ect.)--Doxapatris 14:51, 20 July 2009 (UTC). I've heard that there was a point where the Ottomans changed tactics and starting recruiting non-muslim soldiers, and whoever did not accept, they gave him the description Kacak, from which many surnames arrose with this stem, although with different endings signifying their different locations in Greece.

      Yes and after a while , the nephews of Constantine Palaiologos , the last Emperor of Byzantium , became muslims , changed names and served Mehmed the conqueror. The despotate of Morea stood no chance against the ottomans and its nobility ended up serving the ottomans. As for Trabizond , the Komnini princess was taken by Mehmed as his wife (One of the many he had). After the fall of Constantinople , everything was pointless. Even the nobles and the crown heirs accepted the fact that there will be no crown of the Eastern Roman Empire after 1453 and most of them converted to islam . It would be no surprise to me if the last beys/nobles of the ottomans in the early 1920's (and their descendants today) were originally the Byzantine Greek Nobility.

    As a Greek, I have seen numerous videos about the Greek independence, but none described it as good as this one. The truth is, Greece as a concept is very complicated and has changed over the years. The Greek revolution started more like a Balkan union, united by the greek culture (just like the byzantine empire), and later became a "Greek" revolution. Then we had the Megali Idea, which was successful at first but stopped after the Greco-Turkish war that ended in 1922. So, Greece today is very different than what the Filiki Etairia hoped to achieve.

    Great video small correction at 12:55 you point Spetses to be in South Attica while it is located in the first leg of Peloponnese. The shape of the island is correct, only the location is wrong. As for Hydra you mistake it with the island of Makronisos, Hydra is also supposed to be near to Spetses in the easter Peloponnese, not in Attica. The correct location for both would be on peninsula to the west. Don't worry, it's a complicated geographical location so a lot of people do similar mistakes.

    He was murdered by the big countries of the time to establish their own pawns in the Greek government because Kapodistrias was going to make Greece a great place as he did for Russia and Switzerland and other places.

    For nearly 400 years after 1453, when the Ottoman Turks invaded Constantinople, finishing off the Byzantine Empire, Greece was among the countries that suffered under their regime. Ottoman repressions finally led to the Greek War of Independence in 1821, resulting after nine years in a hard won and well deserved victory. Constantinople (that is the city's true, original greek name) was greek long before it fell into the hands of the Ottomans, as well as all the parts there. Hagia Sophia ( Αγια Σοφια) which means "Holy Wisdom" in greek, was originally a Christian church, in a christian land, later turned into a mosque by the Ottomans, then into a museum, and, today, into a mosque again, by the Turks. All of that used to be greek, and they should become greek again.

In 330 CE, the HALF GREEK - HALF ROMAN emperor Constantine ( Greek name ) the Great, whose father was Flavius Constantius, a Roman army officer, and his mother was Helena, a GREEK woman who was later canonised as a saint, by the Greek ORTHODOX Church, made Constantinople his imperial capital, renaming it first as New Rome, and, finally, as Constantinoupolis, after himself. As for Hagia Sophia, it was built by Justinian, who was an Eastern Roman emperor, alright, but he had been made a Byzantine emperor by the time he built it, and Byzantium WAS A GREEK EMPIRE at the time. Not to mention that Hagia Sophia ( that is still considered the epitome of Byzantine, that is, GREEK, architecture, to this very day ), was designed by the GREEK geometers Isidore of Miletus, and Anthemius of Tralles. we took loans to buy ships that later we burned as a revolt against eachother. Then we took another loan to repay the first loans! Yeah without Russia, England and France the slavo-albanian-turko greeks leaving in Peloponhsos wouldnt in 10000 years kick ottoman ass

    In historical terms of time, 379 years is just a drop in the bucket. In one way or another Greece, despite the enormous opposition and difficulties, still exist.. The question is why the Ottoman empire still exists in Anatolia ????

    Countries did not exist until the past few centuries. Humans had empires, kingdoms, municipalities, tribes. Modern day civic societies have been developing since the past five centuries. Countries with borders and citizenships are a relatively new concept.

    GREECE IS IMMORTAL, ITS IN YOUR LANGUAGE (BTW not only for the so-called Turks, but whatever language you speak in any country), it's in your customs and traditions, it's in your so-called cuisine (except for stake tartar), it's in the ground you walk on and all around you, it's in the churches you occupied, it's in your the name you are given, both as individuals and in your cities, and above all else it's in your DNA (and this part is the most painful speaking as a Greek). GREECE IS EVERYWHERE. Simple, true and historically documented. And SOCRATES AND PLATO ARE FEATURED IN THE NARTHEX OF THE CHURCHES / MONESTARIES ON MOUNT ATHOS. THE HELLENES (AKA GREEKS) NEVER FORGET WHO THEY ARE. NEVER. To deny this is wishful thinking on your part and that's putting it mildly... And even after all of that history and strife and subjugation, we're still HERE!
